Raptor Review - Cedar Point (Sandusky, Ohio) B&M Inverted Roller Coaster

  • One of the coasters I was really looking to revisit this year was Raptor. If you’ve followed my channel for awhile, I’ve mentioned in the past my disdain for this inverted roller coaster by B&M. Not that I always thought that Raptor was a bad ride, but I had my reasons for disliking this attraction. Well, after my third visit to Cedar Point this year, I finally snagged a ride on Raptor, and can properly review this classic inverted coaster...guys, this coaster is 26 years old…

    I think Raptor is a bit overrated, but I still enjoy it. I agree that final transition into the brake run is brutal if you don't brace yourself for it.

    This is the textbook strong invert. When I think of what a good invert should be, I always think of Raptor as a perfect representation of a strong invert! I don’t like it more than Banshee, but it’s something I really enjoy riding!

    I marathoned this at closing time on Memorial Day 2019. My brother and I stayed in the back row 4-5 laps. The operators let us stay there as long as no one is was line for our row. The mid course was off. It was completely nuts. We had Cedar Point hangover the next day.

    I was blown away by Raptor. It really surprised me. Very good layout. Intense positive Gs, whippy inversions, and of course my favorite part, that double helix. That double helix at the end is not only my favorite part on the ride but my favorite element on any B&M Invert. I grayed out so hard, I can't even keep a straight face for the camera right after it. Very smooth Invert to imo. Amazing job B&M.

    CP homeparker here. I've never had that problem with the restraints. In fact, I've always felt that Raptor's harnesses were a bit loose one me (I'm also fairly thin though), so I always get that outta-control feeling on the ride. I personally love Raptor's first drop - even though it's only 45 degrees, I love the way it whips to side right off of the pre-drop, then levels out into that heavy, straightforward acceleration. It's my favorite drop on an invert. It's intense alright - not quite Afterburn-level intense, but definitely one of the more forceful coasters at Cedar Point. That helix is a true wow moment though. And yeah, the cobra roll and final turn are both pretty janky. I don't mind the cobra roll as much since the restraints don't bug me like they do to some, but that final turn really slams you hard - I'm always bracing myself for that last swoop, and for first time riders it can be an uncomfortably jarring moment. What Raptor does best is being fast-paced, whippy, compact, and forceful. The way it's designed, I can kinda understand how having those things would be at the expense of smoothness - because of the tight space Raptor takes up, most of the transitions are sharp and the ride's goal is really to pack as much as it can into a restricted space (which it does really well). And side-note: some of the best operations in the park. Raptor ride-ops are almost always dispatching trains in under a minute. My personal score is an 8/10. Here's how I rank it against the other B&M inverts I've ridden:
    1. Montu
    2. Afterburn
    *3. Raptor*
    4. Banshee
    5. Great Bear
    6. Dragon Challenge (both are tied for me)
    7. Talon
    8. Batman - Magic Mountain
    9. Batman - Great Adventure
    10. Alpengeist

      Interesting ranking. Not the order I would put them, but respectable :)

  • @mitchellries256
    @mitchellries256 3 года назад +2

    For me it's the 6th best invert I've ridden behind the former Dragon Challenge Chinese Fireball and Hungarian Horntail at 5th and 4th respectively, Banshee at Kings Island at 3rd, Montu at Busch Gardens Tampa at 2nd and Alpengeist at Busch Gardens Williamsburg at 1st. It used to be my 2nd least favorite just ahead of Silver Bullet at Knott's Berry Farm after riding it in 2015 but I liked it alot more after riding it twice in 2017. Speaking of Silver Bullet, I'd like to try that again. My legs felt weird when I got off but other than that it was a perfectly smooth ride.

    My back row ride on Raptor this year was easily one of the worst rides on any coaster I've done. I never had a problem with roughness on it until now, but every element had tons of headbanging/jackhammering and the last turn was brutal.

  • @Paolo8772
    @Paolo8772 3 года назад +3

    Raptor isn't the longest or fastest B&M invert, (any more) but it's very intense, especially in any of the seats in the back row. Not just that: I think it's possible that Raptor has the longest ride duration of any B&M invert from disengagement from the lift hill chain to entering the brake run. Thanks for posting!

    I totally agree. My relationship with Raptor is complicated. This year's rides were pretty good. I think I'm also getting better at managing the restraints. That entrance into the brake run is brutal. I don't know how they botched that so badly. It was my least favorite B&M invert, but this year's rides had me move it into the middle of the pack.

I remember sitting on the breakrun with my head up against the restraints feeling like I just escaped hell. Luckily I had Ibuprofen. It could’ve been the half empty trains or the fact that we were in the back but I’ll try to give it another chance next year.

    That sucks that you’ve had uncomfortable experiences with Raptor’s restraints. I never have, so I’ve always found riding Raptor to be highly enjoyable (it’s probably my #3 at CP, honestly) and free of head-banging. If anything, what you said about ‘fighting the restraints’ would accurately describe my challenges with most of B&M’s newer models with the vest restraints. Just goes to show how unique each rider’s experiences are to them.

    • @XscreamThrills

      @@XscreamThrills I get what you mean; the old restraints are rigidly fixed in place. I usually still have a little room when they're locked, though. (Perhaps I'm a little shorter than you?) With the vests, I feel like I have to choose between having some give in the shoulder area or keeping the lap section from clamping down on my legs, lol.

    Fun ride, great invert, but I was kinda underwhelmed with the 2nd half. A little overrated imo. The corkscrews weren’t that whippy, and the double helix wasnt that forceful. My favorite part of the ride was the zero roll, I grayed out at the bottom going into the cobra roll. It’s still fun enough to be in my top 20. I still much prefer great bear and volcano TBC. I have ridden almost 200 coasters but had my strangest experience on Raptor. I went to Cedar Point for the first time in 2019 and Raptor was the first coaster i went on. I sat in the seat and right away I noticed the over the should bar would not come down on me. The ride ops said I was TOO TALL to go on. I am 6'3" so it's not a freakish height. What happened is I waited for the next train to enter and there was one seat on the whole train designed for people over 6 feet tall. I rode it and it was fine. I've been on 5 other B&M inverts and never had that problem. I rode every other coaster at Cedar Point without any problems and I know that Top Thrill Dragster has a height limit.

    I personally don't understand how you could dislike this ride. Sure it may be a bit rough at some points but it's honestly not that bad. I'm 5'4' so I don't know how the restraints truly are, but the sheer intensity and craziness of the ride makes it either number 5 or 6 at Cedar Point for me. The coaster it's competing with is Magnum.

    To modify a phrase from Peter at Theme Park Crazy, you can never go wrong with a B&M invert. Raptor is fantastic. I actually prefer the Batman model personally but this one is still super good. My personal favorite B&M invert is Alpengeist but only if you're in the front row. Otherwise it's too rough. But Raptor is a lot of fun and it has such a great presence on the midway.
