  • The Citadelle Laferrière, commonly known as La Citadelle, is a large early 19th-century fortress located in Milot in Nord, Haiti. The Citadelle Laferrière was commissioned by Haitian revolutionary Henri Christophe, for whom it is also named Citadelle Henri Christophe, and built by tens of thousands of former slaves. It was the main fortification of the newly independent First Empire of Haiti's defensive strategy against a potential French incursion.

How remarkable that Kind Henry Christophe of Haiti was able to accomplish all of this within just 15 years after Haiti freed itself from slavery and colonization. I want to remind my Haitian brothers that more than 200 000 brave Haitian man and woman died sacrificing themselves in the war for independence so that we can have this land that we have today. Our ancestors fought against all odds ; the least we can do is honoring them and their wishes for a Haiti free and prosperous for Haitians.

I would not say that they are the best country in the Caribbean . In light of the fact they ARE the poorest country in the Caribbean and they HAVE ALLOWED GANGS FROM WITHIN THEIR COUNTRY TO TAKE OVER KILL THEIR CITIZENS!
They need to fight back and reclaim their country.
For DECADES Haiti has been known for HUNGER, POVERTY AND VIOLENCE!
      Poppa Doc, then baby Doc!
These dictators were installed with the help of the American govt.
And sadly, the Haitian people never seem to quite know how to overcome evil violent Greedy rulers!
Since I was a child in the late 60’s I have SEEN AND KNOWN HAITIANS THAT ESCAPED AND CAME TO AMERICA!
They have had limbs chopped off by soldiers of this evil regime , it is a dictatorship!
The PEOPLE have to decide once and for all do they live under DEADLY INHUMANE CONDITIONS ?
      OR
DO THEY GET TOGETHER AND FIGHT FIRST THEIR FREEDOM AND REGAIN THEIR COUNTRY ONCE AND FOR ALL.
      Don’t blame the media!
There is NOTHING NICE TO SEE IN HAITI!
Impoverished areas, FAMINE, BURNT OUT CITIES!

THANK YOU FOR BRINGING US THIS VERY IMPORTANT VLOG. For those who underestimate the diabolical greed of Europeans and the strength and resolve of Black people, this is a priceless lesson in HISTORY for which ALL Haitians should be proud. A lifetime of reading about Haiti (including "The Black Jacobins" by my countryman C.L.R. James) could not have prepared me for the images I see here today.
This structure is simply magnificent and were it not so formidable, I believe that France and her imperial co-conspirator the US, would have destroyed it a long time ago...because of what it represents.
It is crucial therefore, that Black American and Caribbean folks visit this very cultural and historically significant place BEFORE they go to Africa to visit slave castles and other sites of our subjugation. BIG THANK YOU to the very knowledgeable tour guide. He is a national treasure.

October 1779, a force of more than 500 Haitian free blacks joined American colonists and French troops in an unsuccessful push to drive the British from Savannah in coastal Georgia. More than 300 allied soldiers were gunned down charging British fortifications Oct. 9, making the siege the second-most lopsided British victory of the war after Bunker Hill. Though not well known in the U.S., Haiti's role in the American Revolution is a point of national pride for Haitians. After returning home from the war, Haitian veterans soon led their own rebellion that won Haiti's independence from France in 1804.

You are doing what Africa should have done centuries ago. Your work here is bigger than a show, you are showing Ayiti to the world and you are showing Ayiti to many Ayitians too. This is really priceless! Thank you 💕and thank you to your knowledgeable guide as well.

I’m starting to sound like a broken record but I’m so passionate about Haiti that I’m not really living when my country is not striving.
There were two countries in the Caribbean that were leading in tourism up to the late 70’s. Cuba as an American territory attracted American tourists and Haiti because of its historical significance. Starting from the first European settlement in the Americas, the resting place of the Santa Maria, the resistance of the native, all the way to 1804; every step you take in Haiti you’re walking on historical ground.
To those of you who are not Haitians, have you ever wondered why the western media is hellbent on portraying Haiti in a disparaging manner? Well, as the saying goes, you only throw rocks after ripe fruits.
The spirits of the Ancestors still live through some of us.
Haiti shall not perish with the help of the Almighty.
Thank you once again AT for the phenomenal work you’re doing and kudos to the guide. He was right on point. I was paying close attention 😀

It took Haitian slaves 12 years of hard fought battles against the French to set themselve free. The Vertieres battle was the bloodiest and the ultimate one. Had we lost , France would have reclaimed the colony, killed our ancestors and reintroduced slavery. We won, by the grace of God, and proclaimed our independence on Jan. 1st 1804. This was a big blow to the colonial order and to all Europeans who thought that black slaves were dumb sub humans. Now they knew that we could be better soldiers, better generals and defeat them on the battle field. Haiti became the black ship afterwards because the colonialists became fearfulof a domino effect. Thanks A.T! I visited Citadelle but did not have a guide. Huge mistake!

Throughout their history, endless leaders were killed, military coups, National Palace bombings, etc. One Founding Father of Haiti, was disemboweled in the street and fed to pigs. This was a Papa Doc documentary I saw, the history, BEFORE, Dr. Francis "Papa Doc" came to power. There is a extremely bloody past, since the revolution. Sad, even the king was forced to commit suicide, due to the population making fun of his disability, while growing old.

Am I the only one? It looks like right from a scene from a Chinese castle? I'm Haitian, and I heard of it, but to actually see in fine detail the lengths human beings are willing to take not to be enslaved is unbelievable. It's like you are on top of the world. I would get altitude sickness. I would take my chance fighting the French below. I get Daisy just watching it on video. The water reservoir was the most ingenious there is. The first environmentally friendly aqueduct. The most efficient use of rainwater. Back then, rainwater was safe, but the Earth's ecosystem used the technique to fill its rivers and lakes. WOW

Great tour and the person guiding you did an outstanding job. One thing he didn’t mention was, each rooms have windows facing outside to not only protect the areas but also, that if the top of the building is too cloudy, the guards who are stationed below the building on the lower floors will have a much better views of ppl trying to enter the citadel. Notice how good and clear the view became when you guys went down to the lower floors?? The enemy stood no chance! They could see them from the top of the building on a clear day and they could still see them from the lower floors on a cloudy day. Hope this helped you understand better
