  • Tip-Top from Taylor? Taylor's 414CE now has V-Class bracing. Ben Morgan-Brown checks it out.
Taylor launched its new V-Class bracing at the US NAMM Show in 2018 with a flurry of claims about what it would do to enhance performance. Some of them were quite easy to understand - improved sustain, greater volume and the like, while others such as improved intonation, were a bit more puzzling until you looked a little more deeply into what bracing is and what it does. Most reviewers were very positive about V-Class and certainly Taylor counts it a success - so much so that the company is now rolling it out the new design across its large range. It had begun life gracing just the top models. For more details, visit www.acousticreview.co.uk

I purchased a 414ce-R in March 2020 after playing almost 20 guitars and 4 different brands. It's amazing for fingerpicking - too.

This is the best review of a guitar I’ve ever seen on RUclips. Thanks for describing what is very difficult to describe; tone, dynamic range, intonation, etc. Nobody else seems to be able to do this, like describing colors. Plus you play very well. Kudos.

I did the Taylor BOGO deal just before Christmas and picked up a 114ce and GS Mini. The 114 is like a whole different instrument from any acoustic guitar I've ever played. It's so good that it's hard to explain. I got $400 for the GS Mini, I have no clue why everyone likes that one so much? There's absolutely nothing special about it. It's like a big 6 string ukulele!

I've played quite a few Taylors and the 400 series is by far my favorite, you can't go wrong with Ovankol or Rosewood.

04/26/2021: I tried buying this guitar two times from Guitar Center at $2,600.00 each. The first guitar came to my home, and when I opened the case it had numerous wood grain marks across the grain, which Taylor calls bear claws. It looked like a cat used the top for a scratch pad, plus the wood grain from top to bottom was wavey and not straight. So, I complained and sent it back. I was promised by Guitar Center Corporate salesman that he would make sure the next guitar they send me (same model) would have no bear claws snd straight grain. Nope, it was not as bad as the first, but $2,600.00, it had the bear claws and wavey grain pattern. Yup, it looked cheap. So, it sent it back. I have looked at many other brand guitars at this same price point, and I will never buy another Taylor. Besides, I am not convinced Taylor's V-bracing is as good as they market it to be. So, I will stay with traditional X-bracing. Right now I am considering the Martin and Gibson guitars at similar or less cost than the Taylor.

Great review. This guitar sounds fabulous. I have a Martin all-solid ovangkol and it is so well-balanced. With a spruce top it might be even better. Never really think of getting a Taylor as they generally sound too bright for my ears - but this sounds full and resonant. The description of it as sounding 'fat' stood out for me - exactly what I want. I think I might be persuaded.

How well they sound when plugged?
The best electronics to reproduced the acoustic sound to a PA system is the AP5 pro from Maton.
The most important thing for me is how well isvthe sound plugged into an amp and then PA system.
I like the sound of Taylor, but Maton guitars are said to reproduce exactly what you hear acoustically outside a PA.
I tried Taylor guitars at the shop, didnt tried yet maton guitar.
Really confused, cant make up my mind 😖

with all due respect to taylor guitars and their quality build, one characteristic seems to run through all models and that is they have an almost compressed sound and the acoustic volume seems restrained or even slightly choked. The have a lively tone but i`m not sure they do it for me and i have played a few new ones and never purchased even though I would have liked to. Perhaps the 416ce would impress me more

I was thinking of getting this guitar. Would you recommend it for prog metal/jazz types of playing? They don’t have them in my are and only had the old 2017 with x bracing for $2000 USD the new ones with v bracing cost $2400 USD and with tax cost $2640 USD. This would be my first acoustic guitar. I play a mayones 7 string but wanted an acoustic. Thanks a lot :D

How is the NUT WIDTH for us people with smaller fingers? That is a big big big deal for many many many people The Mitchell guitar which is more cheaper yet sounds great plays so fucking easy with it's small 1.69 Nut Width what a joy it is to play a guitar that is so easy to play, it makes you feel your a good guitar player- So i heard this guitar is good with the Nut Width too ?

    • @josephmilwee5603

I used to prefer a smaller nut and slimmer necks, once I got used to 1.75" I couldn't go back to anything smaller. I played 50's "C" style Gibson necks for years and Taylors feel better and faster

I’m surprised how expensive this is. Compared to the Furch Red+ you reviewed the Taylor falls a long way behind in tone, sustain and character. To me it sounds very ‘tinny’ and lacking in depth or warmth.

Hi Henry - I do try to review the guitars from a positive viewpoint if I can but I also try to point out anything I'm not so happy with - it's a tricky balance as some things I might not like personally aren't necessarily wrong, they're just not to my taste, but I'll take your comments on board - Ben
