  • 00:00 Haiti is the poorest country in the Caribbean. To travel across the country, people and their goods must use only dirt tracks.
02:55 Haiti, once known as the pearl of the Antilles.
    14:41 Employment for all ages.
18:40 An island of many religions and many dangers.
27:48 Salt workers, women with a frantic pace of work.
29:25 Haiti, with steep paths and corrupt politicians.
36:23 Miners still searching for gold nuggets.
44:55 When bad weather further complicates their journey.
Travelling the 80km that separates Gonaïves and Môle Saint Nicolas in the North-east takes up to ten hours. There is one bus which makes the journey, and it is far from a comfortable ride.
Directors : Alexandre Spalaikovitch and Guillaume Lhotellier

Indomitable spirit and overcoming problems ? We clearly didn't watch the same video and you are ignoring the clearly obvious truths and instead pretending . They DO NOT solve even the simplest of problems and sit there waiting for help while the buildings crumble on their heads , pipes rust away , roads dissintigrate , fields spoil and trees disappear . . They instead complain that nobody is helping them but when people try to help them they steal and turn insanely corrupt until the helpers simply cannot take it anymore and leave .
Westerners come in to plant them crops because they are starving -- the locals salt and destroy the crops once they sprout because they thought the devil was under the earth pushing up the stalks with a long stick . True story . They refuse to plant new trees because effort , or because they are incapable of thinking of the future . Look at a satellite image of Haiti and be amazed that you can see the border so clearly , since they have destroyed the ecology there so entirely and do zero maintenance , zero thinking ahead and have no respect .
Things will never get better if you are all either coddling them and doing everything for them , or pretending as you are that they are all well meaning , indomitable and overcoming problems with ease because by saying so you think you are helping make yourself appear virtuous . You want to help ? Be HONEST . Not mean , HONEST . Can we no longer even do that much ?

I've been to Haiti but only to the tourist area which is immaculate. It's hard to believe what the real Haiti is like, and the hard life the people have. I cringed seeing the bus and truck struggling over the rocky roads, and in the heat. The woman taking her gold to the trader made me wonder about his honesty; she was at his mercy, after so much back-breaking work. Here in north America we are so isolated from their lives, having little idea what they go through every day just to survive.
