    As a kid watching hockey, I figured Sutter must be the most common last name in all of Canada because it seemed there was at least one Sutter in every team! 😊

    Rich and Ron played together in St. Louis while being coached by Brian

      Rich & Ronnie, on the same checking line was epic. Killed penalties like nobody else could.

    Great video honoring a great hockey family, really remarkable. Duane was a significant contributor to the Islanders four Cups. Not a Tonelli but he scored some big goals and here and there (including the infamous offside goal in the Cup winning game in 1980. Brent Sutter has his great year centering Mike Bossy. Not bad work if you can get it. In the '82 playoffs Duane and Brent teamed up with Bob Bourne who said of that line, which was very effective, "We're just a Western Canada kind of line". Thanks to Shannon for the video and thanks to John and Grace Sutter and Viking, Alberta for a truly remarkable contribution to the history of the NHL.

    Hi Shannon, thanks for the video on the Sutters. Wanted to let you know about a great book on them (if you haven't already heard about it) It's called Six Shooters by Dean Spiros. I'm sure it's still available if you check on line. I'm in St. louis and Brian was as tough as it gets and a great leader and Captain. I remember once where Brian and Daryl got into a fight on the ice as it was a tilt between the Blues & Blackhawks....Ah...I long for Old time Hockey! Anyway thanks so much check out the book if you care to. Cheers!

      Thanks for the book recommendation, I just ordered it off Amazon.
      Didn't realize how old it was. Apparently it was published way back in 1990.

    At one point, I believe in '91 or '92, we had Brian as the coach, and Rich & Ronnie playing on the same line together with the Blues. It was epic.

  • @LowLightMike

    When Rich was playing in Vancouver, they played a game against Philadephia with Ron. Craig Berube cross-checked Rich into the boards, in a scary play. I remember that Ron (Philly) jumped onto the ice to be next to his injured brother Rich (Canucks), and Ron skated off the ice with Rich's stretcher.

    Late seeing this video... spot on description of the Sutters, hard working, hard nosed. Not spectacular goal scorers but they held their own and defensively sound. I do remember one game.. 1986 maybe... Flyers were playing the Islanders and at one point, Brent, Duane, Rich and Ron were all on the ice at the same time. Almost have a fight break out until they realized who they were looking at... their brothers. Hostilities suddenly ended as they all skated away. Too funny!

    And the other Sutter Brothers bitter.

    THANK YOU SHANNON, I have wanted to see this video for a while. Being old l Iike you, I remember the Sutter's and watching games and saying "That's Brent, no Darryl, no Rich, I mean Ron..... and being wrong every time. Seems like there has always been a Sutter Brother in the NHL in some way as long as I've been watching hockey. Actually, I guess there has been.

  • @RoyalMela
    @RoyalMela 5 лет назад +5

    There was seven brothers. Oldest brother Gary, perhaps was the most gifted one, but instead of going to NHL, he stayed home and worked the farm they have in Alberta.
    OK, this was mentioned in the video too. Wrote this before the video was over.

    Also, by the way. The next video has got to be the 'Stasny Brothers'. Should be a smaller board. I don't remember as many of them.

      @Western Man Peter Stastny, Paul Stasny and I may be confused but I believe there was an Anton Stasny? However I could very easily be wrong. I am sure that someone in RUclipsLand will correct my mistake.

    • @exeter1985
      @exeter1985 5 лет назад

      @Western Man I just looked it up... I was almost close to being in the neighborhood. There were 3. Peter, Anton and Marian. I believe that they have sons and/or nephews who play or have played in the NHL?

    • @exeter1985
      @exeter1985 5 лет назад

      @Western Man I don't know if people would think so, but I certainly would enjoy it. I would also love to hear about one of the teams (I should have looked it up first) that were the first ones to go to a Communist Country and smuggle a player out of the country to play in the NHL. I know that there was quite the story there...

    • @petercasnocha5340
      @petercasnocha5340 5 лет назад +1

      Western Man well, there are actually four stastny brothers- Anton, Marian and Peter are famous, they fled to nhl...then there's oldest brother Vladimir- he played as well, he brought his other brothers to hockey as they all say, but after studies he stopped and to was a coach ( after revolution he was assistant coach at the Olympic Games in Lillehammer 94 then at WC in st. Petersburg 2000 (where we got silver) and Gothenburg 2002 ( which we won gold). Peters sons Paul and Yan also play hockey

    The Sutter brothers epitomized the "Chuck" Norris Division during the 80's. I miss those days. We actually missed Brian during the Stanley Cup run last season. Hockey was in their blood.

      I wore my #11 jersey (1979 home white) when I attended game 6 of the SCF. So he was kind of represented :)
      Side note: I was there way early, and when walking past the video booths I saw Mr. Federko walking the other way. I shouted "Hi Bernie" and waved like an idiot fan. He nodded politely, looking busy, and walking on. I didn't want to pester the man more than I had saying Hi so I'm walking on too.
      As he walked past me he must of noticed the jersey of his old linemate Brian. I heard "Alright" turned to see him smiling with a laugh, and giving a friendly gesture.
      I smiled and laughed too, and walked on happy to be alive in that moment.

  • @sdgakatbk
    @sdgakatbk 5 лет назад +3

    I know this isn't your thing, but if they are still alive, some interviews with their parents could prove interesting.
    The Sutters totally deserve their own video, but there are possibilities for some hockey family videos. It could be of different generations or brothers. There are those across generations where players from both generations made it, (like the Hulls and the Howes), and ones where one did make and one didn't make it or hasn't yet. As to a brothers series, of course there's the Richards, the Stastnys, and the Hunters among others.

    Hi Shannon great to hear about the sutter brothers after you have mentioned them so much lol and I'm really keen to more about other hockey family's and their careers!! I had actually thought of a list of things that I was curious about like highest scoring family or the different generations of the longest serving families like this family played the most games/years or goals and other fun but curious things even the worst but most drafted family i.e. Had 1 star player and the rest got drafted but were busts? Just things I'm interested in knowing about! Finally I always love the history of the game things you do so keep them up 👍🏻

    Brent Sutter won 2 out of the 4 Stanley Cups with the New York Islanders, and he also has 3 Canada Cup World Titles. Brent Sutter should be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. 1,111 Games Played, 363 Goals, 466 Assists, 829 Points.

    Everyone talking about how as a group they barely edge out Gretzky's pt total, but even as a family the Sutter's don't have as many cup rings as H. Richard, Beliveau, or Provost do individually. Really put's the quality of that series of MTL squads in perspective.

    HG - Duane had an injury in 80-81 that kept him out of the lineup for a while. Some sort of knee thing I think.

    • @RIUUI007
      @RIUUI007 10 месяцев назад

      Duane missed most of 1980-81 with damaged ligaments in his right knee, an injury he suffered on November 11 vs. Minnesota. The injury required surgery and his next game back wasn't until March 20.
      He then also missed the end of the 1980-81 season and start of the 1981 playoffs with a dislocated right shoulder, an injury he suffered on April 2, 1981 vs. the Rangers. His first game back wasn't until April 20.
      The shoulder injury required another surgery during the summer of 1981.
      Rough season for Duane.

They had SIX. that seems like the odds would be impossible to give birth to 6 men who all played in the NHL...and all belonged. Wasnt like 4 could play and 2 got in just because of their name. They all showed they could play. Wasnt anything like Wayne and Brent
    you could have 6 doctors before 6 very good hockey players

    Kinda related question? Why can't it be Beagle to be in trade/waiver wire discussions instead of Brandon Sutter.
    He's looking OK right now clean bill of health could have a good camp!
    Sutter > Beagle
    Sutter > Schaller
    You gotta see it this way right?
    So Sutter and Gaudette are in and Beagle and Schaller are out.
    Beagle, 13th man.
    Schaller, 1st call up from Utica.
    Hey HG, ..... it's relevant!
    Brandon Sutter is a "legitimate" Sutter, a good one.
    Maybe playing in a much stronger lineup helps him stay healthy
