Do not be tense, just be ready, not thinking but not dreaming, not being set but being flexible. It is being “wholly” and quietly alive, aware and alert, ready for whatever may come -Bruce Lee
Despite his obvious annoyance you can tell Spike was low key having a good time teaching this guy how to fight. Rocco must have rubbed off on Spike reminding him of himself.
Nearly every episode is sad. The last two episodes are like "Jurassic Bark" levels of sad. The only really funny episode where nothing bad happens is the mushroom one.
0:38 Take notice of the synchronization between the visuals and what spike is saying. Notice how the floating islands look like fish moving along a river current with no resistance.
It probably is his view, but that doesn't mean it isn't intentional, far from it. Instead of cutting to an unrelated scene that is more literal, it sets up the view and helps reinforce the concept.
Spike from the series uses Jeet Kune Do, although the principles of softness and fluidity overcoming raw force can also be found in taijiquan, aikido, and any kung fu style described as "soft" or "internal" (ie. baguazhang, xingyiquan). Even judo and jujitsu apply this philosophy, though I'm not sure as to the extent. In taijiquan and aikido it is central to the style.
This scene came to me while trying to end my addiction to alcohol. I viewed my triggers to drink as Rocco and my mental readiness to face said triggers as Spike. And now I’ve had the longest stretch of sobriety I’ve had in more than 15 years.
To be fair, this philosophy is super old, and has existed for a long time, way before Bruce Lee's time. It was Bruce Lee who was able to bring this philosophy to the spotlight.
Well geez, I'm sorry that people typically relate things with similar base concepts to each other, especially with something as commonly popular a Dragon Ball. Seriously, stop taking it as a personal insult to the show when the two things are literally based on the exact same philosophy.
“You must be shapeless, formless, like water. When you pour water in a cup, it becomes the cup. When you pour water in a bottle, it becomes the bottle. When you pour water in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Water can drip and it can crash. Become like water my friend.”
It's kind of neat with the whole "don't think, just react" mindset of ultra instinct taking some cues from Jeet Kune Do. Kind of makes the similarities more obvious when you see Whis take a Wing Chun based stance in the movie.
So you're telling me this is the guy who could have told goku how to master Ultra INSTINCT the day he learned about it.....I think I'll finally watch Cowboy bebop for once
Only reason he's so calm cause he thinks he's already dead so he wouldn't care what happened to him and kinda because he smokes he smokes yo relieve him of all the stressful sad things in his past so he dosen't care if he lives or dies. You get my drift
Is this that one episode where he teaches this guy how to fight and then in the end part the guy was able to fight properly while doing a good deed but then died soon after?
Never watched this anime and don’t plan to. But this scene is one of countless examples of Bruce Lee and his English-dubbed films’ impact on modern anime/manga (within the last 50 years).
Episode is my favorite the same time the most depression one it sucks though because there’s people who do bad deeds but they have good intentions and sometimes it end up getting killed or going to jail
All these clowns talking about "Ultra Instinct". Every great fighter eventually learns this lesson. Goku is pretty late to the game, if you ask me. Bruce Lee was a prodigy for several reasons. He was considered a kinetic genius and learned personally from Ip Man himself the martial art of Wing Chun, a fighting style that is specifically focused on controlling and redirecting your opponent in close quarters combat. And for anyone who didn't know, Wing Chun was developed by a woman. Bruce was also an avid street fighter and a bit of a thug before he traveled to America. He was focused on eliminating "unnecessary movement" from his fighting style, which drove him to reject many of the more-traditional Chinese styles, which he thought were too flashy and not practical for actual combat. Also keep in mind that in America, there was almost no one who could match his unique skill, but when Lee would visit Hong Kong, he was never able to best Ip Man and only considered himself the fourth best martial artist in Ip Man's school. This video is literally a re-telling of the famous Lee interview where he says, "Be water, my friend." And if anyone forgot, the first scene of Cowboy Bebop is literally Spike training shirtless.
everything dat made you think is not clowns man :D Now how are you sure about Bruce lee either give me a honest reaction of 1 of his practitioners or students i mean a real surprise etc. 90 percent of the ppl are sure of something dat didnt even trained or tried themselves for a long periods of time :) think about
Alex Amaya Alex Amaya. How about this. You shut the fuck up instead. Also, read a book. Bruce Lee, by HIMSELF, made the phrase "Be water" famous and synonimous with the idea of martial arts. I'm getting tired of little punks like you suggesting someone like Bruce Lee was an "amateur". You're seriously going to suggest he's more famous for his ACTING? His acting was TRASH compared to his skills as a martial artist. He's not admired for his acting skills. He's admired for his PRESENCE and his unmatched confidence in himself and who he was.
The attention to detail in in the backround animation is fucking incredible. The way the ships just cut through the sky the shades of the sunset. Anyways nerding out, love this anime.
Bought Bebop on two DVD sets. Each has the English dubbing missing from this scene. Thankfully it's here on RUclips but why not include the Bruce Lee teachings on DVD? Is it copywritten from another film. Anyone else have this issue? Does the Blu Ray include this scene in full?

His death unironically hit harder than Spike's tbh. Roco was just a good guy who was at the wrong place with the wrong people :(

Alex Duper Sweet sorrow.
Do not be tense, just be ready, not thinking but not dreaming, not being set but being flexible. It is being “wholly” and quietly alive, aware and alert, ready for whatever may come
-Bruce Lee
That's basically what he meant by "become a water", just be flexible and mold yourself to your environment while also be true to yourself.
I love how this is basically Spike's personality. Such a quiet and careless guy who deep inside is ready to destroy a whole army
Despite his obvious annoyance you can tell Spike was low key having a good time teaching this guy how to fight. Rocco must have rubbed off on Spike reminding him of himself.

Little details like that, are what make Cowboy Bebop exceptional.
Wow, analogy along with visual assistance, how great. Couldnt it also be the view point of the guy on the ground looking up?

I’ve actually applied this idea in a few things in real life and it’s crazy how much it actually works
It's actually a Taoist concept. Wu wei.
Wu wei is a concept literally meaning "inexertion", "inaction", or "effortless action"
Yeah it’s life advice from Taoism
How so?
Spike speaking influence of how to apply yourself to the motion of the fight. Simply amazing and an excellent Bruce Lee lesson
I like how Spike channel's Bruce Lee's teachings.
It's not just channeling, he's an actual fan of the historical Bruce. He's even seen buying nunchuks in a bizarre in one of the episodes.
if it weren't for this episode i would never have taken up martial arts. and I discovered Bruce lee
Good to hear, if you have any request maybe I could help :)
