Is Steel Vengeance Overrated? (Cedar Point) Sandusky, Ohio

  • How dare I even suggest that Steel Vengeance is overrated! Since this roller coaster opened in 2018, it has taken the entire coaster community by storm. The reviews have ranged from amazing to ultra extreme unicorns. Sure, there have been a few naysayers, but we all assume they’re just trolling the coaster nerds on social media, while secretly worshiping the shrine they made to SteVe in their closet.
    Well, now that I’ve been riding this roller coaster for 3 years, I thought it would be fun to revisit this glorified attraction and see if it still ranks as high as I originally had it.

    I only have 50 creds, so disclaimer there, but I loved Steve. However between the 4 headliners at the park I dont know if it's the clear winner for me. I loved all 4 for different reasons. I can say that SteVe is maybe technically the best coaster, I just don't know if it's my clear favorite if that makes sense. Maverick has the whip and variety, Millie has the speed and grace, and TTD has that launch.

    I must say that I would give the presentation a 10/10 for the following reason: the encapsulated queue. I stood in line for two hours on Saturday, October, 17. The line almost hit the midway when I stood in line to ride SteVe for the first time. As we walked through the structure of the ride, I loved seeing the trains zoom by every few seconds. However, I was in shock and close to tears as I walked out of the structure to see a full 360° view of the magnificent coaster. I never got bored in my two hours other than when we re-entered the structure near the end of the queue. Just because there isn’t much theming, does not mean that the presentation of the ride is anything less than a 10/10. The queue is basically a shrine to itself. I love your videos! Keep up the great work

    I just rode SteVe for the first time a month ago in the back row for my first ride ever and I couldn't believe how amazing it was. I got 3 rides on it and every one of them were equally as great. I don't know how this ride could ever be considered "bad" to anybody. The airtime was amazing, the inversions were fun, the ride is long, and it's ridiculously smooth! I don't think any coaster is going to top this ride for me any time soon.

    I think it is overrated. In my personal experience, I got badly stapled and it ran slower than I expected, resulting in more floater than ejector. It’s still my #4 overall, but lots of people say it’s #1 in the world, and I can’t agree with that given the experiences I’ve had

      That really sucks... I have ridden it quite a bit and all of the times I got ample airtime room during peak summer and I went flying on every little hill. I got airtime coming out of the zero g roll on the shallow wave turn and basically every little drop. Hopefully you can get a proper ride on it.

    Having CP for a homepark, and having grown up with all the other CP coasters for my whole life, I can say I was skeptical when SteVe was announced. I knew the stats would be insane (it's CP, they've gotta break every freakin' record there is) and the layout looked crazy. When CoasterStudios dropped his opening day review, I was kinda like, "Ehh...sounds a bit like first-time jitters." Finally getting around to riding it, I learned never to judge a coaster simply from its stats and layout. SteVe absolutely HAULS throughout the entire layout, the airtime is literally non-stop, it can be disorienting at times, and it's different enough from the other CP coasters to feel unique and like a good fit for the park. I described it as like the real-life version of those ridiculous coasters you would see on cartoon shows. It feels like it fits perfectly into Frontiertown - you almost forget that Mean Streak was even there. And the best part is that there is no bad row on it - even the middle rows are just as powerful as the front and back ones. My only issue with SteVe is that I DON'T think it's the most re-ridable coaster (at least, certainly not at CP) just because of how disorienting it is and how heavy the forces are. In 2019, I tried marathoning it - by the end of the day, I felt DEAD. It is my favorite roller coaster currently out of 145 I've ridden (it dethroned El Toro for my number one), and it's hard to think of what could possibly top it (I did Fury 325 for the first time in 2019, and it was a close call but I think I still like SteVe more).

    • @nathanshackelford7812
      @nathanshackelford7812 3 года назад

      @Patrick Cadiz RMCs like SteVe don’t really staple you in my experience. They are all relatively new rides and the trains, seats, and restraints are comfortable. It’s a snug fit that you almost want given the crazy airtime and forces. The ride I got on stapled on at Cedar Point was Magnum Xl. Terribly. Which was sad because i had never ridden Magnum before and I was shocked as to how awesome it is other than the uncomfortable trains and restraints.

    I was able to ride steel vengeance back in early October for my birthday for the first time. And i was blown away! The massive structure, the way it was running, the atmosphere, etc. It was such an amazing experience! Over two days I was able to get 3 rides: Middle, Back row, and a near back row ride at night! That first back row ride was one of the most amazing experiences I had on a coaster. It knocked down my number 1 (El Toro) and officially became my number 1 coaster. @THE AVERAGE BEAR Yes, this coaster is very fun, almost everybody enjoys it. And there isn't a huge difference between a couple points in intensity rating, that's true, but if you watch coaster videos regularly, you'd know that we are very nit picky and precise about rankings. 9 intensity is almost perfect while 8 & 7 intensity are great. It's just little things like that, you kinda get used to it lol. And a lot of other people rate this coaster very highly. Like top 3 out of hundreds of coasters they've ridden, highly. I can see the hype causing disappointment with SV, which is why I like that you're honest about what it does and doesn't do. I like that it doesn't have the intensity level of something like Skyrush or i305. SV is at that perfect sweet spot. I also think that the disgusting, money-grabbing locker policy and the huge lines this can draw can take away from the enjoyment of the ride for some people. Given the amount of hype surrounding Steel Vengeance, it’s difficult to not call it overrated. I agree with most of your scores. On intensity, I would probably give it a 7.5, when I think of an extremely intense ride, a 10-Skyrush or the original Riverside Cyclone, for example-I don’t think S.V. Is remotely close to that. It’s a hell of a lot of fun, though. Because of lower capacity and somewhat questionable operations, however, the wait for it can be a slog.

    • @DanielCollinsBachata
      @DanielCollinsBachata 2 года назад

      Having ridden those two coaster to which you compared SV, I'm not sure I fully agree that SV is much less intense. I think part of what makes SV so intense is it's so long. It's really a marathon of a ride. Riverside Cyclone had a few moments of high intensity, whether in the form of sharp pops of air or some strong laterals. The majority paced very slow though. Skyrush is also very intense, but last like half the time of SV.
      I also slammed into the sides of the train on SV many times over the course of the ride from the sudden laterals like on the "stall," hill before the MCBR, and one random hill with a hidden slight curve in the last 1/3 of the ride. I think it definitely doesn't have the positives like I305, maybe the airtime isn't quite as strong and the pacing not quite as fast as Skyrush, but it achieves its intensity in other ways then sustains it for so long.

      @@DanielCollinsBachata I was surprised by the relatively mild first drop on S.V. It certainly gets the train up to speed, but it’s not one of the best first drops I’ve felt. S.V. Is great up through the drop after the midcourse brake, and then I think it gets repetitive. Although it may have the most airtime of any coaster, I would describe the air as more floater than ejector. Skyrush’s air is strong ejector.

Personally I prefer more intense coasters like Top Thrill Dragster and I305 because I like air time but positive G forces are better in my opinion. So it really depends which type of rides you like, long air time machines, positive G Force in short periods, inversions or speed.

    I think that it's right on the line between overrated and underrated. It really is one of the #1 coasters yet to be rideable. But showering praise and overrhyping certain qualities can really get people's expectations too high. I think Coaster Studio's first ride reaction is an example of overhyping. But if you look at this video. You don't overhype it. You give real reasons why it's the best.

    For those of us that have, we all know how fantastic this ride is, and a back seat ride is legendary.
    For those enthusiasts who haven't made it to cedar point recently, there's no way this coaster can live up to the unrealistic expectations the coaster community has laid on it.

    I've only ridden it twice while I've ridden the coasters I rank above it at least 10 times (so not necessarily a fair comparison) but Steel Vengence is not my #1. Seeing people that more than doubble my credit count ranking it as their #1 makes me say "yes it is definately overrated". Currently, my #1 is a small gravity group coaster in Florida that I think will still be the best coaster in Florida come 2022. That said it was only a few weeks old when I rode it and I've heard it's gotten rough since so my opinion may change when I ride it again in a few years (after COVID is over I will be going down for Iron Gwazi and I won't skip riding my #1 coaster again nearby when I do). That said I heard similar statements about roughness from people who picked up the credit within a month of when I did (notably, Coaster Studios) who I think confused roughness and intensity.

He said no, and I disobeyed and was amazed by the incredible intensity, airtime, and hangtime on Mine Blower and was so glad I disobeyed. I try to look past that but it's possible it embelishes the experience. And it was the first time I disobeyed my parents after having been mocked for being a goody-2-shoes for years. The answer to this question really depends on what you take to be the overall consensus opinion about Steel Vengeance. I'd say it isn't overrated because I think the general opinion is that it is amazing and arguably the best coaster on earth. There are people who think it is exponentially better than any other coaster and I'd say those people overrate the ride but I think they are outliers.
    I think it's the best coaster in North America (as I can't speak about any other continent) but I wouldn't call it perfect. But being the best coaster in North America is extremely high praise. To me, the biggest problem is that the queue is pretty boring. It's certainly not the most boring queue out there and it's one of the better queues in the park. But this is why I personally prefer theme parks over amusement parks. All else being equal, I'd rather have a fun immersive queue line than one that just has you walking around waiting your turn. That's especially true for rides that make you wait 2 hours in the standby line. Does that make the coaster bad? Of course not. But it is a flaw that deserves to be mentioned.
