In this video, we will be talking about how to do speech therapy at home with children from ages 4 to 6. Firstly, if your child is 4-6 years old but hasn't begun to communicate with you. Check out the previous parts about speech therapy at home for 3-year-olds - the methods still work.
Why in this series we aren't going to talk about primary school-aged children, is because they are old enough for teletherapy to become the major method for their therapy needs. Obviously, as a parent, you still have to follow through with the home practice the therapist has given you. But you can at least be somewhat sure that the child can sit in front of a monitor to learn virtually - just as his/her other subjects.
To teach 4-6-year-olds, we need to start using more toys. And when we say toys, we mean using board games that have clear rules. We need to teach the game rules so that we can use the context to create a need to communicate.
Some examples of games we use are Uno, Funny Bunny, Jenga, Shoots and ladders, or any game that requires dice (not gambling of course!).
In the beginning, do not ask your child anything, just play and say simple sentences to describe what's happening. So that your child only need to learn the game rules.
Once you feel that your child can anticipate what's going to happen next. You can start to ask questions to teach language. Such as "who" questions - e.g. "who's turn is it?", "who is the green piece", "who went up the ladder?"... It really is up to you to create those questions according to how well your child knows the game.
Now you can then start to sabotage the game. By walking the wrong number of steps, cheat and take more cards, as long as your child can identify you're doing something wrong or stupid, you can probe the question "why". It's powerful because your child must answer the question instead of a memorized phrase. Or else you would stay there and the game would be unfair!
That's pretty much it for this video. Please subscribe, like, and comment on any questions you have about this type of therapy. And if you haven't, please go to www.agentsofspeech.com/checklist to get our home therapy tools and toys checklist!

Thank you! I found your video very useful but what should I do if the 4 year child is not ready to seat 1minute also in one place. Tried all the board games than small children toys. If another member starts playing to attract his attention , my son yells to keep the game in its place.
He is kind of hyperactive but good in singing, reciting rhymes but cannot reply to question asked even after teaching him, how to reply!
My 4years son has chronicle constipation, he is 6 months premature child.

Lata, then your first priority would be getting him to sit down with you nicely. Use rewards as much as you can to achieve that.
