I love the idea of filming with a smartphone. The challenge of squeezing out every bit of performance and tinkering with all the different types of accessories. I actually wish I was creative enough to story tell because I enjoy it.
“If you truly love cinema with your full heart and
with enough passion, then you can’t help…
but make a good movie.”
- Quentin Tarantino
Sounds to me like you should go for it. ♥️
@@BBAACKE thank you for this!
@@anibitscream Truly hope to see something from you in the future on here or elsewhere. 🙏🏼
I love what Spielberg did here. I’m so tired of everyone doing the exact same edits with the same boring presets and luts. Everything on RUclips looks the same, and 99.9% of it sucks. This music video is smarter and more creative than any video posted by Peter McKinnon, Matti Haapoja and all the rest. Thank you Spielberg, RUclips needed this.
That is not Speilberg in the photo.
Everytime i hear people say "a pro DP or Director can create a master piece with even an iphone" well guess what, the greatest director on earth got given an iphone and he MESSED UP big time 🤣😂🤣.
If you like, keep on convincing yourself that all those mistakes were all intentional.
I like how dad Steven Spielberg make the Phone I phone.
This video clip was made for social media and youtube unlike MTV music videos. We have to understand this. Also, Steven Spielberg is not interested in digital/mobile filmmaking. His 1968 short film Amblin' without dialogue for 20 minutes still fascinates me. He should not forget that he signed a contract with Universal Pictures at the age of 22.
I noticed the crew shadow but, not being in the industry, I thought it looked good and only found out it was bad when it was pointed out.
I saw in the behind the scenes of west side story, Spielberg used his iPhone to block the dance choreography . Maybe he used his own phone.
Yeah very possibly.
I think the end piece has zoom to avoid getting his own shadow on artist, shooting lower angle also could be for the same reason.
If you look at the side BTS “dolly” shot you will notice there are two HMIs spaced out equally pushing right through the windows👍
Gopro: hold my beer
I swear just about 12 days ago I was thinking about Steven Spielberg making a small film on a phone
I have an FX6 but it’s really impressive what you can film with an iPhone 👍🏻 📱
So I have a question about iPhone film making. I am a starting out short movie maker. When you make your movies and your filling up your memory on your iPhone, do you upload your clips as your finished shooting each one or wait till all your footage is shot, and do you upload to cloud or transfer to a hard drive or thumb drive or what would you recommend if your clips are getting large sizes? I hope that makes sense.
I transfer the files at the end of the shoot day. Typically speaking I just use AirDrop to a computer. If that’s where you’re going to edit that’s the easiest way I found. Although you can definitely connect an SSD drive to your phone with an adapter cable. You could also just use a lightning cable to your computer as well. There are actually lots of ways including using a cloud service like frame.io with Filmic Pro.
Great video❤
Thanks!
I remember in the mid 90's I bought a semi pro camera for approx 3.5k. I'd say pretty much every phone you can buy now has better quality than that camera. So shooting a project on a phone, I can't really see a problem with that at all.
Good points.
“There’s shadows in life, baby” - Jack Horner
Yeah Another motivation to shoot
So I can afford Spielberg for a project?
I’ve heard he has a very competitive day rate. :)
The irony of Spielberg’s music video is that to approach conventional film making the phone becomes less of a phone and more of a camera. How would this production differ if it was shot on a camcorder?
On most of the more involved shoots I do with a phone I treat it the exact same as I would if I was shooting on a RED camera or whatever camera. No difference at all. However, I find some people really go minimalist when they shoot with phones. So I guess it would depend on the production and of course the budget.
@@iphoneographers thanks for your reply sir. I don’t think there was mention of sound in the Spielberg shot video? That of course adds a whole new set of issues. Cheers.
I don’t think most people wouldn’t have noticed the shadows, most watching this as viewer not a critic, could care less about what the presenter has mentioned.
In your opening you said you were going to critique Spielberg's camera skills...Oh, go gently into the night my son.
I watched a film way back in the 1980s called Bad Taste, it was a almost comical gore / horror genre indie film, directed and created by no other than Peter Jackson of Lord of the Rings fame!
Obviously before he became so well known, it was filmed in New Zealand and featured a cast of I guess his friends and acquaintances, I believe it was filmed on a basic 16mm clockwork cine film camera but it looked incredible on the big screen, I saw it at a cinema, the effects although low budget, were actually quite good and very effective, just shows what can be done on a low budget.
There is a scene, where a house transforms into a space ship, literally the garden all folds away complete with white picket fence and it takes off with rockets blasts and smoke, the works!!
Watching the film you quickly noticed how 'fast' the scene changes take place, the reason for this was the camera Peter used was only capable of filming 30 seconds of footage before it ran out of film.
I think it was filmed over several.years because some of the cast age noticeable, change hair style/ length etc and even one cast member unfortunately passed away, so their end scenes had to be filmed with a replacement filmed from behind etc because they looked nothing like the original actor!
It's worth a watch if you want to see what is capable with a very low budget!
Imagine if Peter had access to all the filming technology back then, that we have all got so used to using everyday now and take for granted?.....⚠️😲🤔😁
Interesting and thanks for sharing
@@mudburon3381 You're welcome. The film is definitely worth a watch, it was so low budget, not only did Peter, film it, direct and produce it, he also starred in it!
But it was so well done.
He used Filmic pro
Great 👍
i do have an answer for the weird looking zooms.... theres a program called doubletake for filmic pro.... ( still angry that is not out for android yet ) but this program exist that allows you to film with all your cameras at the same time.
I’m familiar with DoubleTake but that’s not what they used here because when it shoots with both cameras the shots don’t aline. Also, it’s currently only in HD. And this video was produced in 4K. But that app is cool to play with for certain kind of stuff especially shooting two things simultaneously.
He’s great. I would be curious as to know why he did it. I assume as you said a friend. Vince Gilligan got Carol Burnett in the Better Call Saul final season after becoming friends through their limo driver who drove both of them. 🤷♂️
Ha, that’s a cool story about Carol Burnett. Hadn’t heard that. I kind of wondered why she was in that she was great though.
@@iphoneographers The producer told the story on one of the after show things they did on AMC. I feel like the Spielberg thing had to be something like that considering his wife was working with him.
Just a couple of weeks before the Apple event 🤔.
The jerkiness coming into the artist is the camera shift when zooming in on an IPhone 12 or 13. (Meaning when zooming the cameras switch from one to the zoom camera).
We are entering a beautiful age. Just another example of the gatekeeping aspect of filmmaking being dismissed. Everything is opening up and more voices will be able to join the cinematic discussion. It's going to be an exciting and wonderful era.
Agreed. We’re in it for sure.
Saying they are filming with an iPhone it's a myth, lighting, the gear to setup lights, costumes, catering, production design, add to that software and hardware for the editing, those things still eat up all of the money, camera in the end is the least of the tools you should be worrying about.
That photo is nothing more than a promotional shot for Apple, so people think they can do the same.
Maybe with moment lens it would be better))
After watching the music video what kills me is this quality would be ripped apart if it was shot on Canon or Sony camera. If its doesn't meet a certain standard then it should not matter what it was shot on.
Yeah I always say treat your production like you would regardless of the camera. Not that you can’t go more minimalist, but still want to have good production quality.
Do you think there's a chance that the photo of Spielberg holding the phone was just one of the takes 'he tried' or directed the camera operator with and the video itself was filmed by someone else? Personally, nothing about the video 'looks' like a Spielberg style to me.
I had that thought as well originally, but based on everything I’ve found so far pretty sure he shot it.
I would love to see a behind the scenes I wonder if he used a filter or nd or even a gimbal that’s the energy I need 😮
I found no behind the scenes of this, although according to Marcus Mumford he credits someone with shooting some… But I haven’t been able to find them anywhere. So it’s hard to say! However based on the one still photo we do have I would say he did not use a gimbal.
@@iphoneographers that’s so interesting 🤩 I wanted to buy the om4se for my birthday but I guess I don’t really need it 😅🥰
Filmed my first music video on an iPhone 4s
I shot a lot with that phone as well!
Dang
Spielberg was holding a Samsung 👀
Could be!
I'm scripting my first music video. After making content for a number of clients and friends over the years but avoiding it for me, it is time. The funny part is we had decided we would use B&W - the song has a gritty street feel, so it works. But, also, as you mention, color-correction and other elements are just easier to deal with in B&W.
We are going to shoot elements on our two Canon camera's but also get secondary footage using Filmic Pro on a Galaxy S20. Should be fun.
I noticed the little shift/jiggle thing as he rolled into Marcus on the drop and thought, "Hell, I can make that mistake and more..." In any case, thanks for the video. It is encouraging.
Very cool, yeah definitely get out there and make one for yourself. :) Best of luck!
Could it be a leak from the upcoming Apple iPhone 14 event? There’s been a professionally produced film featured in the last two events?
I guess it’s possible, but typically they’re more involved and not as DIY as this. But we’ll find out in a few weeks…
Regarding side window lights - when you see the picture of Spielberg on the chair there in the background are the windows an they are pretty bright on the right and not so much on the left ! actually looks like 2 brightest spots in 2 different places.
You can get mutch better performance from cheap cameras that cost 1/4 of a smartphone
Phone does Lucy more than take photos and videos 😉
Spielberg obviously just wanted this Mumford guy's song to get more reach (I never heard of him before, maybe he's already famous in the US. btw, I'm in Germany). Spielberg could have "shot" it on Hi8 or whatever, the whole point and appeal of the video is, that it was HIM having done it...would anyone care if it was shot by, let's say, Kate Capshaw, his wife?
Marcus Mumford is now going solo, but his band Mumford & Sons from the UK were hugely successful around the globe. But yeah, having Spielberg involved definitely doesn’t hurt. :)
Nothing wrong with using iPhone, better than shooting 8mm if you're not going for a purely artistic approach.
Cole Bennett solos
I think Apple reach out to him and ask him to do a Music video with the new iPhone 14… lol
It is close to the new event… 😃
maybe its just marketing for apple. Spielberg work with apple I think
Thought crossed my mind too, but if so they haven’t marketed it at all… No iPhone promotion yet.
@@iphoneographers maybe for the new iPhone .
2nd….by 2 minutes.
Perhaps he watched this channel for technical guidance?
You never know!
Umm.... this is news, why? FYI... technology doesn't make you a good storyteller.... hasn't everyone figured that out yet?
You’re right about storytelling, but it’s still news having the most famous director on the planet shoot something with a… phone.
damn this looks so bad !!!!
Looks like when camera comes back to Marcus it zooms to tele from wide - curtains are coming closer and this jerkiness is what you usually got on tele lens when moving around
Yeah that’s possible.
