    How cool was it to see Casey Neistat championing smartphone filmmaking? Fit the topic perfectly, too. That and of course Steven Soderbergh using an iPhone to make his feature film "Unsane"... and these guys can afford whatever gear they want. Don't wait to create!

      Question about filming on a cellphone, how do you deal with super small sensor sizes, and deep DOF? I'm sure its much harder to get a good DOF and have good lens control with a cellphone

    • @nwe2009
      @nwe2009 6 лет назад

      Also can smartphones have ND or UV filters?? Would help with the blown out sky on some of your vids

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  6 лет назад

      To get some shallow DOF you can use the Tele lens, 3rd party Tele lenses, ND filters or Beastgrip even makes a DOF adapter to attach traditional photo/video lenses. You can also get the subject closer to the lens to get some nice bokeh.
      We’re spoiled today with all the larger sensor cameras. Wasn’t too long ago that most cameras we all used were 1/3” CCDs, unless you were shooting film. So long story short, you can get shallow DOF looks, but on wider shots and most non telephoto shots everything will typically be in focus.

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  6 лет назад

      Definitely. Adding an ND filter is one of the number one things we recommend! We have several videos on our channel on using ND filters. Here’s a review we just did ruclips.net/video/TY69zFw5ORA/видео.html. And there’s more so just search our channel if you’re interested. Thanks for watching!

    I watched this video almost about a year ago and it really changed my attitude. I always felt that I should only make a film if it's perfect. Since then I have made a bunch of random films and have really gotten good practice from that and now I am getting paid to make videos for people. Soon I will be making my next attempt at a narrative short film, I hope it will turn out great.

    The best, or first RUclips video in years, perhaps both, that not only did I watch all the way through without growing disinterest, but that was truly and actually educational, detailed, and extremely helpful. I had all my questions answered without needing to dig and search further on RUclips or the internet. That NEVER happens. • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  4 года назад +2

      It’s all about video noise. In lower light with a smaller sensor you get more noise - And shooting log will increase the noise.

    I love the tips on using the flat colour profile in Filmic Pro! I've managed to make some films on my own with that feature and really see how it gives the footage more dynamic range. However, I think you could also consider sharing how to focus pull using Filmic Pro. I think that's one of the coolest features of the app, being able to manually adjust focus. Cheers!

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  4 года назад

      Yes focus pulling is pretty cool too! We have other videos on our channel looking at that as well. :) Thanks for watching!

  • @EliahHoliday
    @EliahHoliday 6 лет назад

    I don't have the FiLMic Pro app yet but I am wondering if you can focus pull by setting focal point, locking and then unlocking, set new focal point and then lock again. It would be clumsy compared to a focus ring on a camera but I am wondering if it can be done. I think the DJI Osmo Mobile you can manually adjust focus with a button, that might help.

    So after playing around with this app I'm impressed. Almost perfect except for a couple of thing. My phone is capable of shooting at 1080p @60 fps with its stock camera. When I select 1080p in Filmic it doesn't allow me to select 60fps. Also when I shoot a 4k video and export it to the stock media player on my phone it just won't play it.

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  5 лет назад

      Every phone is a bit different and a lot depends on the device. On iPhone you get 4K 60fps and in 1080 you can do 240fps. Not sure why the 4K wouldn’t play unless your phone doesn’t support that resolution - or it could be the higher bit rate or MPEG encoding.

  • @quintleslierandle5637
    @quintleslierandle5637 4 года назад

    So you say to set your shutter speed at 48 so it's double the shutter speed. But when you set filmic pro or 120 FPS capture (as you suggest with 24 FPS playback) then it won't allow the shutter speed to go any lower than 120 FPS. I tried this with 60 FPS capture and 24 FPS playback.

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  4 года назад

      Yeah you would want to double your frame rate to equal the shutter if possible for ideal motion blur. If you’re in lower light though it may not do it because shooting slow motion/higher frame rate takes more light.

    Great video thank you very much. As a novice I will be pleased if I can shoot 1 film in 20 days, but only doing it for my own enjoyment. Can I ask one thing about Filmicpro. Can you use it to take still photos as well as video? I currently use Osmo mobile 2 gimbal, which I like with DJI app for video and open camera for stills. Open camera is much better than DJI app, in my opinion, but is not integrated with Osmo mobile 2 while Filmic Pro is.

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  5 лет назад

      FiLMiC Pro is a video camera app only. You cannot do stills unless you take a still from a 4K image. Moment Pro Camera app you can do both. But FP is all about video and it’s a very feature rich app.

    Awesome video! I have a quick question for you. I noticed you have a 4 TB hard drive screenshot on one of the videos. Currently, I am backing all of my files up to Google drive as I have unlimited storage. Do you foresee any issues with editing off of these drives? My concern is that they are stored on the cloud and that it may somehow slow things down during editing. However, I cannot find much online about whether this is an issue or not. I am using proxy because I am shooting on iPhone and editing on premiere on a PC.

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  5 лет назад +1

      To our knowledge you can’t truly edit yet from cloud storage like that. But perhaps it’s possible with a fiber connection, but only with low bit rate proxy files would be our guess. We use several fast RAID setups and also some SSDs and it’s not fast enough typically to edit 4K smoothly or without lowering the playback resolution.

    • @johncharles5980
      @johncharles5980 5 лет назад

    Question... if I want to shoot video from the dash or windshield of my convertible... what's the best way to get smooth (not shaky) shots?

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  6 лет назад +1

      Probably with a gimbal is best. You could simple hold it - well, not if you’re driving - but someone hold it. :) Or rig it somehow. You could also try a suction cup mount on the dashboard or mini tripod, but the newer phone have OIS (optical image stabilization) that causes issues with bumps, so it’ doesn’t work very well. iPhone 6s or before is okay though. Not sure on Android. Another tip would be to shoot slomo as it will help smooth things out. Even slight slomo like 30p for 24p playback makes a difference. Hope that helps.

    • @PhillipSwindall
      @PhillipSwindall 6 лет назад +1

      I have a suction cup mount (shaky)... and a mount that connects to my rear view mirror... (still shaky)... I even tried putting magnet on the phone to correct the OIS problem... I don't advise that... my camera images get a little "wavy" from time to time now... I stopped using the magnets after about a day or two. The video WAS more steady, but, it wasn't clear.
      I'll try the slomo... although I'm curious as to how any recorded voices will sound when I'm finished with it

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  6 лет назад +1

      Voices will sound slow. :) If you’re recording dialog wouldn’t do slow motion. Sounds like you’ve tried several options. The gimbal has been our go to for this recently. Hope it works out for you!

      @iphoneographers  6 лет назад

      Thanks! And we hear you! Filmmakers today have so many great resources at their fingertips that just a few years ago we could’ve only dreamed of... For audio we really like the RODE VideoMicro. It’s a small camera mounted shotgun mic that works well with smartphones and sounds surprisingly great. We highlight it in our Wish List videos if you’d like to see it in action. For lav style mics we like the Sennheiser ClipMic Digital. We reviewed that mic and there’s a video on our channel as well. Lastly, we sometimes use traditional shotgun mics and double system sound (like with a Zoom recorder) and just use the phone for video.

    I'm not sure if you will be answering comments still on this post but I am wondering if you have any info on shooting 60fps in FILMIC Pro on the iPhone XS. As far as I know the new iPhone XS captures 60fps in their new high efficiency format which I could not import into Adobe premiere. I shot a whole bunch of cool stuff in Playa del Carmen Mexico only to get back home and not be able to convert it or even load it into my editing software. I even tried converting it in media encoder. Any suggestions? I've been only shooting 120fps since there isn't a problem with that.

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  5 лет назад

      We answer when we can. :) Are you on Mac or PC? On Mac you need High Sierra or later to read HEVC H.265. Later version of Media Encoder CC2018 should see it, too. We typically do a proxy workflow though using ProRes LT for 4K60 or just transcode.

    Hi guys, one question. Did you use the application stabilizer when shooting with the tripod?

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  6 лет назад +1

      Yes, in most cases as we have it saved in the preset - and we routinely go back & forth to handheld and don’t want to forget to turn it on. :) However, if you’re shooting a locked-off shot on a tripod and know you won’t be moving it, then turning IS off is probably best as it does slightly soften the image (not too much though in our experience).

      Hi, thanks! Appreciate you watching and your comment. We didn’t do these to make money. They were purely a creative outlet and a challenge we posed to ourselves.
      In saying that though, we do run ads on them here on RUclips and they help drive traffic to our channel and other videos along with our website. So from a business perspective you could call them a loss leader.
      We have considered putting them all together as one long experimental anthology style video and putting them on Amazon Prime. There you can not only widen our audience, but also monetize it. But long story short, we really made them just to do it. :)

    Why shoot in flat and not always in log? What's the advantage of using one or the other?

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  5 лет назад +1

      Now we’d probably shoot log all the time except in very low light. That’s because Filmic Pro had a recent big update to LogV2. Before we only shot log outside in very bright light because in lower light or inside it could get super noisy in the shadows. Now that’s not the case, although shooting flat or natural can save you time in post-production as you don’t have to do as much color correction. But log gives you the most dynamic range.

    Hi, this is really REALLY great. I'm an amateur artist making music videos. I could watch your stuff all day, but particularly interested in this somewhat restricted set of variables across these short movies. (Disappointing to see so much negativity in the comments though...) Question: did you not use any attachable lenses in any of these movies? Some have that anamorphic look. Just curious since you note using only phone and tripod.

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  6 лет назад

      Hey thanks for watching and your question! We used an anamorphic lens on Reverse Cycology and a Macro lens on Macrocosm. Those were actually the last two we did (and Macrocosm was done a few weeks after the main 20 short films). Otherwise it was just the phone and tripod for the other 19 movies.
      Btw, overall the positive feedback far outweighs the negative, so it’s all good. When you put your videos/films/art etc. out to the world not everyone is going to like or understand them. And especially on RUclips. 😃 Best of luck with your music videos!

    I installed Filmic Pro today and noticed that unlike MOMENT, Filmic Pro doesn't allow me to switch lenses on my iPhone 7 to choose wide lens. Is it because I already seleected wide lens with another program or am I just stuck at a lens that Filmic Pro has chosen for me? I'm disappointed at not having the option to chose lenses especially with a paid program, $16+ versus a free program like MOMENT that gave me the freedom to choose lenses. When I select camera on my iPhone it merely changes from rear to forward facing camera. Can you think of any tips to fix this? I'm not sure disabling the front camera is even an option. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  5 лет назад

      Hi, if your phone has dual cameras then Filmic Pro allows you to switch between them. In the Camera menu you can choose it there or you can zoom between the two. If you use zoom just make sure the zoom lever doesn’t show red (on screen right) or you’re doing a digital zoom. Keep it in the green and you’ll be optical. If you can’t see the dual lenses then you might need to reinstall the app or contact their support.

      -Shoot 4K 24fps
      -Use Natural color profile
      -Use the “full auto” mode autofocus (double click the normal small reticle to enlarge and it will be centered)
      -You can do the same thing with exposure if you like (full screen sample mode) or personally would lock it depending on the shot
      -Use the “orange” mode AWB. This will auto WB before you record, but will not change while you’re shooting (very important)
      -Use an external mic like a Rode VideoMicro or if using the phone mic make sure and select the proper front or back mic depending on what camera you use (in the audio settings)
