      This deserves a serious discussion about bike safety during professional races.
      First we had the complete disregard for safety on behalf of the race organizers at the Tour des Pyrenees. Then we lost a promising young rider in a deadly descent in the Tour de Suisse. These incidents comes just a few weeks after a professional event moto driver died after having a head-on collision with an age group racer on the bike course at Ironman Hamburg. Three catastrophic or near catastrophic events and two casualties. Event organizers need to do some serious soul searching and the athletes, fans, and media need to be holding these groups accountable.

    Love the Tour of Switzerland. Let’s go back to 1987 when Andy Hampsten won with an upstart Team 7-Eleven, showing what it would take to accomplish his 1988 Giro where he powered through an unreal blizzard on the Gavia. Few knew that Hampsten grew up in Grand Forks, North Dakota, where winter snow and wind like this were the norm. Certainly the climbs were not, as it is utterly flat farm country! Hampsten remains an iconic American rider not only for his phenomenal climbing abilities, but for being a quiet, thoughtful professional off the bike as well. He is currently 61 and undoubtedly still in great shape! 🇺🇸

    This stage's finish should have been on top of the Abulapass, and NOT after a ridiculously dangerous descent with speeds up to 70 mph. But the overall trend in the modern world of "sports", especially in cycling, is this ever growing and insatiable lust for spectacle, totally neglecting the athletes' well being and even the very risk of death. There's a huge wake-up call involved in the umptiest passing away of a young contemporary gladiator for the sake of entertaining the audience (and satisfying this world's advertising business), and it is of course needless to mention that the overall societal disease, not to say utter insanity is not at all restricted to the world of sports in particular. In the French philosopher Guy Debord's words: “The spectacle is the nightmare of imprisoned modern society which ultimately expresses nothing more than its desire to sleep. The spectacle is the guardian of sleep.”
    R.I.P. Gino Mäder.

    • @Versalico91
      @Versalico91 Год назад +6

      I'm sorry but this post is nonsensical, to say the least. I'm assuming you're either new to the sport or at best a very casual fan, otherwise you would not be typing that. The same exact finish with Albulapass descent into La Punt has been used in many past Tour de Suisse editions. It is somewhat of a traditional stage. It had been used in 1995, 2010, 2013, 2017 to name some recent years.
      Back in 1995 helmets weren't even compulsory, and most riders didn't even want to wear it, there is another RUclips video with footage of that stage that will show it. In fact, helmets were only mandatory in road racing after another tragic loss, the one of Andrei Kivilev, back in 2003 Paris-Nice, despite some riders protest to make it compulsory in the aftermath of the event. I'm making this point just to call off your modern day gladiator narrative, which is uninformed and preposterous.
      Cycling is a dangerous sport that entails certain risks. Of course, race organizers need to minimize them, but from time to time we have seen tragic incidents like this and many times, like in Gino's case, organizations are not to blame. Sadly, every year there is a near fatal or fatal crash. Just in recent times, we tragically lost Wouter Weylandt, Antoine Demoitie, Bjorg Lambrecht and Gino Maeder due to crashes. There were other riders, like Stig Broeckx, Kris Boeckmans, Milan Vader, Fabio Jakobsen which experienced near-death crases but thankfully made it alive. I'm only taking into account crashes which came on top of my mind since 2011. There were also victims of cardiac arrests like Alessio Galletti (circa 2005), Michael Goolaerts, Daan Myngher, Remco Te Brake (all of those late 2010s, early 2020s). Cycling is, sadly, a high-risk sport.
      Descents are also part of the sport, just like high speed sprint finishes. Gino tragically lost his life on a descent he probably knew by heart, being this his country. He was not fighting for the stage or for the overall, thus your narrative is also frail at that point. By the way, cyclist reach high speeds in every single descent, whether it is 10K or 100K from the finish. Sprinters and stragglers are dropped and need to make it back to the pack. They take huge risks not captured by camera, because they are chasing. Again, your narrative is off.
      I'm just writing these lines to shed some light of your ill and uninformed post about society lust for spectacle applied to cycling. If anything, your post brings two modern day topics: anyone with little knowledge is free to throw in its opinion on social media and make a fuss about everything (particularly about things they don't know or understand). Secondly, it brings to the fore today's cancel culture about everything people disagree with.
      Thus I would suggest you to educate well yourself in the topic before posting and also would be glad if you would take your cheap and distasteful 20 cent philosophy away.
      Finally, R.I.P. Gino Maeder. It is indeed a tragic and sad loss.

    The young man is gone. This sport is dangerous and more safety should be added to protect athletes. Going down the hill 100kmh is crazy. Stop this.

    What's wrong with Remco? He looked good at the Giro, now he's struggling.

      Remco is still highly likely to take significant time on all current GC rivals in stage 8 TT. If Ayuso and Skjelmose have a good TT they might hang on, based on stage 1 TT Gall isn't going to factor.
