  • The Fuji X100V is the latest and greatest in a long line of cameras loved by street photographers. Fuji added a ton of new and updated features to the V but here are the six things that make this camera stand out for me!
    Turns out I have a bit of a history with the X100 series of cameras...
    I started my street photography journey with a Fuji X100S way back in 2013. I loved its retro vibe and in spite of some period-specific limitations I got some amazing shots that really inspired me to keep shooting.
    I got great results with the X100T and when the X100F came out I took it to Havana for a week of shooting and produced some of my best work EVER! There’s just something about these little cameras that perfectly fits the way I shoot.
    Fast forward a few years and here we are with the X100V. Countless features have been added or refined to make sure this new camera is the ultimate evolution of the original X100 design.
    TIMESTAMPS:
    0:00 Intro
    1:15 They fixed the ISO dial.
    2:17 It's weather resistant, baby!
    3:40 That all-new Fujicron lens.
    4:06 Color images.
    4:55 A little better LCD but...
    5:58 The hybrid viewfinder is everything.
    6:53 Monochrome, monochrome, monochrome.
    7:55 Black and white images.
    8:45 What is the X100 magic?

    I love my X100V for three big reasons: portability, weather resistant, and it's just fun to use.

    I'll bet you these things will become a genuine classic.

      So funny... most cameras will do about the same thing in about the same way. But there's just something about the X100 series that really makes it click for my street work. I think I'm going to have to accept that there'll always be another X100 just around the corner! :)

    Just finished this video and realized you just posted it and it was the first video in quite a while! Glad you're getting back at it! This video caught me just at the time when I was about to buy the X-Pro3 + 35 f1.4 that I've had as a rental for the last couple of weeks. Kinda love it and I'm about ready to part with my Leica for it. But you've made me 2nd guess myself. I used to have an X100V but the viewfinder died within the first year. Still, it's maybe the best camera I ever had.

    • @karledwards

      I haven't shot with the X-Pro3 yet but it's on my radar... How do you find working with the (slightly weird) flip-out LCD? Is that even an issue?

    • @TheLiamGordon
      @TheLiamGordon 2 года назад

      @@karledwards it’s not really an issue if you’re an eye to the viewfinder person. I quite enjoy the flip down aspect for certain scenarios. But I am in general a hater of the screen. It’s borderline gimmicky and I’d rather the x100v screen. But it’s implemented quite well and the camera as a whole is satisfying to shoot with. I was pleasantly surprised.

    • @karledwards
      @karledwards  2 года назад +1

      @@TheLiamGordon Ya, I always thought I'd spend half my time fiddling with that screen - especially if it wasn't a lock tight fit when closed. I'd have been all over the XP3 if it had a normal screen. But then I would have probably sold it and just gotten another X100. It's a pattern with me! LOL!

    Two thumbs on this video. Thank you. Just got my x100v last week and really, really like it. I've had an x100t for years and really like that too. The weather resistance, flip screen and other improvements made this worth the upgrade for me. Also, after 2 years with my Leica Q2, I sold it last month. Never really connected with it. Too heavy and, I too, feel uncomfortable walking around with such and expensive, albeit amazingly engineered, camera. Also, I don't need 47 mp.

    • @karledwards

      Thanks Alan! I hear you on the Q2... They have amazing build quality and a lovely lens but I have never connected with any Q series camera the way I connect with my trusty little X100(s,t,f or v!)
      That being said - the Q2 reporter edition is pretty frikkin' sexy! LOL!

    I've had the X100V for almost a year and I am still stunned what great street photography I can create with it. I runned around with a Canon R6 + RF 24-70 2.8 when I was a beginner but after picking up something light and compact as a X100V and trying it out on the streets I realised that this anonymous little camera just got what I need to make good images without scaring people of with a big piece of gear.

    I just found your review and really enjoy it, however i also just found your photography and “ oh Man” your images are awesome as well, i totally agree with your monochrome assessment and love their ACROS simulation. Im a big fan of my Leica’s but i too freak out about the cost in the field and now going back to Fuji- they are both great systems- the only issue i have with Fuji and the X100V is that its back ordered everywhere. At some point i should be able to find one- anyways thanks again and glad i found you

      Thanks Francisco!! It feels great to be producing videos again! Just working on ideas for the next video. Thinking I'm going to talk about how I shoot zone focus with the X100V. There's a couple tricks with the way Fuji handles manual focus so could be interesting... :)

    • @franciscosalas6779
      @franciscosalas6779 2 года назад

      @@karledwards yes! As an x100v user my self, that would be helpful. I’m a zone focus shooter (with the M) and I’ve tried to do it on the V but simply can’t make it work. That focus scale I think is kinda confusing. The focal length is actually a 23 but the dof scale I think is based on a true 35mm ff lens. Have you noticed that? The 23 has way more dof than a 35, but they keep showing the 35 dof not the actual for a 23

    • @karledwards
      @karledwards  2 года назад +1

      @@franciscosalas6779 Yup! That's definitely one of the issues... But stop giving away the content for my next video! LOL!!
      Nothing beats the pure intuitive beauty of zone focusing with a Leica M (or other rangefinder) but the X100 series can still do it. Just have to jump through a few hoops...

    Hi. Great vid saw the one on Havana too. I was wondering sorry if I missed it but I think you said you have all the x100s? So is the x100v your go to camera now instead of the x100f? Would you say that the x100f was still a good buy secondhand? Interested in your thoughts. Thanks again Matt

    • @karledwards
      @karledwards  2 года назад

      Hi Matt. I've shot with every X100 except the original. I think I'm a fanboy!
      The F is still a good camera but it's impossible to say whether it's a good buy. Really depends on price and your needs. For me the improved the EVF and updated lens design on the V make it the obvious choice.

    No tactile feedback on shutter release is my biggest gripe. Aperture dance annoys me too, as does the lack of distance scale on the lens. Although you can set it so the distance scale is in the viewfinder. Love the Picture in Picture feature that complements the ovf. In all A great little camera.

    • @karledwards
      @karledwards  2 года назад +1

      Hey Steve! I hear what you're saying there... But on my copy of the X100V (at least) the actual button has a pretty snappy feel that gives me "just" enough feedback to know when the shutter has been fired.
      To be honest though, I'd take a leaf shutter with a "softer feel" any day. But I shoot a bit of flash and being able to sync at pretty much any shutter speed comes in super handy!

    I've had the X100V for quite a while now, after having had a Leica, XPro, etc but I still can't seem to find reasons to take it with me when I head out. I think the main limitation is the fixed lens. The sensor doesn't bother me at all but if I'm just heading out and want a camera with me I find I already have my iPhone 13Pro in my pocket and it has more features than the Fuji. Sorry not sorry but if someone can convince to take the Fuji and spare battery with me PLEASE do so! I'm hanging on to it with the continued hope that I find a great reason to use it...kinda like my iPad. I have other things that can already do the job to my satisfaction.

    I'm with you on the viewfinder. I love looking through the glass. For me it's Iike looking through a window at the whole world whereas looking at a screen is like looking in a window into a room. I have the 100V and my wife inherited my 100T. Last month I bought our nine year old grandson a 100T. We've been shooting together since he was three or four and this is his first 'grown up' camera. I bought the 100s because they have that 60s retro vibe, a digital camera that works like my Olympus OM10 35mm. Already he feels free to use the camera as he wants. It doesn't intimidate him. This camera will teach him the basics and principles of photography.
    Personally I don't need flipout screens, touchscreen technology nor video, but appreciate that many in our broad church of photography will. I think the 100 is a truly amazing little camera that teaches us that we don't need a bag full of the latest gear. We all just need a more than capable camera and an eye to see the shot we want to.capture.
