"Leaving on a Jet Plane" is a song written by John Denver in 1966 and most famously recorded by Peter, Paul and Mary. The original title of the song was "Babe, I Hate to Go" but Denver's then producer Milt Okun convinced him to change the title.
The song was initially recorded in 1966 by John Denver with the title "Babe, I Hate to Go." That same year, Denver chose this song along with fifteen others and, with his own money, had 250 copies pressed onto vinyl. He distributed the copies to friends and family. Peter, Paul and Mary were so impressed with the song that they chose to record it themselves and released it on their 1967 Album 1700. Notably, it didn't become a hit for them until they released it as a single in 1969.

Lyrics:
All my bags are packed I'm ready to go
I'm standin' here outside your door
I hate to wake you up to say goodbye
But the dawn is breakin' it's early morn
The taxi's waitin' he's blowin' his horn
Already I'm so lonesome I could die
So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go
Cause I'm leavin' on a jet plane
Don't know when I'll be back again
Oh baby, I hate to go
There's so many times I've let you down
So many times I've played around
I tell you now, they don't mean a thing
Every place I go, I'll think of you
Every song I sing, I'll sing for you
When I come back, I'll bring your wedding ring
So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go
Cause I'm leavin' on a jet plane
Don't know when I'll be back again
Oh babe, I hate to go
Guitar Solo
Now the time has come to leave you
One more time let me kiss you
Close your eyes I'll be on my way
Dream about the days to come
When I won't have to leave alone
About the times, I won't have to say
So kiss me and smile for me
Tell me that you'll wait for me
Hold me like you'll never let me go
Cause I'm leavin' on a jet plane
Don't know when I'll be back again
Oh baby, I hate to go
Cause I'm leavin' on a jet plane
Don't know when I'll be back again
Oh baby, I hate to go
My oldest brother shared a story just yesterday about this song and I would like to share it with you all. He went overseas (Vietnam) on July 17, 1971. Aircraft maintenance, RIGHT! Stationed in "The highlands" Quong tree province. Door gunner/crew chief on a Huey. Shot down three times..... After 365 and a wake-up, my brother boarded a plane back to "The world". This song was playing just as the plane left the ground. Thank you, God for bringing my brother home. The families of the many friends he made there were not blessed with their loved ones return as I was. I give thanks to all that served. Welcome home bro......
He's one of the lucky ones. My cousin wasn't as fortunate. He was killed in action on March 5,1966 (aged 22). Operation Cocoa Beach, Don Dien Lo Ke, Republic of Vietnam. Posthumous Army Medal of Honor recipient.
@@madmax8949 Old Glory waves in my yard every dawn and comes down at sunset in honor of him and many others. May he rest in peace and his soul touch the face of God.
@@RideaGoodRoad Thank you! I think of him every day.

I don’t know why I was always afraid to make a comment before, but I’d love this group and I’ve loved them forever and ever I’m 67 now and I’ve love them all my life and I miss them so much and I wish music could be like this today
Nicely written ~ from your heart

When I hear that song, it gives me sad memories of the Vietnam War, I graduated in 1969, what a terrible time in my life, I didn't want to leave my girl friend, but left for the army in 1970, in 1973, I married her and still is married 48 years in April
That's a beautiful story and thank you for your service. God bless
Thanks for your service in vietnam bro........from singapore ex commando.
you came back--you made that woman so happy--me too
wonderful story
It was one of the greatest 'short timer' songs. The other being the Animals "I gotta get out of this Place."
Dec 9 1969, 4:30 in the morning, still dark, im with my wife at Hickam AFB waiting to board a flight to Vietnam n this song comes on. So many memories
*_This song just seems to have that sort of effect on people, doesn't it?_*
I am 70 yrs. OLD. In 2018 I met my one and only husband! He is 71!
I had 2 cousins in Vietnam! Because
Of singers like Peter, Paul and. Mary
We were able to salvage good memories of those times! Thank you for showing this program
i feel in love with this song in 73 when my daughter was born in 1993 i held her in my arms and sang this to her almost everyday until she was too big to do so. this may she is getting married and it will be the song we will dance and cry to
Very sweet!! Godspeed to the bride and groom as well as to her Dad. Makes me miss my own Dad who loved this song too.
This song invokes, memories and deep feelings of love, sadness, and yet Hope I’m glad to see the future
3 voices, 2 guitars and pure talent so much missed these days. Thank god i still keep all my old vinyl to listen to as well.
There is also a bassist who we never see.
Her voice is magical. I got chills.
I grew up with P,P,&M ! I’m just shy of 67 ; there’s no one like them .❤😢
My generation * this era of music would not trade it for anything ,,,,,, It's true to life !
Another angels voice is now in heaven... Mary, RIP.
What a classic. The voices of Peter, Paul, and Mary and a song written by John Denver.
Written by Cass Elliot.
@@Tykewarrior Nope, she mentioned, jokingly, she wrote it and lets John sing it when she sang it with him but John wrote it.
@@beesknees9533 I stand corrected, thank you.
RIP Mary....you three were the best trio singing folk music. I listened to your music up at our cottage when I was 5,now I am 61. Everyone else played euchre. 🙏🌈🦋❤🌹
One of the greatest "folk songs" trio that ever lived, even to this day!
THE greatest folk trio ever.
Totally agree. Harmonies so fabulous.

This song was played at my grandmas funeral, though I didn’t get much time with her I still do miss her. For 3 years she’s been gone and I’ve gotten better, though it still pains my mother and aunt greatly.
when i hear Mary sing this song my memories transport me back to 1969, and I'll just leave it there.
Summer of 1990 for me...still tear up when I hear this song
I remember this from the fall of 69. I was a senior and I would graduate in June. Sweet memories of my last year as a kid!
We used to dance around the stereo as kids to Peter Paul & Mary……I was 6 my sister and brother 8& 10…..these were salad days …..beautiful harmonies …. What a great trio ❤
john Denver wrote this amazing song.
I arrived in Da Nang, South Vietnam on 2NOV1969 and flew to my carrier in the Tonkin Gulf when this song was just released. It holds sad memories for me.
Welcome Home Patriot. 🙏♥️😞

Her voice could melt glass, especially in this song. Can't listen without crying. But still listen.

Puff does that to me. This song is so beautiful, Denver may have written it, but they O W N it.
I became familiar with this song around the young age of seven. My mother always turned the radio on every morning on school days .The song will always bring back good memories,RIP Mother 💐
Peter,Paul & Mary are a treasure & all their classics are an eternal blessing !
Vocal groups and Studets in Indonesia loved this SONG so so much in 1970 ies THANK YOU John Denver n PPM...
every time I board a jet plane, this song comes to mind, just love this number too much !!
Love this song. I was fortunate enough to see them in concert once. We need more like them.
She had a beautiful voice
I was singing this song in my head while boarding a plane for MCRD leaving the love of my life. With a heavy heart I proceeded not knowing if I was going to return or not.Thankfully I did return safe and sound. God Bless.
YEH its got meaning for me,,
I remember coming home from MCRD in 1983 and hearing this song.
Vietnam Vet Loves Mary Travers. Leaving on a Jet plane.
I bought this when it came out. I was exactly the age when i could have been called up. But Harold Wilson refused to join in. God bless your memory, Harold.
Mary had an incredible voice.
Powerful song
Mary..RIP..You and your talent are truly missed...
Awesome voices
I loved this song when PP&M sang it in the early 60s, and I love it still in 2024. God bless this wonderful group whose sincerity and love touched so many hearts. 🙏
Lawrence - US Army medic - 1966-69
Terence
- your version was great.
My version was the opposite- I mustered out in Jan. 69 in San Francisco & was spit on & called a baby killer even though I was a medic.
Returned home to 20 people waiting in the airport for me - including mt love.
Went to her house where she introduced me to her fiancé-
There was no way for me to hide or leave so I toughed it out.
Some relations work & some do not- I’m happy that yours did!
Magnificent Masterpiece, very beautiful piece of legendary music, Mary Travers was so beautiful and a wonderful singer
Mary's Voice On This Song!!! Priceless
If u dont get teary eyes listening to this, you're not human !!!
Lasting memories of beautiful song, sung by beautiful voice.Brings tears down your cheek.
Back in the early 70’s my second grade teacher (Miss Green)
used to play Peter, Paul and Mary every day in our classroom. Tunes like “If I
had a hammer”, “Leaving on a jet plane”, “Puff the magic dragon”.
Thanks to her I became politically active and financially independent.
Thanks Miss Green.
The song was released in October of '69 just weeks after I returned from Vietnam. It was a huge anthem for returning Vets.
jpavlvs this song brings me too tears when I hear it because it reminds me of every time I left on deployment, not knowing if it was the last goodbye to my wife and kids. God bless and Semper Fi, brother.
Semper Fi, James.
jpavlvs I love all you Boys~ always and forever. Love to each of you.
glad you made it back brother
i bet you have some stories my friend..
I will never forget the effect this song had on me. I heard it on the radio on my way back from dropping my husband off at the airport on his way to Viet Nam. I had to pull off the road & cry my eyes out. It still brings a lump to my throat to this day.
Love you Mary Travers! Will miss you. I saw y'all 5 times back in the '60's. You will always be the greatest trio we ever had.
Super Song, great!
MAY MARY TRAVERS REST IN PEACE
*may mary traverse in peace
When John Denver wrote and recorded this song it was under the title “Bebe I Hate to Go”. PPM heard the song and recorded it, but with the title “Leaving on a Jet Plane”. It went to #1 on the charts and was one of PPM biggest hits.
I thought Cass Elliot wrote this.
@@eddarby469No, she did not.
Great trio, so much feeling in their interpretations ... and, of course, I love Mary ... such a beautiful voice. Miss her ...
i luv this song. imho it's a billion times better than graham nash's mawkish "just a song before i go". i like some of Stephen Stills' songs and harmonies, and i luv his guitar talent, but i can do without the egos, spats, and nastiness of the late csny.
She had the voice of an angel. This sound brings tears to my eyes...
This song makes me cry every time I listen to it. It reminds me of my two brothers, both in the military. They sang this song to my family the day before they left for the first time. That was four years ago, and I still miss them so much I could cry for days. But I am still so proud of them... 😢
i salute them and all vets
I just left for PI when the song came out. Then for Nam a few months later. Semper Fi
oops already did this 1
sure do
Love it. My son graduated in May 2022 from The Air Force & got stationed (12) hrs away 😢 at Eglin AFB
I'm going to start using your brothers song & sing this each time he flies back to FL.
My grandma said "She'll never forget the stations playing this song on second day of Vietnam War, when we learned almost 1,000 of our troops died on the first day there." This song touched so many people during the Vietnam 💙 🫡
Every time I hear that song I cry I guess it's I miss the olden days and I'd love to travel 🧳 and see the world 🌎🌍
I once worked with Bill Seyferth, an acoustic guitarist who had played on some of PPM's recordings. He said that they were kind to him even though he was paid just $10 per hour, which was still more than he had earned as a Marine sergeant decades earlier, LOL.
❤
I was at a PPM concert. Mary was very ill then. she sat and sang the whole time. I knew it would be the last time I would hear Mary sing. It was an awesome concert. Anyway, my wife wanted to leave. I said I came here to hear them play Blowing In The Wind. I would not leave until they finished playing BITW and we stayed.
I had the privilege of seeing them from their beginning and all through the ages
Until Mary’s passing. Miss them
Was that in their final two years when she had oxygen and in a wheelchair?
@@dallascowboytouchdown4319 I don't think she was in a wheelchair and with an oxygen tank. But she sat in a chair but still her voice was strong.
I saw then ca 1986 in Lansing MI, my home town. They blew me away. Paul went to MSU so I figured they were happy to visit duet to see them live. I never dreamed as child I would ever hear and see them live. WOW! Consummate pros with pride...every note was perfect.
Absolutely magical I was singing it round the office all day it came to me so I played it on my phone timeless classic
Remembering Mary Travers born on November 9, 1936. She was an American singer-songwriter who was known for being in the famous 1960's folk trio Peter, Paul and Mary. Peter, Paul and Mary broke up in 1970, shortly after having their biggest UK hit, singer-songwriter John Denver's ballad "Leaving on a Jet Plane" (originally titled "Babe I Hate To Go") (UK No. 2, February 1970). Travers subsequently pursued a solo career and recorded five albums: Mary (1971), Morning Glory (1972), All My Choices (1973), Circles (1974) and It's in Everyone of Us (1978). - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Travers
All songs of Peter Paul and Mary bring back memories of childhood.
Beautiful song! I was 12 years old when i heard it ! 1967♡ the song its about our life ! Never Viet nam! Its about space and time and us !
I spent 22 Months and 20 days in the beautiful Southeast Asian country of Vietnam. Got there in 1967 and was home by June 1969. And I will tell you one thing for sure. You can leave that country but it will never leave you.😟
me too. sad bittersweet memories.
Mary Travers was so beautiful and delicate.
When you read her biography you'll find she was a very strong person with a beautiful voice.
When i first read that i thought it said delishous . .
Lucky to see PP&M live x3.
Thanks for this memory.
RIP Mary Travers.
this song makes my cry it gives so many memories
+Domanic Pouton _S#T And me !
I'll always miss you Mary. It's ironic that watching you perform this song makes me want to WATCH you perform this song--my point being that the ultimate metaphorical jet plane flight was you, through no choice of your own, distancing yourself from us by passing from cancer related causes in '09.
...BEYOND TIMELESS!!...Rest In Peace, Miss Travers...
Hi Mary (God my hold you in his hands) Peter and Paul - this song was played for me on a cassette recorder 1975 when I left on a jet plane from Germany to California from the Girl I loved back then. It was so moving and imagine now 2016 I have finally been able to re-connect with her. May God bless you all!
I was actually in Germany when I was 1, I wish I remembered it, my dad was driving a tank in the army and we were stationed there! We came back to the states only after 1 year there, but my dad still has the metals that he won for his squad while being there! We also are from California!
Al Le ..you are a lucky man !! Congrats ..
What am absolutely amazing voice Mary Travers had..and the songs...even though they were ten years or so before my era...still wonderful
This song make me cry
Best Version
Wow,Tears in my eyes, that was a great performance.
I was very young when this group were at their best . I love their songs , always will !
With thier last number 1 hit on billboard, I and my classmates enjoyed this in late December of 1969! We were seniors that year. Written by John Denver!
What a *Woman!* Absolutely *Spectacular!*
Left for Ft. Bragg Jan 1970...this song in my head...
I’ve always loved this song sung by PPM since 1969. I almost cry every time I listen to this song.
This one's for you Mike R I P
Wunderschön.
In summer '89, last holiday day in LA, on the way to LA International airport, this song was on air in the radio, and i was missing a higher output in this rented car. Some hour later, on a 747, this song was still in my mind.
Same i feel if i hear this song "LA International Airport."
Always feel emotional when i listen to this song.
Now the time has come to leave you, one more time let me kiss you. ❤️💚💜 beautiful song!
Love and miss you Mary. Happy Birthday in Folk Rock Heaven.
I remember this song when I was a child. I feel I could reclaim my past with friends and family. But they’re long gone and only memories.
My dad loved this song. Heartbroken after the divorce from my mom. He passed at age 53 in 1981. Love you dad
Life is so sad. They must have loved one another when they married, but things change, but of course their love for you did not change.
Thats sad..
What a voice Mary had.
Beautiful lyrics, which mean different things to different people 🙂
My sister loved her music,, sadly she passed away 3/22/21, I m tearing up just listening to this and thinking about her
was a big hit for them...did connect with everyone...we`ve all had to leave or had someone close leave....part of life made easier nowadays with mobile phones, transport, skype, social media etc...was horrendous years ago.
Peter, Paul and Mary: These people are my heroes.
heavens band they sadley passed all 3 love you guys .
2021 Rules forever 👍.
One of the most beautiful voices of any era
Loved their version also... Mary.... you sing the song emotionally..bravo.
When my husband left for Viet Nam, I collappsed at O'hara Airport! Woke up 2 days later! I hated the War, he came home but never the same! War is brutal to any relationship!
You're a very, very, most very good woman. Lucky husband.
I'd like to thank you, and your husband for your service to this country I call my home.
I’m so sorry. I really wish we could stop fighting each other and live in peace. Think of how far we would go as a civilization. How many positive things we could achieve.

This song will be etched in my brain for the rest of my life. It was playing on the radio when I was kissing my girlfriend goodbye waiting to board the train to take me to Basic Training. Damn I miss Mary Travers and for some strange reason my youth. LOL
