I think I'm introverted for both because I feel weird talking to people irl but I also feel like there's a set pattern for talking online which bores me greatly, it's always "Hello" "Hey" "How are you" "Fine thanks" ect ect, if you get what I mean
Agreed! Although, I feel like the whole 'set pattern' thing is more common for people you haven't really gotten to know yet since when I'm online with a close friend the conversation can go on for hours and not get boring. When you don't know a person too well I think you feel kind of restricted as to what you can say because you don't want it to get awkward.
Annie Keyes I'm like you. I have close group of friends in real word that I feel comfortable talking to, and the same goes for online, texting etc. I'm really nervous when I have to talk on the phone with someone I don't know.
Definitely the same. i just consider myself to be socially awkward and i'm sure that a lot of us can relate to the fact that it's easier to talk to someone online or via text than face to face.
So good Cat:) I love these videos! I definitely fall into the latter... A lot of times I have to MAKE myself text people back, but I as you know would consider myself an extrovert! So interesting!
Same except I don't like to talk on the phone. I like to text, go on Twitter, & talk on Facebook. I have social anxiety, so I will only talk to people I feel comfortable with. I constantly feel like I'm not stage and everyone is judging me. So I avoid any social situations that trigger it. In real life, I keep to myself, unless I'm with my friends. Online, I'll talk to people, but when it comes to like group calls, I don't want any part of.
Octobris That's right. Many scientists, doctors, engineers, etc. are introverts. Without them we wouldn't be where we are today. Introverts tend to feel like there is something wrong with them because roughly 3/4 of the population are extroverts. I'm proud to be an introvert. Though, I hate having such a hard time trying to do small talk.
***** So technically, there is such thing as an introvert. E/I depends on how you focus your energy. That means that if you are introverted, you focus your energy inwards. Obviously you perceive that as "poor social training" when someone decides not to focus their energy outwards.
I'm definitely an introvert irl, I feel so exhausted talking to people and attempting to stimulate a conversation but when I'm really good friends with someone, I hate to talk to them online and much prefer to talk to them in person because the dynamic of the conversation just flows better. For ordinary people though, I'm more comfortable talking online! Great video Cat :)
you should really go into astrology because you can find reasons why people are introverted at first but then when you meet them act really extroverted or vice versa. Part of the reason is determined by the signs for their ascendant, moon, and sun sign. Your ascendant sign represents your persona and your midheaven determines your persona online. Just thought you should know:)
Definitely Extroverted for both!! I am always my complete self both ways. BUT in saying that sometimes I can be a bit of an Introvert outside of the internet etc because I may be in an uncomfortable environment where I am not Extroverted. I guess it depends on the people I am around! Internet is always Extroverted though ;)
I am definitely pretty extroverted when I talk online or text people but in real life I'm much more shy than online. Also you look so pretty in this video Cat! :)
I am just like you! INTJ at first then after looking more into it I am more an INFJ and I and introverted, but WAY more extroverted online. Thanks for making TYPRIFIC videos, it turns out I am interested in cytology type thingys and helped me to more understand people. Thank you!
This describes me so much. I'm so quiet and shy whilst outside around people, but i can talk (type) for hours online and I dont feel nervous or intimidated at all when talking online.
I think since you don't have to face anyone physically online, apart from RUclips, that introverts find it more comforting because they avoid being social while extroverts prefer human contact it makes sense that they don't enjoy online chatting or whatever.
I totally get what you mean. I seem to prefer talking to people online than actually seeing them face to face. When I'm with my friends IRL, I'm very shy, but when I'm on the phone, I talk a lot. XD I would definitely like to see more vids about this. :)
I do consider myself as an introvert. But when it comes to talking to new people face to face is really tiring. Even talking to people online and texting can be really exhausting. I guess i find it uncomfortable talking with people that aren't close friends or family. If there is no reason for me to talk with people i don't do it unless there is a special reason to do so.
I think I'm the same as you. As an example, When I was younger I used to meet all these new people online, speak for years and never meet them through being to chilled about it
I've found the same thing , I'm quite an introvert and I'm constantly talking to my more introverted friends online , but my more extroverted friends hardly ever talk online.
i'm the same :) extremely introverted irl, and extroverted online haha also this is completely unrelated but you looked especially pretty in this video!
I am totally extraverted online and introverted in real life. I would rather read a book then talk to someone but, when I am online I would rather email someone then call bc I am always afraid I am going to forget something so if I can I try to email someone when possible. I am actually trying to make RUclips videos and am worried about how they will turn out. But, sometimes I don't care and have then energy to call and I will talk to anyone to get information. Usually the only time I speak is when I know something about the topic really well!!
It actually makes sense: introverts use digital communication to extravert themselves... I'm like that too, probably because i lack self confidence, it's not always easy for me to communicate irl but it's different online (less pressure)
It actually makes sense: introverts use digital communication to extravert themselves... I'm like that too, probably because i lack self confidence, it's not always easy for me to communicate irl but it's different online (less pressure)
I'm an introvert irl, and at first, I thought we were the same way when you said you like to be at home and online. But then I realized, while I do prefer communication through my phone, I don't talk to that many people online or via text. I just lurk most of the time, and I don't make an effort to talk to people. So I guess, online and off, I'm an introvert.
I'm totally introvert because when people meet me they have this whole other perspective of me, and apparently see me as mean (I've been told this .-.) but when they speak to me they see how I really am :D Idk I guess I just give off this "don't fuck around with me" vibe when I'm in a group of people I don't know, or some defense mechanism. But I'm SOOOOO much better when I speak to people online, or text, anything where I can type words into. I feel like I can put more of my own opinion and get my thoughts out better, because again, as an introvert I tend to listen more rather than speak out. And when I'm texting or typing I feel like me and the person can both say whatever we want no matter the situation, like I get mad when people say "I'll tell you in person" cus in my head I'm like "I'm right here, why can't you just tell me now? It's the same thing." But extroverts are different in that way I guess :p
I'm totally an introvert irl and an extrovert online. I think it's because irl I'm surrounded by people I don't really like or care for but online I can find people that have the same interests as me and we can get on a lot more than people irl that I have nothing in common with. Though when I first started my twitter and things like that I used to be an introvert online but I think now that I understand the internet world I am more outgoing and welcoming to others online.
Totally extraverted irl. As said it feels extremely awkward talking online (for me) I feel like when you talk to people face to face, there's so much more to explore. For example face mimics tone sarcasm and much more that paints the dialogue with many colors. I'm not saying it's hard to be funny on the internet, just my way of communicating mostly is because of my "movements". Also I have talked about this with a few people that is: it sometimes depends on who you're talking to and the people surrounding you. It truly depends on the type of people around you whether you decide to be funny or be shy and quiet.
There needs to be a term for those who have a touch of both. And yes I agree they need to update their studies, especially today with all these different ways to communicate.

I'm definitely an introvert irl and more of an extrovert online, too.
This is a really interesting concept. I've never spent that much time thinking about this and I feel like there definitely needs to be a psychologist out there that needs to research this, lol. I'm introverted but I guess I can be more extroverted online. I think it's because I can actually choose which topic to interact with and which one to scroll pass. Plus you get to think for as long as you want before commented or you can edit your videos to your standards and you can't really do that in person.
I totally feel you! I describe myself as an extroverted introvert aha. I like talking to people but I need space at home and time to myself. Online though I can talk to anyone. It is strange isnt it? :) xxxx
Great insightful video, I've been wondering the same too Cat especially as people are using technology as a means of communication than talking IRL. I would say I'm naturally an extroverted person and texting is pretty much my port of call when it comes to keeping in touch with people I've met and friends but I hate using Facebook and I deleted my Twitter account because I never used it/felt uncomfortable doing so and I'd much rather text someone than call them which at first seems weird but what you said resonates with me - I much prefer seeing someone! Can't wait to see your follow-up vid :)
I know for a fact that I give a very standoffish vibe in public due to extreme awkwardness in social situations. People are genuinely surprised when they talk to me online because I am willing to hold up a conversation.
I definitely am an extrovert online and in real life. However, I am an ENFP which is the most introverted kind of extroverted, because I too feel like I need to hang out at home at times.
I think this also relates to social anxiety.. I am introverted offline which I am very awkward around people and I panic when i'm around groups of friends or family. During my online time I am extroverted I like to socialize through media and also make videos which makes me feel more interactive and comfortable. It's just very ironic.
I'm introverted too, but I tend to be way more extroverted when i'm talking to people in a form that doesn't involve being face to face. It also may just be my INFJ personality, seeming like an extrovert, so that may be a variable (what your personality type is).
Well according to Jung there is also ambiversion that has characteristics of both introversion and extroversion. An ambivert is mostly comfortable with social interaction and pretty spontaneous , but also likes spending time alone and facing his own inner world. :) I consider myself an ambivert and I guess most people do,too.
I'm introverted both IRL and online. I think texting is overused and I rarely comment on things online because I see a lot of meanness/immaturity there and I don't want to participate in that.
Hi Cat, I think being introverted and extroverted has a lot to do with your sense of personal boundaries, so would be absolutely relevant and interesting to explore what it means to "have boundaries" on the internet, and how this is dis/continuous with your sense of having personal boundaries in the real world!
I'm quite introverted irl and a little more extraverted online, and I that's because you have a little more distance between yourself and the ppl you talk to online/ when ttexting, so you have more control (it's easier to end the convo when you need online than irl) and therefore it's not as draining face to face communication can be. It's what makes it easier for me anyway, and it's easier to socialise longer when you can just focus on what's being said and process that, rather than what's being said+ body language+ whatever's going on around you at the same time. Does that make sense?
I think this might be the case because being online offers you the opportunity to be unknown or not have to have a one on one convo anyone else think so?
I'd definitely say I'm extroverted in real life but introverted online, I just find it too stressful thinking what words to write out/put online. Maybe it's because it's there longer for people to scrutinise? Looking at the comments it seems I'm the only person this way around haha
i dont think that there is an overlap between the two because an introverted person likes to communicate online because they feel safer or more comfortable not having to completely put themselves out there to make a friend of communicate.
I'm very social and outgoing IRL but like you, it takes energy for me and I need to recharge by myself so I'm introverted IRL. But online, like you again lol, I love social media so I'm an extrovert.
I am a very introverted person and my social anxiety is definitely not helping me in most social situations, but I find the communication online pretty easy and comfortable. I'm also great when it comes to talking to people via e-mails and texts, but if I have to talk with someone I don't know very well on the phone or in person, I freak out. :D
I feel way more comfortable online and through social media too. I spend countless hours on kik messenger..and hardly leave the house (But i'm working on that this summer!)
You know what is a random idea ? Don't worry about doberman dogs. That insane breed will soon be totally erased and breeding of that kind will be forbidden.
I never thought of it but I'm most definitely way more introverted in person than on the internet. I have a really hard time talking to people face to face because I feel put on the spot and nervous, but when I'm talking via the internet or texting my personality really shines through because the nervousness isn't present anymore. I'm a lot more clever and humorous when I'm communicating with others over the internet/phone rather than in person.
I feel exactly the same way. I'm hugely an introvert in person but online people get confused thinking someone else is talking from how extroverted my personality becomes online!
its easier to text and talk online since your not exactly with people so as an introvert you still get that time by yourself but you can still talk to people... its such a weird concept if you think about it
I'm pretty much the same as you cat but in the sense of irl I don't really think I'm too introverted but online I think I'm also less extroverted than you were talking about. I feel as though I'm just an eqaul mix of both an introvert and extrovert personality type.
I'm totally the same! Ö in real life everyone that I don't know very well thinks I'm to quiet. And online I post so much on facebook, I just can't stop talking (typing) I also Have a youtube. I think for facebook it's because my whole life people complaint about my voice "that it is to quiet" and most of the time I would tell something and nobody heared it so I don't like to speak, but in my brains their is a lot going on and I only can expres it via typing it out. It's a way that my voice finally can be heared , and I have more time to think before I speak without looking akward in socializing :p
I'm VERY Introverted in both ways. I enjoy hanging out but I always need to stay home to reboot for the next day. I also despise texting and calling because I prefer interacting in person than through cellular devices.
I am an introvert on both. I think. If I text too long I become drained, same can be said for face to face conversation. How ever when I am texting I filter my thoughts less and think a little faster so I am more likely to talk. Also I become drain at a much slower rate. On twitter I barely responded to anything anyone says. I keep to myself (as much as you can on a public account) and tweet about the little victories in my day to day life. Going on twitter dose not drain me at all. Kind of wish it did though, then I would waste less time on it! Haha!
found this really interesting! i looked it up and found this article which basically says exactly what you hypothesized: extroverts prefer to identify their true selves in person while introverts show their true selves online : www.researchgate.net/publication/11346051_On_the_Internet_no_one_knows_I%5C%27m_an_introvert_extroversion_neuroticism_and_Internet_interaction/file/d912f50b519bba4c57.pdf
I'm a total introvert and I have huge social anxieties. Tonight I'm going to a club by myself to see a band I really like. But I've been talking myself out of it all day. The club is just down the street from where I live - I just have to take 1 bus to get there. I've never been to a club alone before and I've only been to 1 or 2 with friends and hated it. Any advice?
I'm definitely introverted in person but more extroverted online. It's strange really. You'd think we wouldn't act differently because we are still talking to people regardless of what environment it's in.
I think I'm introverted for both because I feel weird talking to people irl but I also feel like there's a set pattern for talking online which bores me greatly, it's always "Hello" "Hey" "How are you" "Fine thanks" ect ect, if you get what I mean

Octobris That's right. Many scientists, doctors, engineers, etc. are introverts. Without them we wouldn't be where we are today. Introverts tend to feel like there is something wrong with them because roughly 3/4 of the population are extroverts. I'm proud to be an introvert. I feel way more comfortable online and through social media too. I spend countless hours on kik messenger..and hardly leave the house (But i'm working on that this summer!)
im a total introvert online and an extrovert in life XD
I'm just like you!
I'm an extrovert in both cases...
Interesting video. I'm introverted in real life and extroverted online.
Introvert for both, a bit less so online.
introverted for both? hahaha Im pretty sure
Introvert irl extrovert online
I think I'm basically the same as you!
I think I am an extrovert and all my friends tell me that I am, but Im very into vetted online and don't enjoy texting
its easier to text and talk online since your not exactly with people so as an introvert you still get that time by yourself but you can still talk to people... its such a weird concept if you think about it
I'm pretty much the same as you cat but in the sense of irl I don't really think I'm too introverted but online I think I'm also less extroverted than you were talking about. I feel as though I'm just an eqaul mix of both an introvert and extrovert personality type.
This was really interesting to watch! And you're absolutely gorgeous by the way!!
I'm an introvert in both haha
Wow.. maybe am also a little more of an introvert
I'm introvert both online and in real life
I'm totally the same!
Haha!
:::walks out of cave::: I'm introverted both in real life and online. :::hides in cave:::
found this really interesting! i looked it up and found this article which basically says exactly what you hypothesized: extroverts prefer to identify their true selves in person while introverts show their true selves online : www.researchgate.net/publication/11346051_On_the_Internet_no_one_knows_I%5C%27m_an_introvert_extroversion_neuroticism_and_Internet_interaction/file/d912f50b519bba4c57.pdf
I'm Ultraverted :D I am online when my clone is out partying and my clone is online when I am out partying #TotesTellingTheTruth
