I know this video is a year old, but I just wanted to point out to anyone new to this that some people can be allergic to certain materials so you should always test it out on your bunny first and wait to see if there is a reaction before getting too in to tying them up. And if you’re the bunny, and already know you’re allergic to certain materials then you need to let your rigger know before hand. That’s all part of the SSC. 😊
I am so glad you brought this up! Its so valid. Like poly makes me break out in hives but nylon is fine. It may be reverse for others, but reactions to materials is no fun. If you are unsure, check what labels you have on your clothes =) Some spaces might be more sensitive than others as well. like my arms can tolerate poly better than my neck. But if it gets anywhere near my collarbone or neck within seconds im having a miserable reaction where my skin is hot, red and unbearable itchy. Where as my arms its just highly uncomfortable. So testing things on sensitive spots is really important. Sometimes you just dont know cause you dont really do it to yourself but its always good to test and be aware so everyone can have fun =D Changing a material isnt a big deal, having to change a scene on the fly you arent prepared for also probably not a big deal, but having issues with materials really gets to you.
The reasons why hemp and specifically jute are preferred for anything involving full or partial suspension is because the ropes don't stretch under tension, and they have much higher friction when pressed against each other in knots and frictions so that they do not slip or loosen once tied. Synthetics feels nice and looks wonderful for ground work. The right rope for the right purpose!
I have hemp and it does stretch under tension over time. I stopped using it because it always goes loose after about an hour and thins out. I stick to cotton now, and for suspension I use that thick flecked blue rope you get in DIY stores (forget what it's called but it's heavy duty), which does not stretch at all on my ratchet winch. I just wish they made it in a monotone colour, as the blue with red and white flecks are not aesthetic at all.
My circle actually uses the same natural fiber for both harnesses and up lines but they definitely need to be replaced often, and I haven't seen sessions of suspension that lasted an hour... usually it's only a few minutes.
@@McWeenyKen I will ceed to your knowledge. I'm on top of mount stupid right now with only a few books and some basic western tying. I have heard it advised against by a Shay Tizano in "Tying and Flying" as well as a few riggers who do beautiful work which I've seen. I am also curious if it's more of an issue if you do more dynamic "circus" (not sure if that's derogatory, but it's what an amazing person who does it herself calls it) work, where the loads may be much less predictable.
I agree, long sessions with multiple transitions and a very dynamic load will put much more strain on any rope. Our style is more about suffering and less circus-y.
Ah the wait for this video has been sweet, and fun. All of your other videos have made the wait less noticable. I love the unbiased discussion you conduct. Thank you for your input and knowledge!

I got my rope RIGHT before this came out darn. I ended up with 50ft of synthetic. I had to go digging through your tictok comments to find the size but I made it out the other end! Thank you for the info I was worried about how to clean it😁
Yes! This is something that I've always wondered about. Obviously you'll need more rope, but any suggestions on that front? Are there certain ties that should be done differently or certain areas of the body that shouldn't be constricted as much?
Plus size bunny here. You can do all the same ties, but will need to join two lengths of rope together. Other than that, there is literally nothing different!
@@eileendemott2338 my go to is Knothead Nylon, but ultimately if you're looking for synthetic ropes that are easy to maintain, agreeableagony.com sells MFP which is similar to nylon in properties
I havent watched the whole video yet so I may leave another comment, but I just wanted to say when I realized you were using a meat tenderizer as a pipe I snort laughed 🤣🤣😍😍
When you made the daisy chain for washing I immediately thought of the basis for every crochet project, your classic chain stitch. Makes one wonder what could be done with rope and maybe a very large hook 🤔
I have seen a very lovely knit fence on the internet. I think rope and a crochet hook could do something very similar. I can’t imaging the hand and wrist strength you’d need, let alone the patience, but it would turn out pretty cool!
So overall, this was a fun introduction. You are an entertaining presenter. If you’re not that informed about suspension, I would suggest leaving that out of your videos so you aren’t giving incorrect information, however. That’s much higher risk than decorative or floor work. Most people do not use bamboo for suspension as it is stretchy and not very strong. Hemp, jute and various synthetics are more common choices since they are stronger, but most people do not use that wide a variety of lengths. Hempex is a nice solution for those who want the strength of synthetics with the feel of natural fiber. Additionally, if people are going to wash their natural fiber ropes as you suggest, they should be tried under tension and re-oiled or waxed after. Folks should also be aware the dye could leak if they wash colored rope like this on a warm cycle. I’d proceed with caution.
How do you do your storage loops like the ones on the wall behind you? What are the things to keep in mind when storing your rope? I had another question I wanted to ask but I got distracted by the beautiful bubblegum pink rope in the background. All the best to you and yours
Don't forget that the earliest Egyptian reed boats were effectively lashed, which led on to rope-sewn wood planking. A different heritage in Eastern Europe led to log canoes developing outriggers which eventually reduced the canoe to the keel, in particular in the Roman grain ships, which were the first to need cables. There are, consequently, several layers of twist, each counter-laid compared to the previous. Cables come from ropes, ropes from twined-thread strands. It's only when you reach the lowest level the strands open as feathers, such as you find in tassels. And that's before you start considering cored cables such as those used in climbing and tightrope. Way past the SSC boundary, though.
