I'll never for get Alan Kulwicki or Davey Allison. I followed and cheered for them both all through the mid 80s up until their deaths just a few months apart. They were my main guys all those years and I'll always remember the thrills, spills and excitement they brought to us all. I had other drivers I liked well like Mark Martin, Rusty Wallace, Kyle Petty and more, But Alan and Davy were tops in my book. Up until the late 90s or so when all the good guys were retiring I lost about 90% of my interest in NASCAR for many reasons. When Adam Petty and Dale Earnhardt lost their lives that was it for me. Letting Toyota in the mix was the final straw. NASCAR roots are gone and so are the great drivers who made it what is is!!!
Man buddy you summed it up pretty good Nascar has definitely gotten way too far away from its roots I wish someone like Dale Jr or Tony Stewart could take the reins and step into the roll as CEO of the sport if that were to happen I think first off just because of who those guys are and what they represent and how passionate they are about the sport would immediately start bringing fans back young and old but they keep trying to fix something that's not broken and they broke it by trying to fix it there's so many things as a fan but I can really sit back and say they're messing up really bad some things should stay the same like for instance the new car they got it's a cookie cutter the whole thing about NASCAR was the idea of innovation and trying to make your car faster it makes me think that NASCAR can pretty much dictate in a way if they wanted to who they want to crown the champion of the sport because they could possibly hand a team a better car than everyone else's to ensure that whoever they want to be champion will be that could very well happen probably not but still NASCAR is the governing body of the sport but it's almost like they've become communist and then the whole thing with bubble Wallace and banning people from being able to wave their Confederate flag that's tyranny That's History and fans have come to the tracks for years like Talladega and Atlanta and they've waved the Confederate flag and I don't think anyone was thinking about racism when they bought them flags out I'm from Georgia and that used to be our flag my goodness that bubble Wallace he really screwed some things up and even after the idiot was given proof that nobody was making threats against him or no racism was going on he still went on air with Don lemon and made it out as though that's exactly what was going on so he just kept it in a state of limbo he kept exaggerating things someone like that does not belong in the sport he don't even know what he represents he just wants attention because he can't drive a damn car and then he tried to compare herself with the first African American driver to win in the series and that's a big comparison people were actually trying to kill that man and that was during a time of segregation the whole Wallace is an idiot where does he get off trying to compare him self to Wendell Scott he's nowhere near the caliber and another thing Wendell Scott actually won the race Wallace just got a lucky rain delay because I'm almost positive if that race would have finished to its entirety he wouldn't have won and I doubt he ever will get a win he doesn't have the talent but I know one thing he coming to sport any wine and he cried because the half part of him that's black wanted to abolish history he is part of the problem not part of the solution when you start taking away freedoms and rights things that people may treasure that's part of History that is tyranny that is communism that is radical liberal douchebags I could go on and on and on about the sport but I know that they need to get that dang CEO out of there a driver belongs in that seat
Alan was a driver before my time, but going back and watching old footage always makes me emotional. He was a fantastic driver and deserving champion who did things in his own style, and I wish he had survived into the rest of the decade, much like Davey Allison...
In 1992, with 5 races left in the season, a friend and I sneaked into the pits at Dover- Alan had just crashed out, 250 points back. My friend wanted a picture with Alan, so I said, "Sure, I'll take your picture with the next Winston Cup Champion"...Alan looked at me like I done lost my mind. But if you ever got to meet Alan, talk with him for a few minutes, you knew his picture should be next to the definition for DETERMINATION.
People this was when I really followed NASCAR because these guys were the real deal!!!I miss Alan and Davey and Dale and Neil, I could go on and on,I really miss NASCAR back then!!! R.I.P. Alan and all who have lost their lives!!!!
If Alan Kulwicki were still alive today (2022), he would have long since retired as a driver, but probably would own a team in NASCAR and maybe even also a team in Indycar. And that team/those teams would have been very successful thanks to his leadership and mentoring.
He was from before my time but I can't imagine a guy like him who worked on his own cars would approve of spec cars, he probably wouldn't have approved of the COT or Next Gen.
It was because of Hooters love for Alan that a number of people got a chance to race in the Hooters Cup and Hooters ProCup series and showcase their talent. Matt Kensett comes to mind.
Say what you will …When we lost Alan and Davey that was the beginning of the end for the Nascar we loved and now miss! Dale Sr died and that finished it off! Now the sport is a bunch of entitled brats who aren’t ticks on any three of those guys butts!! Brings tears to my eyes every time I think about how the sport is completely ruined!!!
I remember this night well. I was working in a job I did not like very much. Came home about 930pm trying to work up the energy to go back the next day. I turned on the TV and saw all this happening. Felt totally deflated. Could not believe this was real after I had just watched him win the Championship that November. I listened to his acceptance speech at the awards that December. Hell of a guy he was.
the thing that was lost on most of the general public was just how good a driver Alan was. there have been many owner/drivers through the years, but not all of them were as talented behind the wheel as Alan was. that's what really made losing him so much more tragic; what else could he have done or accomplished in the coming years?
Alan left Wisconsin with a pick-up truck,a tool box and an engineering degree and a lot of determination and headed south hopefully too join NASCAR.He entered as the underdog and practically unnoticed.I could go on but as the saying goes"the rest is history".RIP to all departed NASCAR drivers. All the"heavy hitter"drivers are gone as the"heavy hitter"fans.🗽🗽🗽👍👍👍
I lived in Atlanta at the time. Every Hooters had "gone to race in a better place" on their signs. We thought it wouldn't get worse than this. Then, we lost Davey in July and Neil the following year. My dad almost walked away from the sport. It was too hard, but then 2001 came and we learned what hard is. We miss you Alan.
Saw him win at Pocono to get the championship. Those years of the true racing bumper to bumper are gone in my mind. That was the next to last race I went to see. Phoenix in 08.
1992 was a heck of a year if you were s nascar fan at that time. Petty was retiring, Gordon moved to cup and AK won the whole thing by a handful of points. Then 1993 happened. It's not supposed to be like that.
Living one town over from Bristol I remember that night well. I was leaving an autograph event when we heard about a plane crash near us. When we got home we found out Alan had been killed.
"I don't know what's worse - not having seen Alan Kulwicki in person during his lifetime because we were too young and not living on American soil, or the impossibility in every sense of seeing him with our own eyes and participating in the races of the time, or having known him and been present when he was racing and being there when he disappeared. I think both are equally frustrating in the end because Kulwicki, for me, was clearly one of the rare drivers who could have held his own against Dale, Jeff, and Johnson. Kulwicki had something unique - his paint scheme colors, his sponsor, his personality as a business leader mixed with a super-talented driver. His loss was heavy, and may he rest in peace with our Lord, Amen."
When the hauler pulled out on the racetrack , it was so quiet throughout the racetrack - everyone was in a sad daze - when the hauler pulled out I remember hearing grown men crying - myself included -
I remember Alan living in West Allis Wisconsin two blocks from my house in the late 60s riding his minibike around in the parking lot of city hall not real good friends with him but I knew who he was I knew his dad better because he worked for Racing team at Wisconsin State fair norm Nelson I miss the 60s watching Alan Fly around in the parking lots with his go cart or minibike wishing I could have something like that but I was only 12 Alan was about 15🏎🏎🏎
I remember that last race of the season . Pettys last race and his car caught fire, Bill won and Alan and his Underbird lead the most laps to win Winston Cup Champion as owner / driver just not done. But Alan did it. His way . Rest in Peace champ we may not have pulled for you every race but we knew you earned everything and that championship , no driver would have made us more proud. A Yankee boy that had the guts to come down South and run with the big dogs. You did well and became a big dog An underbird and now a freebird. Fly on.
Ironically it was a air craft crash that took my favorite racer Davey Allison! Also who was a real racer that wouldn't take racing orders and then the next year was when Ayrton Senna steering column broke and we lost the greatest ever! I am thinking not coincidence!

Yeah. All that's left is a mere shadow of what NASCAR once was...if you can even call it that.
So well said
Toyota is fine

Three Months Later July 1993 Davey Allison died in a Helicopter Crash in Talladega Speedway.
God bless their souls

I was only 10 years old when he died and 11 when Davey Allison died 30 and 29 years ago now I'm 40, it was sad in them months

Part of me wonders if Alan post his championship thought to himself for a moment. "Huh that guy in Dover was right."
God bless Alan Kulwicki.
May he rest in peace
Man that still hits hard. Alan and Davey. Legends in Valhalla
Great driver. I loved to watch him race.

Tough year for a Ford fan in 1993. Alan and Davey were 2 amazing drivers. There was a few championships between them I'm sure.
Say what you will …When we lost Alan and Davey that was the beginning of the end for the Nascar we loved and now miss! Dale Sr died and that finished it off! Definitely a Class act and a Legend Rest in peace

When Alan's semi circled the Bristol track for the last time it was one of the saddest days in NASCAR.😢

Not sure what the deal is but there have been SO MANY racing legends that have died in plane crashes.

We were there watching, the morning they drove the hauler the opposite direction around the track, then out the gate for the last time…
I'll never understand why they ruin videos like this with music. You can't even hear wtf they're saying

Miss Alan and davey. They should not have died, that early. They where the best. Remember Davey wrecking or winning

Though I did not live anywhere close to that time, I wonder how different NASCAR, even just those years they would have been drivers
My family and I were on vacation at Disneyworld when we heard the news about this.
Alan was the guy that showed me one person can make a difference. Use your brain, put in the effort, and there's no limit to how far you could go.
Alan did it his way
My third cousin drove the Hooter's Thunderbird following Alan's death.
So sad...
He was the only one who made me feel special and berry was from punks brother for my birthday the 2nd one before this
7 days before kaite was born he died
I remember both Alan and Davey both killed in 1993
My first race was the 92 Bristol race that he won
I saw his last race at Atlanta Motor Speedway.. witch he won,
My almost Dad
That was really cool 😎
Katie dad is alan k
