This wonderful man will never know how much he changed my life. As a wish of my parents, I started studying Civil Engineering, but I hated it as I saw it as an destructive discipline and the idea of it was completely in conflict with my big love for Ecology.
Than I discovered this, and already make plans on making Civil engineering greener here in Austria.

I think those are good selling points but I believe that the life & Liberty that such a home can provide are amazing. That's the appeal to me at least.

More people than you think would be willing to convert their traditional homes to cob and grey water if they knew how. I certainly would, I'm not going to give up great farmland and an orchard to do it. I would put a cob wall right on top of the siding to hide it since it's hideous and put solar up, with green roof on the other buildings. This whole place could be an advertisement right in the middle of a neighborhood. Think about that.
Cathy Anderson why would you have to give up farm land? Earthships are completely off grid.. You can apply the grey water systems and rain catchment systems and convert to solar and etc.. And keep what you have... But, they're totally sustainable off grid.. And stay at 70-72 degrees year round without any heating or cooling systems.. If you're going to be building a new home, why not make it an earthship? XD
I have loved this idea for 40 years but seriously, "800 in 30 years?" That's only 26 or 27 a year. I hope we could do better. Also, the gardens in the front of the houses are a dynamic idea but how much can they produce for how long? Again, I would love nothing better than for this to be a panacea.
I was into building Earthships but one day while helping out I realised that I was never going to have the money to buy land so lost interest. Instead I built a tiny house truck that is mostly off grid apart from needing to get water and food but my resource requirements are now 1/4 of what they were with all my needs met and no more landlords, moving boxes or rent ever again.

what is the water system they use in those earth ships?
Earthships catch rainwater from roof into cisterns then use three times as potable water, grey water then black water.
The Chosen One they collect rainwater and filter it 4 times for potable, drinkable water, and 3 times as grey water.. Basically shower and hand washing water gets filtered and reused as toilet water. It also waters the plants in the green house. When you flush the toilet, that's black water.. And there's different options for what you can do with that, including traditional septic systems and even being on the grid. They have off grid options as well. They explain better on their website. Google it! Pretty cool stuff!

That is the downside in where most of them are located (Taos, NM), There is only rainfall about 25-30 days a year. Not a slam on Earthships, but a more temperate climate might work better. Great solar though!
This man is an absolute genius . If only the government would back up off all of us just think what we could accomplish with stupid government rules.... people at the top want slaves they own so they can money , money, and more money. It makes me sick.
i like the idea of the house being self sustainable, but i think for the average person to be interested i think a modern look would go far. As it stands all the earth ships have a "hippyish" vibe, witch doesn't interest most people.

I appreciate his tenacity and desire to be “eco friendly.” However, some of this is bullshit, which is why I cannot own one. How “eco friendly” and “naturally sustainable” is concrete, the potential to run out of water, rubber tires and bricks (as rubber naturally breaks down it dirt, releasing harmful gases), plastic cooling tubes, etc.? Let’s not forget the fact that many ppl complain of bug issues too. Everyone that I knew that purchased one greatly regretted their purchases, and had to take up to a 100k loss, in order to sell it.
No thanks!! I can build a nice, eco friendly home for half the cost elsewhere.
Would insect screens help with bugs? If you integrate a planting area with your living area it seems inevitable that there will be some insect issues.
I wouldn't use tyres either, you could use sandbags instead.

People can't keep snakes mice and insects out of traditional homes so what does it matter if they are in earthship homes, same battle no matter what kind of home you have, vermin want food and shelter too
Take care of his "a**" alright. Now he is charging for everything including an outrageous price for plans when you still might have to get engineer approved by your state.

dragonflyfla might. There's states where you don't have to do squat. That's on you... Also, his plans go on sale from time to time.. And he's got books that give step by step instructions. There is also a plethora of videos available on RUclips.
What are some of those states where you don't need engineer approval/it's less restrictive?
