- Start by washing the tires off with warm soapy water. Make sure the runoff doesn't go into the lake. Mark and drill four holes around the tire, with an equal distance between each, and bolt together using 2" zinc-plated or galvanized hardware.
Next, drill the holes for your rope to pass through. Begin in the centre and work your way outside, again making sure that they're an equal distance apart. Be sure to drill big enough for your rope to pass through.
Estimate the amount of rope you need by running it back and forth over the top of each hole. Once you've determined the amount, cut, singe, and knot your rope before starting on the inside and working out.
TIP: Make the holes a little bigger than the rope size to help it from fraying while passing it back and forth through each hole.
Once one side is complete, cut a new piece of rope, and weave it over and under your first one to create the mesh effect.
Make sure to drain any stagnant water from the inside of the tires after rainfall.

Hello there, Cottage Life. Great craftmanship! Could you tell me what kind of drill bit did you use?
Which rope did u use to make it and how much is it needed?
Around the fire or in the fire? ^^
how do you remove the water if it collects in the tire
you could drill a few more holes for drainage when you drill the holes for the bolts
Put a small amount of water inside the tyre, then drill holes in the middle of where it collects, do it for each tyre, should let most of the water through if kept level.
What kind of drill bit did you use? Planning on making these for my classroom
Drill weeping holes to prevent water build up
where
@THE CULTURE LENS on the bottom side of each tire. Just past the tread. Probably do several on each. 1/4-3/8"
I have tired to drill holes in tires for other DIY projects but have had problems running into the steel bands in the tire and ruining drills bits and not having a nice hole. How did you not have this issue?
Hi Nikki, I used a multi purpose drill bit can go through metal and reamed the hole out so it was big enough to fit the rope though!
Very cool indeed
this is very nice maybe going to try this. Any tips?
Maybe use some big washers to keep the rope and knot from pulling thou tire...
i would use a padded cushion with a hard bottom on the top of tires, that way you can remove the cushions for storage.
@@gailbarton3308 grommets would be cheaper than washers.
Drill holes so stagnant water doesn't collect in the tire and watch out for creepy crawlies living in there.
Best advice ,
Do not create insect habitats!
