  • Handyguy Paul fixes his water tank in a GE Refrigerator purchased in 2005. The water tank developed a slow leak which was running down the back of the refrigerator and creating a puddle at the bottom. You can find GE water tank assemblies here: amzn.to/2pJGI2J

My water tank was leaking inside the refrigerator. I located and watched this short video about a week ago. Paul made it look way to easy. I ordered the part which came today... I did just as Paul did in the video and had mine replaced in about 45 minutes, from beginning to end. Paul, "Thank you very much!"

Perfect. Literally PERFECT. My fridge model is almost identical and it is seriously like this video was custom-made for me from start to finish. I watched once, ordered the part on Amazon and fixed it without a glitch. Thank you so much for taking the time to make and post this, saved me time and money without a doubt. Interesting to see that so many others experienced the same problems of water dispenser freeze-up and water tank leak (and I believe it happens in that order, as Dominic surmised, water pressure causing a tank blow-out). Obviously a design flaw. Hair dryer trick for (from another video) worked for thawing out water dispenser, but a little paranoid about drinking weed whacker water (solution from other video) until I can verify that it is probably made of the same material of any other plastic vessel or tubing that we drink from. Again, BIG THANKS!!!!!

Thanks a lot. I have looked all over internet to connect the dots for filter and these rest of the water tank mechanism and finally you clarified my doubt. so this water tank has nothing to do with ice making department. I'm newbie to these DIY activities. but your videos are really excellent explanations with clear demonstrations, Please keep up the good work. I really appreciate your time and effort on putting these valuable videos on youtube.

Video was great. I picked up the part at a local appliance parts store for $29.00. They are around the same price on Amazon, but it takes several days to get it and up to $12.00 for 1 day shipping. Thanks for taking the time to publish. Saved me some headaches.

Just did the repair. Could not have gone any smoother. THANK YOU for this fantastic video. This video is a master class in absolutely nailing a perfect DIY How To video. Thorough with just the right amount of detail, different camera angles to clearly show each step, no nonsense chatter. If only every DIY video on RUclips was created this thoughtfully with the viewer's experience in mind. You even included the Amazon link for this exact part. Bravo. Bravo.

Thanks a lot. I first noticed a slight delay in water coming out of the dispenser. I suspected an air bubble caused by a leak, and sure enough 2 weeks later the delay was long, and water pooled on the floor when I dispensed water. I pulled the unit out and took off the access panel and sure enough, a leak in the shorter tubing. With your video, it was easy to replace the whole tank system for only $30. I could not have replaced this without you..

Best Video. i didn't change my tank. hoses were broken. this video showed everything. i replaced the hoses. i had copper tubing laying around, using dremel tool and splitting disks i made tube smaller and forced into hoses, wrapped it with Stretch and Seal Self Fusing Silicone Tape. no leaks, water dispenser working. yes i changed water filter ended up cleaning fridge and freezer too.

My ice maker still works but the water dispenser line keeps freezing. I was about to purchase a new refrigerator but decided to check RUclips first and came across your video. I already removed everything then defrosted the unit once and that fixed it for about a day when the line froze back up. Watching your video I’ll try the back of the door defrost method this time and if that doesn't work I can replace the dispenser line just from the which your video showed the connector in the front that leads to the water dispenser. If that doesn’t work then the next purchase is the French Door unit with the Craft ice maker. Secretly I’m hoping that won’t work so I can at least tell the wife I tried - LOL. Thanks a bunch for the video.

Mine also started leaking at 6 years old. I've never posted a comment on youtube but have used it so often I thought I should start contributing. GREAT instructional video Paul. Thank You! The only small things I would add when doing mine is that a pretty good amount of water leaked out of my tank onto the floor when I disconnected the hose in the front (so have something ready to catch it with) and secondly, my old tank had some small white rubber bands that my new tank didn't come with. I put them on the new tank because I think they help hold the hoses in place when you run them through the refrigerator holes. Thanks again.

This is correct. The line in, which is loose behind the fridge, leads into the water filter before heading down to the water inlet valve to be distributed to the water dispenser and ice maker.

Thanks, Handyguy! Just fixed my fridge for only $30 with your awesome video. I think the tank blew out because the dispenser pipe kept freezing up and I guess the water pressure in the tank increased when trying to get it to run? Used the hairdryer and weed whacker line trick to fix that, then the new tank, and I'm celebrating with a frosty beverage. Great walk-through.

Great video, well done! Thanks! If you tape a feed wire on to the long hose before removal, you can just pull the new long tube back the way it came from the front as you feed the new tubes/tank into their respective holes. No need to fish around and find the new tube later.

Thanks for an excellent video. My model was a little different but the process was essentially the same. Replaced mine in about 30 minutes - only wish I had taken a photo before I started so I would have remembered exactly how to route the shielded electrical cable up to the light. I usually always take a photo before I start removing things - got in a rush and forgot today.

Thanks for the great video...fixed mine quickly and easily with your help. Again, much appreciated. For those of you that still have no water after fixing a leaky tank, you may have a frozen line in the freezer door...contained behind the water dispenser unit. Simply injecting hot water up that line, and finally...water coming out again. Hopefully the problem doesn't persist. Regards.

A very useful video for those of us with GE side-by-side fridges with water dispensers. Our problem was a water leak that started overnight on the floor under our 15-year old GE Profile refrigerator. Replacing the water tank along with the two plastic tubes as shown here fixed it. Looking at the one that failed showed numerous little cracks in the longer tube that had developed over the 15 year life of the fridge, from which water eventually leaked. Not a good design. This plastic tube was always going to fail over time, and it’s just dangling below the fridge. GE, how about warning customers ahead of time so their hardwood floors aren’t damaged by leaking water?

This was very helpful. Another video provided excellent instructions however failed to show that there was an insert on the short tube that has to be removed prior to inserting it into the compression fitting on the back of the refrigerator. If you don't remove the insert, it makes sense that you will not get any water to the dispenser! Thanks Handyguy Paul!

I don't have the same fridge as in the video but helps me understand more of why the one have has a water line bundled up on the bottom inside of the fridge. I would love to have a water tank like yours inside of seeing a bundle of water line. this will help me to at least replace the water line for the water coming out of it taste like plastic even after a brand new filter.

Good question. If my memory is correct, the water input enters the filter first then comes back out of the fridge and down to the valve which branches out to the ice maker and the water dispenser. I could be wrong though but I remember having the same question myself and figuring it out while I was behind the unit.

I just removed the tank and made a jumper so no water tank. All it does is cool the water before it comes out of the fridge. I put about 30ft of extra hose coiled up behind the crispers. It cools the water, and I have ice if I want it colder anyway, and if the hose gets old and brittle again I just pull a little more hose thru and good to go in about 5 minutes.

Great instructions with couple comments: 1) One may need a new water valve part WR57X10070. The teeth that hold the plastic tube in place when tube is inserted is probably destrolled as they get dislodged when tube is pulled out. I found this out the hard way and had to replace it even if it was electrically OK 2) Strongly suggest that the tank is filled as best you can before installing it as without water it will go on a "Hydraulic Lock" and will have difficulty filling after one is done. Other than that good instructions.

TIP: If the water dispenser is STILL NOT WORKING AFTER YOU REPLACE the tank, take a hair dryer on hot heat to the back of the panel on the freezer side (below the "ice tunnel") for about 5-7 minutes and within an hour or so the line should unfreeze and start working again. This solved my own issue. Very poor insulation on the water line GE!
P.S. Now if I can just upgrade the girlfriends side of the family to ones who don't feel the need to open both fridge and freezer and stare at the food for minutes at a time (which has caused the frozen water line on three occasions now), I'll be set. :)

THANK YOU for this video! So, our problem is moldy tasting water, and I want to change the supply lines as internet research shows is often a solution. I know that the lines you replace in your video are part of the exchange, but my question is this: to change the line for the actual dispenser, do we have to take the unit out of the door? And I'm assuming the supply hose at the wall as well as down in the basement would also need to be changed? Would that cover the entire loop?

    @sperkins921 11 лет назад

As an aside, could we say disconnect the filter, and empty the tank, fill it with bleach water and run that through the fridge a few times? That is assuming that the issue is the internal supply lines and not the lines going to the wall or from the main water supply, which at this point I don't know for sure. If no water is getting to tank, then I would focus on water supply and the valve in back.

What you can also do is completely bypass the water cooler and never have to replace it again. All you have to do is cut both lines at the cooler, pull them back through the underside of the fridge, dispose of the line that went between the cooler and the actuator and then cut the feed line coming from the freezer door to the correct length (will be about 2 feet too long) and push it into the actuator. The groundwater normally isn't that warm and you barely notice a difference in the water temperature coming out the freezer so bypassing the water cooler in the fridge entirely doesn't hurt anyting

4:29 My problem is the tube going from the tank to the water dispenser is rotted. Especially where it curves like in your picture. Are the tubes PERMANENTLY attached to the tank? I see your new tank comes with tubes. Do I have to buy a new tank? Or do they detach from it somehow.

great video... the only thing I did not see you do was remove the front long tube on the refigerator.. everything else was great. by the was the item number for that GE part is #WR17X11440, cost around $18 to $22.00, depending on were you live in the country..

    Hi there, great video!
I was wondering if you had a solution for the front coupling leaking a little bit after replacing the water tank? Thank you 🙏
