For teaching a handicapped student - I've used a method to take a very wide damp brush and load the brush with three or more colors. For example to create a blended sky: On the pallet, dobble blue, white, pink, yellow - run the brush across all the "blobs' at one time to pick up all the pigments. With the blue aimed at the top of the painting brush horizontally back and forth until all 3 - 4 colors are laid on the canvas - the back an forth motion blends them. this was very effective because all the paints were wet at the same time and rewarding to the student.

I have spent 9 hours, NINE HOURS ( 4am-1:20pm) searching for a video on blending and such. Every SINGLE VIDEO I watched was either " blending is so overrated", " ditch the blending and learn to overlap" and so on. Every single video I watched either had something negative to say about blending or completely irrelevant but was labeled as "blending acrylic paints" When I came to your video, I was literally about to give up. I watched the first couple of minutes of it and I was on the edge of my seat!
I don't paint. I have very little experience in the painting stuff unless it's color/paint by number or the random "touchup" to my door frames and even those are sad to look at.
Your video helped me so much and now, I am finding things in my house to paint. Thank you so much! You earned my "like" a million times and more and you have a new subscriber! You're Awesome!! Please make more videos like this!!

I want to say thank you for hanging in until you found what you needed. Awesome, I'm actually taking a BEGINNER art class and the instructor said to do a wash of color for the background. Of course everyone painted their background... she didn't say what a wash was! Then she told me to blend my sky, but didn't tell me how.. grrr, thank you so much for this! The blending techniques, the half step of color, and of course wiping your brush, I kept adding paint and made a mess of blob on my brush! Will never forget this lesson!

I've only recently started learning to paint with oils. But I've been watching a ton of short acrylic speed paint videos. I always kept thinking to myself that I wouldn't want to paint with acrylics because it looked like the blending process was a pain. This video makes me want to give acrylics a try even more. Because I get frustrated when painting with oils how sometimes I just want to easily paint over a surface but have difficulty getting crisp or fine lines working on top of wet paint. I enjoyed this. Good tips. Thank you. The sponge blending is my favorite. You can get a neat effect for a background by putting a three or four different colors just on the edges of a slightly damp sponge and then swirling. It works best if the colors are not touching each other for the first use. After that it doesn't matter that much. I've done a couple backgrounds that way.

Thank you so much. This video is so helpful. I have decided to have a go with acrylics this year after spending a couple of years learning about watercolour.

Hi Cinnamon, this is wonderful not only for beginners but for seasoned artists who need a refresher on blending! I am wondering what you think about using soft makeup brushes for blending?

Thanks Sherpa! This is the very thing I'm trying to figure out so I can do a pic based upon Bob Ross' Crimson Tide tutorial. I need a way to put Alizerin red and Phtalo Blue down on black gesso that keeps them blendable so I can make sunset clouds over a beach scene.

is there a way to paint over something and do blending if the painting dried and it was not blended correctly?

    • @TheArtSherpa
      @TheArtSherpa  4 года назад +15

Yes, just paint over with the original color blend and redo it. That is the beauty of acrylic, you can paint over it and redo.💜💜

Adding so much water to heavy body paint,
can really, effect the final result!
Adding too much water often makes artist/premium grade paint
look more like craft or student grade paint in the end.
It can look like a paint with varying or uneven pigment load,
or one with a higher amount of filler.
And that’s a shame, after paying top dollar.
    Wouldn’t it be better,
to use a soft body acrylic-
if you want the paint to be thinner
(move more easily over the canvas or painting surface)?
I’m thinking heavy body acrylic paint-
is more fitting for impasto work, or where/when
you need the paint to hold shape, be stiffer.
You actually want that lower viscosity.
I’m thinking that if you have to add water, **to get it to move the way you want**,
    it’s the wrong paint.
However, if the paint is **drying too fast**, then using a tiny amount of water (or medium) can help.
So adding water regularly to thin =
    wrong paint.
(Adding water regularly to cream or
half and half = wrong dairy. It just means what you actually want is whole, 2%, 1%, etc.)
The stiffer heavy body paint definitely has it’s occasions,
but it seems like for a lot of general paintings/usage,
soft body or more fluid forms might work better for many common paintings,
because usually nothing is added to change the consistency (unless for purposefulful effect such as a glaze, etc.),
thus the paint is being used, as designed.
Choosing the best fitting paint in this respect,
could also broaden the choices of brushes to use.
    Wiith heavy body paint,
brush choices are (best) limited to
    firm, or extra firm.
If you don’t use the firm/firmest brushes w/hb,
then you have to use ..even more water,
    making it worse again.
Soft/er brushes can create subtlety different effects,
    and allow different degrees of control of the paint;
    a different painting experience.
The (most likely) limitation with brushes-that more than half of all brushes
are best not used w/hb paint
seems a shame for those who use it mostly or only.
    Maybe especially for beginning artists,
    but any artists really.
    It’s a limitation that’s probably unnecessary,
in that it doesn’t apply to the other paints.
    Would it sometimes,
    or even often/generally
(depending on the artist and project)
be better to choose a soft body acrylic,
or even a fluid acrylic in the first place?

If you are not planning to change up techniques where heavy body is nessisary I would think it could be. PS this was a thoroughly thought out and thoughtful comment !! Thank you
