    This theme song does some strange things to me, just as it did when Red Dwarf was still aired: you know it's a comedy but the spacey spirit of the music gives you the feeling of wanting to be a part of an adventure bigger than yourself. Anyway it reminds me I'm still one proud Dutch smeghead.

    And for all these years, believing I was the only one who loved this theme song, kept playing it over and over again by rewinding the old VHS, to find there are others who recognize its brilliance is awesome! It only aired here in the Ununited States on PBS every Saturday night from 10 p.m. to 10:30. God, how I used to love Saturday nights. Best show ever.

    Its 9 o'clock on a Friday night in 1993, I'm 14 years old and the week of school is finally at an end. Tomorrow morning, a lie in followed by the Chart Show on the 14" hand-me-down B&W Pye telly in my bedroom, but right now it's 30 minutes of absolutely cacking myself laughing at the surreal exploits of Lister, Rimmer, Cat, Kryten & Holly. Loved RD, there will never be another comedy like it again.

    fun bit of trivia: it was discovered apparently only recently that the synth noise at 1:54 is actually someone (I'm guessing Howard Goodall because that would make the most sense) saying "Red Dwarf" over and over again through a vocoder (an instrument that basically makes your voice sound all electronic)

    I used to get to stay up late when red dwarf was on, I used to love cat and Cryton because I was a kid lol. But I think as an adult the relationship between lister and Rimmer is the most interesting. It is almost symbolic of the class division in the UK.
    Although I think lister trying to free Cryton from is servitude is also a really interesting concept. For a 90’s comedy show, considering the humanity of a robot with AI is pretty ahead of it’s time lol

    The lead-up to the chorus is a nick from a Bowie song (not one of my favorites, but I know it) called, appropriately enough, _Loving The Alien_. Not surprised at all that any of the Red Dwarf team are Bowie fans!

    • @MALONEYCAMFIELD
      @MALONEYCAMFIELD 8 лет назад +2

      Loving the Alien isn't one of many people's favourites. It's from his mid'80s trough (the so-called Phil Collins years) which has been largely written out of Bowie's career. Interestingly, there was an edition of Celebrity Pointless on TV recently and there were visual clues to five David Bowie singles. Loving the Alien was the lowest scorer of the five tracks (only four from a hundred people knew it). The others were Starman (unsurprisingly the highest), Diamond Dogs, Cat People and The Laughing Gnome.

      @snowbelle74 8 лет назад

      +Matt Maloney I liked it

    • @MALONEYCAMFIELD
      @MALONEYCAMFIELD 8 лет назад

      Bowie actually considered Loving the Alien to be one of his 15 best songs according to a compilation album he released in 2008. However, he was well known to dislike the production on it and when he performed it live in later years, he did it completely differently.

    • @murielsartre
      @murielsartre 8 лет назад +1

      Yes, that's exactly my problem with it; the production was the worst sort of 80s bombast and had way too much synth action going on. And the outro went on seemingly _forever_!
      I'll have to listen to another version of the song. I did get a warm fuzzy when I recognized it in this piece, though.

    • @MALONEYCAMFIELD
      @MALONEYCAMFIELD 8 лет назад +1

      "the outro went on seemingly forever!" The single version was actually considerably shorter (under five minutes as opposed to over seven). Bowie may not have been a prog-rocker but he did have an occasional propensity for the epic.

    "I'm all alone, more or less," remains one of the greatest lines ever written in a song (yes, I'm being ever-so-slightly hyperbolic).
    It's a completely throwaway line, but at the same time utterly absurd while also being deeply profound, given the context of the show and Lister's situation.
