- In this episode we try out our new Ryobi Plunge Router.
This is Ryobi's 1600W router model RRT1600-S
It has a 6.35mm and 12.7mm collet capacity so is very flexible in what cutters you can use.

About time someone behaved normal and just told us what we want, I’m a builder and You’re good at this, thanks
G'day Shaun, just bought Ryobi 1600W Plunge Router and read the instructions and needed some more information about this router. You were very helpful in showing this tool. Thanks again, God bless and have a great day. Cheers Chris
Thank you!!! Just got one of these and the instructions were crap. Your video is SUPERB. Thanks again. 😎👍
Especially wirh hardwood its advisable to protect your lungs as well
Gidday Shaun,
I bought one of these routers about a year and a half ago and like yourself I wish I'd bought one years ago.
Have to agree with you regarding the instructions, especially with the pictures not being that detailed and no text to support them.
One thing that stood out for me, was setting the plunge depth gauge on the side, this took a bit of mucking around to get the gauge setttings to correlate with actual depth of cut.
I work a lot with plywoods and this thing is perfect for cutting housing joints and edgings with minimal/no tear-out.
Thanks for a really great video.
Thank you ! I learned something and you helped me select my first router.
Glad you found it helpful!
ryobi manual should mention your video ^^ thanks, so usefull
16:58 If you set the pivot point 280mm from the cutter, the diameter of the circle is 560mm. 280mm is the radius ;-)
Great video - thanks for posting. The roller wheel is for thin board where the larger guide is to low to run along the edge. I too found it quite hard to change bits. I took the Perspex screen off and it made it a lot easier
That makes sense, thanks for the info!
To remove a bit stuck in the collet, I normally just tap the side of the bit with something, such as the spanner. You might need to tap it on a few different sides. The shock of the tap will often free it. Be very careful of course to not tap on the blades of the bit!
I did wonder if the wheel was to guide the router around curved shapes, but I don't think that would work. I've only had mine a couple of weeks and haven't tried anything with that yet.
The mystery screws are to hold in the vacuum attachment. The (terrible) instructions indicate you also attach the metal plate when you do that, but it seems to work well without the metal plate, and the metal plate stops you being able to see what you're cutting.
Damn I was hoping you'd have the answers to the mysterious wheel! Great, informative video, though. Thanks :)
The wheel is used on the jig Gide when making circle cuts to help reduce friction. But in truth it’s really just the perfect answer to a none existing problem so don’t bother to use it.
Hey mate, I have owned one of these for a while, when cutting circles, I usually cut two. the first one is a template (have to make sure your happy with it) with the hole in the centre and then use that and a flush trim bit and clamps to dial in the workpiece. If you find you are constantly working with the same diameteres, then having them as templates, means you do not have to keep using the fiddly circle cutting guide in the box.
That's a great idea! Thanks for sharing, I'll use that in the future.
Thanks for that! Make life easier by just cutting a shallow grove, cut on the 'fat' side of that with a jigsaw then clean the edge with a Trim Router bit.
THANK YOU, this is so helpful. There were a few bits in the box that I couldn't figure out the purpose of - you demonstrated beautifully! There is small rectangular metal plate - you pushed it aside at the start (2'43")... looks like it is meant to go between the black plastic base plate and the metal base plate - looks to me like it would just make it much harder to change the bit. Have you fitted it since making this video? Any idea why Ryobi would want you to fit that (or not have it fitted out of the box?) Their manual is a bit useless.
🎉 Thanks for the great video. I've just brought it but how far in fo you put the cutting blade that came with it.
Trying to figure out how to get the full 55mm depth out of it..
Turns out I had to buy a 50mm bit to get the 55mm depth. Standards bits are too short
You might want to ease up on pushing the router through a heavy cut like the flush trim on the edge.. if you go too hard and put enough stress on the bit, it'll bend, then go bang. Take multiple passes and your bits will last a while.
Thanks for the feedback. Still learning the tool so any feedback is much appreciated.
It's a pity the manuals are like manuals in the 1920s. Using half inch bits you need to use slow speed. high speed is for quarter bits. wish you found the answer to the magic wheel.😊
