More than 100,000 died in the US last year of an overdose - the majority of which were from synthetic opioids like fentanyl.
Up to 50 times stronger than heroin, it’s scarily easy to overdose when using fentanyl.
Newsnight’s correspondent in San Francisco, James Clayton, has been speaking to a former addict about how addiction took over his life - and how he nearly died.

So, ummm great report and all. But, the elephant in the room here is of course: Why is this happening? And its really dissapointing that this question isnt adressed at all.
Lots and lots of reasons, I'm sure. In an immediate sense, China. Then there the criminalisation fo drugs. There's poverty, unaffordable housing etc.
@@velvet1865 Im sure those play a role yes, but any city deal with the issues you mention. London, Paris, Bangkok, Tokyo... You name it, they all have rising housing prices, poverty, the growing influence of China and in most European cities, certainly drugs. But these kinds of scenes of an epidemic with an open-air drugs market right in the downtown area of major cities seems an issue very specific to North America. The only European city that has anything like what is happening here is possibly Frankfurt, but thats only in a very small 4 block area with police keeping a close eye on things.
American doctors write 130-150 million opioid prescriptions every year. Only the US and New Zealand make it legal to advertise prescription drugs on TV. It depends on what time period you look at but 60-75% of American addicts’ first use of opioids is through a legal prescription.
The economy and work culture arguably contribute to it as well. Americans work hard and it can be hard to take much time off; when there’s an injury a lot of people pop the pills and push through it.
The illicit drug market is also huge (although yes, chicken and egg), about 3x the value of Europe’s even with a smaller population. It is physically enabled by the aforementioned trade with China and porous border with Mexico.
@@acslater017 So, how are doctors allowed to do this? Didnt they swear an oath to act in the best interest of the patient over there? I mean that as a more general statement, im sure that you personally dont exactly know either, but that is just so weird. But even if that is the case, how come the police, the city or the federal government can be "ok" with this happening? I mean, this isnt some dark corner in some slum area nobody cares about. This is right in the middle of the downtown in broad daylight. Thats the weirdest part of it to me. All these buildings must be super expensive, and if these people werent here, probably a very desirable area to live in. So it seems that authorities have all the incentive in the world to get rid of this situation, yet we see it in so many NA cities...
A lot of these people are entitled adults acting like children, it's sad but true. A lot of the others are failed by the health care system, mental illness, TBI, and the elderly put out on the street.
The only time I was in San Francisco was December 2015. It wasn't this bad then.
Congrats to Brian for staying clean! As someone in long-term recovery, this made me grateful for recovery to the max.
What a scene: the church giving shelter to these poor souls. An oasis of hope in a a hopeless world.
My local Mormon church did that for a few years but then a woman got stabbed while handing out free food. Something seriously needs to be done about the drug crisis
Be the person who breaks the cycle. If you were judged, choose understanding. If you were rejected, choose acceptance. If you were shamed, choose compassion. Be the person you needed when you were hurting, not the person who hurt you. Vow to be better than what broke you-to heal instead of becoming bitter so you can act from your heart, not your pain.
But pain heals our wound and if we don't get any pain from unexpected thing we can not be able to get up. Pain teaches us everything not only to be strong.

Bryan is one of the lucky ones. At least eight people in my daughter and son's close circle passed away from fentanyl and similar drugs. A few lost limbs. All started with Sacklers' damn oxycontin...usually prescribed.

Yep. They literally gave me codeine then tramadol and finally oralmorph like sweets for years. Now I need to take methadone for the foreseeable future purely for the opiate dependency I've got. My only positive is at least I don't live in the states as I would absolutely be addicted to oxycontin (although I did buy it a couple of times from the dark Web and was the nicest thing I've ever experienced).

_A hardcore drug addict from Tampa Florida comes here, lives on the streets (literally just below my building, shown numerous times in this video), commits all sorts of petty crime to feed his habit, urinates and defecates on the pavements outside my building, racks up hundreds of thousands of dollars in hospital bills to my city _*_(AND I AM SUPPOSED TO BE FEELING SORRY FOR HIM)???_*
Things are far worse for him. Sympathy costs nothing. Don't lose your humanity. Then look for solutions. Perhaps work in the political system to make change. Volunteer with help groups. It's your neighborhood, so what are you doing to make change other than moaning on RUclips?

Helping people too reliant on drugs is not as simple as you think, because the most common addict is mostly self destructive to the point they don’t want to help themselves, I know people who work in addict recovery, they say more then half the people submitted for recovery don’t stay sober. Those that get sober will fall down the slope more then once and each fall is worse then the next. Those who get sober and stay sober are extremely rare. Most people don’t change unless they want to change. And considering there is no easy access to recovery and drugs are everywhere. More people lack self control and they don’t take advantage of any help or therapy even when it’s given to them for free, addicts in S.F. have taken advantage of people’s kindness and benefits and stay on drugs. Also have an addict in the family, I have insight to how they think along with their brain dead friends, they use people who are kind as doormats, they see suckers who feel sorry for them and are willing to give them money out of pity and use them as ATMs for their next fix.

It’s really very hard to watch this videos on addiction and death by drug overdoses. We can see this happening in almost every downtown area, (homeless) shelter homes and subway stations. Hopefully 🤞 everything gets better someday for everyone and no more addiction issues left. ❤️🩹
Similar story only i never allowed myself to become homeless bc i had parental help the entire time. Got hit by a car and won a lawsuit. My dads a real estate agent so he helped me buy a condo. I housed many an addict!

I wonder who paid his medical bills.
Been a heroin addict for about 6 years, Withdrawal is hell on earth. I have a methadone prescription which helps but I still use most days. I'm awaiting in-patient rehab but it's a long waiting list. While fentanyl has hit the UK, mostly the main cities like London, and I have come across it where I live, I'm at least somewhat lucky that I smoke it instead of pinning it, but I've heard of people overdosing it even by smoking.

A plant/tree native to Indonesia and Malaysia. It's saving many lives. I was never on that stuff, but stimulants, cathinones and more. Never opiates. Kratom does build tolerance, but it can almost mitigate withdrawals. Just putting it out there mate.
