  • Darrell Waltrip wowed fans with his driving, irked competitors with his words and left his mark on the track and in the broadest booth. As a three-time NASCAR championship driver, before he became an owner and then earned a new fan base as a broadcaster for FOX TV, he earned - and owned - his nickname of Jaws.
Watch this incredible and very candid interview in this episode of "The Garage Shop Insider" Podcast.

I love listening to Darrell talking about his history. I was there when he ran his first race at Talladega in the #95 Terminal Transport Trucking Car. My dad drove for that company out of Atlanta. I can remember my Dad coming in from a run that Sunday morning telling me that Terminal Transport was sponsoring a car in that race. He told me about Stevie's Grand Dad, making that happen through Texas Gas. When Darrell pulled in the garage area, me and my best friend snuck in the garage to see him.

Big time DW fan here. Saw him at Performance Chevrolet in Durham, NC back in '88, the week before the Fall Martinsville race. Had his car there that went on to Victory Circle that weekend. I had a radio controled car with the 1988 Monte Carlo body made up to look just like his Tide Ride that he signed for me. I still have that car.

My favorite one-liner by 'ole DW was the last Daytona 500 I ever attended, in '89, where he won the race strictly on fuel mileage. He didn't pit for fuel during the last scheduled stop, which put him in 1st place, and he was literally about to run out of gas during those final laps. It was a huge deal, because DW was one of a few drivers eligible to win the million dollar Unocal bonus money. I can't recall if it was right after the race, later that night, or even the next day........but some reporter asked him: "How much gas did ya really have left in that tank Darrell?"........... he looked at the reporter with a sh*t eatin' grin and said: "A million dollars worth".........LOL!!! That was priceless.

I was just 18 year old kid and went to the Poconos race. Waltrip was running the 11 car, and the spectators were booing the man? I didn't know why? Guy, next to me said, that's waltrip he's terrible, race car driver, a few more laps went by, I leaned over and said to this guy if he's so terrible how come he's winning the damn race. Looks pretty good to me. This guy was like shshsh!! Don't talk good about him you won't make it out of here alive. Halfway through the race, I went and bought a waltrip shirt. That guy leaned over again said don't talk to us anymore. That was my first Nascar race. Waltrip was one of the best.

This was not at all what I expected. I never really liked Darrell as a race car driver; I thought he was too cocky. When I saw that this video was going to be 50 minutes long, I figured I'd watch for 10 minutes or so just to see what Darrell was like these days. Instead, I watched and enjoyed the entire conversation. He remains a "confident" person, but he also very engaging. Your conversation drew out some good stories from him. Incidentally, while I was never a Darrell Waltrip fan, his chrome Western Auto paint scheme is my all-time favorite NASCAR paint job. Even with all the fancy things that they can do with computers and vinyl wraps, I still like the white, orange, black and shades of gray Western Auto paint job.

I live in Newcastle Australia and when DW went around Bathurst in a V8 supercar, it would've been an eye-opening experience. Find and watch it, he's commentary of Bathurst is funny. I really enjoyed this episode. Thank you.

He didn't change enough to lay off wrecking Davey Allison at Pocono. He didn't need to do that.
