I just purchased this exact guitar (3/9/2020) - after playing 21 guitars, 3 different shops, 4 different brands - It Sounds & Plays Phenomenal. I was blown-away. The Sustain is endless.
Thank you Chris, nice review.
I have a Taylor 414ce-R v class and 2017 martin D18 w/ forward shifted braising.
414 sounds really nice. It pleases my ears and makes me feel good, no uneasy feeling.
I don’t know what it is, but it does. I like D18 also when I play “take me home country road.”
Thank you for your review. I just purchased a 414ce special edition in the UK. I was not fully satisfied with the tone when I first played it due to reduced low end projection hence I tried replacing the strings and bridge pins. I replaced the strings with D'Addario E26 and installed Taylor plastic bridge pins instead. In my opinion, plastic bridge pins play a role in transmitting the string vibration towards the top wood and it is an effective and low cost trial that a guitar player will be able to explore. I am now a happy owner of a Taylor 414ce rosewood special edition.
Man, its great to see the V desing hit the 414 models, no i have no excuses to get one!! thanks for the demo. Hope you guys can make a side by side comp. between the normal model and this one.
If we can get our hands on an X model we will. We are sold out right now of the older model. The V braced 414ce is really stunning and a great value. Since you have no excuses let me ship you this one. ;) - Chris McKee
Awesome guitar, I’m sold and I’ll be calling to order a 414ce-R in the next week!
I bought this guitar today in Glasgow. Tried an 814 and a 314 as well. Thanks Chris for all your videos which helped me choose.
The sound is wonderful and it looks spectacular.
I will buy that model too...but want ask about guitar bar action... it's little high...will make big difference in sound if little down? Thanks
I bought one, a special edition blond. It had a terrible buzz when I got it. Adjusted the truss rod and now I love it. It's a great little guitar.
Hey theres a limited edition at my local guitar center I'm seriously considering buying. Does it sound loud and full unplugged? The majority of my playing is just pure acoustics, no mic, appreciate any info.
I have found the volume unplugged very good. I little louder than my Ovation. I have played it a couple of times at a jam circle with several other musicians and find it plenty loud with my amp turned down. To me, it has very good high notes and good sustain. The bass is good, too. Overall, a very nice guitar and I seem to like it more and more as I get used to it. It's pretty, too. Of course, I would recommend that you play it at your guitar center to make your own determination if it's loud enough for you. GOOD LUCK!!
Got one of these coming in tomorrow I’m soooo excited. Need to go by and visit y’all in San Antonio I’m in Houston
Always enjoy hearing you play bud. I’m still hoping to pick up a Taylor one of these days.
I played a 414ce-R v-class yesterday at a local store. It sounded very bright and balanced with light strumming. But when I dug in with a flatpick, it didn't give back. I A-B'd a GC-MMV and a HD-28 right after to compare. Unlike the 414ce-R, I could feel the sound in my chest when I drove the MMV and the HD-28. The Taylor topped out and had nothing to give when I challenged it. It felt almost brittle. That is a definite deal breaker. Weird, because I had expected strong volume per everything I'd read.
finger-picking it did pretty decent but when I got down flatpicking Bluegrass it did not move me at all
Trying to compare Martin dreadnoughts in the area of flat-picking to a GA is apples to oranges--especially an HD-28.
I would agree. If you are a Heavy Strummer - it might not be the best choice? I play soft/medium, ( both flat-picking, strumming & fingerpicking ) so it's Perfect for me. Very Dynamic, endless sustain & easy to play. The Action is Incredible, with Zero Fret Buzz.
I like the special edition . It has the edge burst top I believe they call it . Theres a black out special thats being sold in the northeast area that has black edging instead of the white and around the hole . The tuning keys are also satin black and the fret board is like a dark charcoal color . I was told its an exclusive special edition made for one specific distributor . I'm surprised Alamo doesn't have rights to this being such a big taylor distributor .
Great review, very helpful and really nice playing.. cheers!
Picking up one of these beauty's on Sunday. Can't wait its only Thursday now haha
Great demo as usual. Im waiting for one of these to arrive in my local store and hope it's up to par . Saying that cos i tried a 724koa , which everyone says is awesome, and frankly it wasn't. Maybe my ears aren't up to scratch anymore! We'll see
Great review Chris. Great explanation. I went to one of the Taylor Roadshows with high hopes of this new bracing blowing me away. While it is truly a more refined Taylor sound it didn’t wow me. It may be cause I am stuck on the fuller sound that the x braced guitars give. I asked them if they planned on phasing out the x braced guitars and got kind of a mixed response. It sounded like they were moving that way but they were leaving the door open if they got too much pushback. Interested to hear the V Bracing on a 816 or GO or an 810.
Thank you once again for showing us what the Taylor 414ce-RV is all about, is there an option to include an arm rest on this model? Thanks again.
thanks a lot for your great review. and the nice playing. i love the part from minute 9:00 to 10:15... i tried it but cant get it sound like you.. it would be so nice if you can make a tab from this or a little video about it.. :)
Song at 8:58 ? And great sounding guitar that V-Class is something else.
Cam Repasky it’s range is so dynamic and Overton’s almost sound in tune 😂

Awesome review man! Thanks ;-)
what song is that 10:21
Great review I hope to purchase one someday
Thinking of buying a 12-string, just to have some more room on the neck...
These are really the best videos that come from a store. Still advertising in there, of course. Every 2018 video is so long on V-Bracing praise... buyer's opinions are mixed, some would like the X bracing back, saying the new bracing is weaker. Personally, I'd prefer the more harmonious overtones, but if the top has a greater chance to crack, its a tough drawback. I haven't chosen which guitar I want to get yet. I do like the sound of the 324 or 327 over the 414, even if in some cases I might want to eq up the treble. The 12 string version only seems to be available as a narrow waisted 362 instead - did they not make a 12 string dread? The octave strings could fend for themselves either way, I'm sure ;D
@@gettyshiloh thanks for the reply!
I've since decided on a 517 builder's ed. The funny thing is, I can't currently get to it, due to the Covid fraud... That is seriously annoying, as I only have a mediocre sounding carbon guitar to play on... (advertised as impervious to the elements - but even though its just hanging in an air-conditioned room, the neck actually developed a hump at the 9th fret. So much for carbon...
I am trying this out...
I really enjoyed the video Chris, but I'm scratching my head after playing some of these V-Class Taylor's. It seems the X brace may sound a little fuller after playing each one in a acoustic guitar room.I will need to play several more before I decide on a V-Class......[ Taylor guitar owner for over 30 years)!!!!
hey there, i have a Fender CD140-SCE, the question i've got is this:
should i buy a 412ce-r v class or a 414ce-r v class? The Fender is a dread with a solid top. So for Strumming and picking it should fit well, but for fingerstyle it jsut doesnt feel good.
The 414 is an alrounder and way above the fender (in price and ((maybe)) in sound aswell -.- ) but the 412 would open up another way of playing.
So what is your opinion on this (veteran players your opinion is asked aswell :D )?
Thank you, Very helpful.
What happens when i have all my songs in Open D? What adjustments have to be done to the guitar?
I dont know wich one to buy because of this thing of changing to gauge 13, touching truss.
I am purely strummer, no fingerstyle at all.
Am very confused, and frustrated.
These cost 3000 usd in Sweden. That I'm even considering it as someone working hours is a testament to the tone of these guitars.
Order one from Germany then, there's a 414ce V (not R) for 2109 euro at Kirstein.de
In regards to 'R' versions - which usually *should* be Rosewood models, that seems to not be the case anymore in Europe, they mostly seem to have Palisander for sides and bottoms in music store descriptions now - must be new import regulations, I think.
@@Pharesm Palisander is name for Rosewood in some EU languages.
What is the difference between the 414 versus the 814? Is there any change in sound or is it all just fancier add-ons?
Any chance there's a tab or sheet music for that rendition of Amazing Grace?
I think the new V class sounds better when played gently, but quickly gets overwhelmed and overdriven when strummed too hard. I don’t think they are for everyone or every style.
I had that exact impression when I played it.
So basically it is a dream fingerstyle guitar. For strum, stick with your Martin
Should I trade my 214ce for the 414cer and give $1000? Is it worth the upgrade?
Is it possible to order this guitar with no electronics?
Would a big pickguard change the sound of a guitar?
I bought a 414ce r, and in comparison with my 214ce, the 214ce is so much louder, is this normal ? Solid wood guitar are less ressonating ? Can in the futur the 414 match the same amount in volume of the 214? And if yes how long does it takes ? Thank you so much
Hmmm well actually a solid wood guitar should resonate more. is the guitar playing well asides from the fact that it is not as loud?
Yes, it has a more equilibrated sound with more harmonics and richer overtones, but way less loud. How many months can we espect the wood to open more in general? Thanks
Solid wood guitars should get louder over time, however many times the volume increase will be very slight. There are other tricks you can do to increase a guitars acoustic volume, but each guitar is a different case. I would recommend visiting or calling a local luthier and ask what for recommendations (:
What is the difference between this and the 814?
414ce-r v class or the 416ce-r???
Are these guitars loud and full sounding without mic's and being plugged in?
Last night at a jam session, a fellow who's a great musician, wanted to show me a lick on my guitar (he had his fiddle). I handed it to him and he told me to plug it in. I have a 5 watt tube amp. But I handed him a pick and he strummed it and said Never mind, this thing is loud! FWIW
@@jmchessor thanks brother!
Is this close to 814ce?
Ive heard its a 814ce v class without the bling and cheaper. But i am also curious as to how similar they are.
The better "grades" of spruce and rosewood are used on the upper end guitars as well as bracing tweaks and other subtle and not so subtle differences.
814 has better (more expensive) tuners, a little thinner, yet better finish. Nicer figure to the tone woods, and maybe a little more time doing finish work inside. I looked at an 816 for a year, inspected closely. I love my new 414ce R custom. It is stunning and plays like a third hand. The first Taylor I ever touched was a 414ce deluxe, washed away all my dreams of a shiny new D18. A year later, I have a lifetime guitar. Someday, I’ll get the 816e too.
Song at 10:28?? :o
04/26/2021: I tried buying this guitar two times from Guitar Center at $2,600.00 each. The first guitar came to my home, and when I opened the case it had numerous wood grain marks across the grain, which Taylor calls bear claws. It looked like a cat used the top for a scratch pad, plus the wood grain from top to bottom was wavey and not straight. So, I complained and sent it back. I was promised by Guitar Center Corporate salesman that he would make sure the next guitar they send me (same model) would have no bear claws snd straight grain. Nope, it was not as bad as the first, but $2,600.00, it had the bear claws and wavey grain pattern. Yup, it looked cheap. So, it sent it back. I have looked at many other brand guitars at this same price point, and I will never buy another Taylor. Besides, I am not convinced Taylor's V-bracing is as good as they market it to be. So, I will stay with traditional X-bracing. Right now I am considering the Martin and Gibson guitars at similar or less cost than the Taylor.
So I was thinking of getting this over the Ovangkol version. Is this a good guitar for jazz/prog metal?? I haven’t played it or anything. I hope it’s good.
silverdragon0000120 I think rosewood has a more separated tone with the spruce. Highs and lows more pronounced with less mid. Ovangkol seems to be a more even tone balance with more mids. But the rosewood has more flavor to me
Didn’t know Paul Giamatti sold guitars. He plays beautifully too.
Getting 1 of these guitars in about 2 years. Once I get some bills payed down.
I just order mines after returning a 214Ce K. It’s arriving tomorrow morning. Looking forward to the 414Ce R! Did you get yours? It’s been two years since your comment
@daniel Hartman
@@gustavopaulette3496 I have the 214 and considering upgrading to the 414. Did you get yours and were you happy with the decision? It's been a year since your comment 😂
This is a $2600 guitar
Claire Redfield yep made in USA the right way. That costs money
Well yeah.
Wonder how it compares to the hand built Japan made A5R?
@@Tigerex966 puts it to shame... sorry, I love yamahas too. Still play my FG730S, but my Taylor kills the Yamaha. I had a really good LL16, still not a Taylor
V Bracing is terrible. Andy Powers is ruining Taylor guitars.
