Nissan Almera 1.0 Turbo Genting Test Drive - Can It Go Up in Under 5 minutes? | YS Khong Driving

- Here you go, folks - our first drive up the mountain in the Nissan Almera 1.0 Turbo.
Bear in mind the engine has been downsized to a 1.0 litre from the previous 1.5 litre, and the tall gearing is maintained for fuel efficiency. However, the CVT has a new feature, i.e. simulated ratios that give it a semblance of a conventional automatic, so the rubber band effect is reduced.
Notwithstanding that the car is actually a family sedan made for day to day motoring with excellent fuel efficiency, we, being typical Malaysian, naturally want to know if it can still climb the mountain.

Yup..Real Car Guys, which YS is; can and will find the positives in any car.
yup, that's true
Uncle Ys is a person who can drive well and still own an avanza. Truely practical guy, not just buy any sports car just to look you are car guy
Indeed
@@jijisuka2708 why buy sports cars when people sponsor you sports cars xD uncle YS is living the life
when uncle was silent, then you know that he is serious about it. big respect for you
I noticed that too.
Test drove this car in Sitiawan. My son drove while I sat at the back. From the passenger's point of view. 1. Very quiet 2. Plenty of head and leg room, I am 6ft. 3. Comfortable, not bumpy even on uneven road. 4. No feel of vibration from the 3cyl engine. 5. Very quiet cvt even upon hard accleration. On the whole a 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍car.
I live in Venice, near you...I am 200 cm tall, Mat Salleh...considering this Almera now, or Ativa, City hatchback, Vios...can not stay in my Subaru XV because they abondoned us here in Seri Mangung!
@@kennethleelathom739 interested to know which car did you went for?
I bought Passat 2.0HL after your review and now booked this car for my sister. Very genuine review...thank you Boss
This 3 cylinder Almera is even quieter than my City 2017..impressive!!
Have to agree with you. I thought sound prob so i turn on the highest volume then wow.... So quiet
@@ckleow1989 Same
Yea quieter than my Jazz too
Thank u Fr the sharing sir.. Am looking Fr this kind of car upon reaching my retirement..
turbo engin is quite than normal NA engine.
You can see he's enjoying the car's dynamics. The smile, silent moments, body shift when cornering, and finished it off with rally pace notes. More videos like this please, sir.
Got my VLT last month after heavily considering the City. No regrets whatsoever. The car is a breeze to drive with great features whereas the new City looked quite dated. On an aesthetic note, the Almera looks gorgeous. Now with this video, Im more aware what its capable off, thanks uncle!
You are most welcome.
Couldn't agree more.
After 2 years, how the car’s performance now? Any major/minor problem?
I owned this for 8mos now. Hows urs holding up for 3 yrs now
Uncle nie kaki kanjo genting. Semua coner dia tibai dgn tenang..
Uncle ni 5 times malaysian rally champion. 30 years experience in automotive industry..
So, the conclusion is balanced. The engine is well balanced with its chassis, making for a smooth fast driving & cornering.
Already tested, sport mode turbo really kick in. Wise choice than other competitors.
I bought one this turbo Nissan almera for my wife bcoz his sporty design but his engine more impressive. God job Nissan.
Your video never gets old for me. I am from the philippines and this review is the reason why i chose the almera. Owned it now for 8 months now. Enjoying evey minute of it. Keep driving like a champ uncle❤
Great to hear!
This Almera looked so relaxed and smooth. The NVH is pretty good too. An ideal city car from Nissan this time round, and AEB as standard equipment is a bonus. Nice relaxing drive this time round sir!
Much quieter than the overhyped vios.
@@awigta4 you sure? Did you test drive Vios or just talking stories?
@Awie shuki test drove Vios grs, but the cabin is still quiet which NVH is pretty good too. Both Vios and Almera are quite good. But there is lack of spec that Almera don’t get. Almera doesn’t get AndroidAuto, Emergency Stop Signal and Lane Departure Warning. Besides, Almera gets LED Headlamps, 360 degree camera, Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Cross Traffic Alert came only for full spec while the rest of the variants lacks. Also, Almera cvt is also could be question on quality. While Vios does gets BSM, RCTA, 360 degree camera, AEB, Lane Departure Warning for three variants like Grs, G and E except for J variant. Even all variants for Vios does gets Emergency Stop Signal and LED Headlamps. Vios also quite smooth in the long run that uses their own cvt.
@@jasminechin8656 I'm compare it based on Ys khong's vios genting run. Check that video and compare the loudness of the engine with this video. But normal people don't drive fast like ys khong so vios is a quiet car of course.
I'm talking about hard driving. Pedal all the way to the floor.
Regardless of what people say..i love my almera..in fact i like it even more than the new vios my family own
Closing to the roundabout at the top, 10:20 onwards it's 150+km/h similar to the impressive ativa drive up.
It's a delight to watch the drive uncle YS, already watched this 7 times already (ads included).
Great! Learnt something new. The way Mr Khong handles the car you know he's a bona fide race car driver. Looks like he was having fun. :)
wow, it take corner like a champ.. soo stable
Man..i really wanna go for a ride with this guy...
I know rite
Im planing to buy Nissan Almera
Great review sir and a big Respect to you sir
Thank you sir for the Review 💐👍🏼🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Got an adrenaline rush from watching this 👍
dia relik2 jaa...kita fuhhh hahahaha
So smooth, the car not even dragged itself going uphill! The 1.0L Turbo engine is the best buy for those can't afford the expensive hybrid or EV!
Nissan 1.0 turbo is a good car better than city . Its a fact
Really love the rally pace note at the end. Always enjoy watching your video uncle, keep it up!
Hahaha, it was just for fun, sharing what little experiences. Thanks!
Why only now youtube shows me this channel?? Clearly your channel deserve more subscriber.
Hahaha, please subscribe and share with your friends.
Yes finally the Almera! Can't wait!
Finally the genting hill climbing video for the new Nissan Almera 😍
Finally after the long wait since the first impression video of nissan almera from uncle❤️
15:40 Certainly entertained me with those pace notes out of nowhere!
Great, maybe we can pacenote all.
So nice to see a rally driver running uphill. Left 3 right 5.... Smooth
RM20 Roadtax for one year, that's a freaking steal 👍👍👍
This is my fav car and i wish i can buy it because i like they design and power delivery is so nice
Dear uncle YS. I have been watching your videos during pandemic and I’m a huge fan of you know. Hope you can review the Toyota 86. One of my favourite cars and not much review with information like how you do in RUclips. Thank you and keep doing this fantabulous review as you always do. ❤️
Hi Saktish, we already have 2 videos on the Toyota 86, manual and auto. We don't have the AE86 though, cos the car is so old.
love it when you say THANK YOU😍 very polite Champion..Happy Chinese New Year,Uncle and family ❤️
Would love to see drag race or any competition between Vios, City and Almera soon...and Mazda 2 also
Yeah! Please do a drag race of vios city and almera
Dear YS Khong,
Keep up the good work showing us different car doing genting runs. You have very good adaptability on different cars. Not everyone can do this genting hill climb the way u do.
May I request during your free time. Can help to do a tutorial about torque VS BHP explaining the basic and which is more important.
Thanks, will look into it.
Wow what a hill. This car looks like so much fun to drive
Is not about the brand of the car, it is about the legends drive and review of how the car perform. If you're looking for a new car consider his advice and review for the car. Just my opinion. #LEGENDS KNOWS BEST...
the suspension and handling looks good
If the current CVT-equipped Almera is really "drive-a-slow-car-fast" fun, I could imagine how further exciting the car would be with a manual transmission. Too bad, the current consumer demands don't favour the row-your-own gearbox in sedans.
For those who are not familiar, need to be careful when using lower gear for an extended period of time. The car can get overheated if using lower gear excessively
it's just heats up more, the ecu will adjust its cooling system accordingly
this is better than overheating your brakes, if it does, you're fucked up
It will be much much more fun if it had a 6 speed manual. I had fun watching this guy drive. He genuinely loves cars and driving. Huge respect
I have it in 5 speed manual. I’m in the Philippines tho. MT Torque is also slightly higher (160NM vs 152NM)
a subcompact with A 6speed. that does not exist
the engine/gearbox is surprisingly quiet even when it revs up to 5k :o
Saw james may said the same thing as said "left2 right4 open" in old top gear episode where he act as copilot for rally drive with a Bentley 😎.
1.5 struggling go up. This 1.0 looks so easy
"It's hard to drive a fast car fast, but it's easy to drive a slow car fast", I remember you said this before.
I was gonna recommend you to drive a Viva sometime ago, but I guess this 1.0 will do.
The driving school spec Viva 660BX would be an interesting one to take up Genting.
And that is why the GT86/BRZ scores high in the spoftscars ownership stakes. Better To Drive A Slow Car Fast Than A Fast Car Slow!
basically Takumi's AE86
But drive slow car fast is dangerous. Stability throw to the sea.
@@highiq145 It depends. If it's a Viva or older Myvi, it won't be fun driving it fast.
Most small cars today, Saga, Iriz, gen 3 Myvi, they can hold better with high speed driving.
Great stuff, YS! The engine rocks....
This is like way more quiet than I expected
Am in sg. can't go to genting malaysia any time soon. Will experience driving to genting vicariously through Khong's video.
Hahaha, thanks for supporting our channel.
Hello, Mr Khong, wishing you and family have a wonderful year ahead. Take care and Happy 2021
Thank you, and happy new year, Anderson
You can take a rally driver out of the car but can't take the rally car out of the driver ...reminds me of a mini Nurburgring...cheers YS !
wow 。。the engine sibeh quiet oh!!!compare to uncle khong while driving all new city ..amazing tuning of this engine
Tired of those complained about Uncle 'makan jalan'. He does it when there are no cars, so it is fine. Also, it is safer to drive because the car travels on a straight line.
Thank you. I also tired of explaining. I think those are P drivers who have no clue, but trying to be hero. Thank you for your comment. Made my day!
Love the way he drove that economic car so fast!
I'm surprised to see how quiet it is at 5K RPM. Plus, the car has very good power going up those hills.
Turbo! Thanks for being with us.
Nissan Versa in the U.S. & Canada = Nissan Almera in Malaysia. If i'm not mistaken, the all-new Versa uses a naturally-aspirated 1.6L engine with 122hp. Our all-new Almera only has 100 horses, but it has a low-pressure turbo to increase its torque.
@@izzatfauzimustafa6535 you’re right. Seems like USA market has got the old engine.
I am actually surprised that Nissan still sell this small car in USA. Nobody buys small cars here, only giant sized pickups and SUVs sells well here
@@jamsbong There's still market for entry-level sedans in North America, even though crossovers + pickup + SUVs are dominating. Some might want to buy one as a second car for the household. Some are doing ridesharing jobs using economy cars since SUVs can be a bit expensive for first timers. Or maybe a small number of college kids are still interested to buy such cars as better alternatives to used cars.
@@izzatfauzimustafa6535 honestly. I think college kids would rather spend the money to buy a second hand mustang or M3. They cost almost the same. Maintenance cost of course is a whole other matter.
Uncle Khong...I was anxious when you plough through the mist...so much respect for you. Your internal pace notes must have been very very useful in those situations...Happy New Year!
Happy new year. Knowing the road helps, and so does a little bit of awareness.
so far all your videos Uncle i must say, the last video on satria neo you rest towards the steering to go fast. but this almera makes you smile more, so i guess it is true that slower car it is a fun car to drive. haha keep up uncle!
Wow, I see you're driving fast although the road is winding. Real skillful
Ex rally champion leh
Hi tq Sir for your video.... I'm very happy with the car... I'm lucky, my SA has booking it for me since April 2021... And keep following me until I get the loan...he does not giving up until I get the car.. Very nice SA.. I'll use it on daily basis and I think this is the good car for me.... Thank you sir really enjoy your video.. My husband also like it. ❤️❤️
Thank you for the feedback. Glad you enjoy the car.

As usual good YS style driving. Thanks for the to the point explanations. Be safe and happy blessed new year.

Wish could be at the passanger seat when hes driving, enjoy it, steady uncle👍

alamak...uncle sudah bagi power punya racun. ;-)
Love the pace notes!
Try the 2020 iriz one day if permissible. U will be surprised with the handling
You mean upcoming 2021 facelift
really?
Exciting to drive in the mist and fortunately lesser traffic that day ❤
I feel thrill whenever I watch this video 😍, pls come to Sabah and do some test drive on mountainous Ranau & Kimanis road 💪💪
I would if somebody will sponsor me.
@@YSKhongDriving 😂😂🤣🤣
Surprisingly not many Almera in Sabah whereby Vios is still the norm...
We need some GTR to the mount for real😂
When u don't have bucket seat, slick your body to reduce roll =D learned new stuff
I love this dude !
I feel like this is a car that you can floor the pedal all day long and without any worries :D
This car so great and nice cool
Dpt ride dgn uncle mmg jd moment a. Enjoy tgk die tapau corner.
Important thing is 1.0save fuel
Hopping for the next test drive, there is not only you,but also you bring the passenger... To see how good, power the car with full passengers...
Cannot get volunteers. Anyway, everybody knows a fully loaded car is not as good as an empty one in every aspect of performance, so it is pointless. We will not be doing it, so please don't hold your breath.
Very quite cabin when below 2K rpm
bold driving skills.. i love it.
Ok I watch only halfway. So you didn't use Sport mode? The so called button at the rear part of the gear knob. I'm surprised the L gear can be used in such a way. Quite high speeds.
i believe not many people realize this car has sport mode bcs of the unusual placing of the sport button
Low gear is hard on the engine and not good for fuel economy. No need to use it in most situations.
Wow..fantastic
Thanks Sir for this tremendous feedback. I will head out to Nissan tomorrow for a test drive before deciding to buy.
It would be better if the Sport Mode is turned on. It is slightly hidden so not many noticed it.
Hahaha, will try next time.
love these videos
hello uncle,
glad to see you
I wish you years of health, happiness and peace
Thank you.
The download looked more fun, but the little engine sounded like someone drilling holes in a wall 🤔😉
Well you can say the download is fun, but will there be a new patchc download coming soon that will increase the horsepower?
What download???
@@bp6837 I meant down road, but autocorrect took over 😬
@@Seramics 😂 it needs a 4G data plan upgrade
Uncle Khong can take any boring looking daily driven car and turn it to be driven like a sports car.
Happy New Year, Uncle Kong 🥳🥳
Happy New year.
car review done right!
I watched your videos Honda City RS Hatchback and this Nissan Almera 2022. Both are good, im still confuse which one of the two I will get.
Both are good cars. Pick the one that you feel most comfortsble with.
@yskhong uncle please review the cars stock sound system, most of the car reviewers miss on that, it definitely will put a smile on some people thanks.
We have some copyright issues if we play the sound systems. That is why all rhe reviewers dont review thr sound.
@YS Khong Driving uncle YS really enjoy your reviews. You can try play NCS (No copyright) music, youtube has tonnes. The song names start with NCS. Cheers!
Oh its MISTY! But uncle still speed on. Haha. Happy New Year Uncle YS.
Happy new year Kelvin.
should make car leaderboard like top gear. results would not be accurate in any way with all the traffic and wet/dry conditions but it would be just for fun.
Agreed..its more fun to find out which car dominate the leaderboard chart..👍🏽
The NVH seems good. Like a calm cabin where Mr Khong need not increase his voice level whenever speaking. Speaks pretty calm. And seems rather less screeching noise at bends, not fast enough?
It only has 100 PS, and the emphasis is always on smooth and fast, not about torturing the car. I suppose we can make the tyres squeal a bit but it wont necessarily be any faster.
@@YSKhongDriving ya it seems a pretty smooth, calm but fast drive demonstrated. Good package it has. Maybe in later stage Nissan and Tan Chong might bring out the Nismo version, with improved handling and maybe performance. That might be interesting.
Happy new year uncle!
Great driving (scary though) and nice comments.
With practice comes confidence.
would love to see your opinion on the nissan magnite, going to get it as a first car. very nice drive and the new motor is very interesting.
I think the Magnite is a SUV using the same engine as the Almera, and possibly the same transmission. We do not hve the Magnite here in Malaysia. You must be from India. I think the Magnite would be a great vehicle in India.
15:40 looks like he is enjoying driving by reading the pace notes =)
Hahaha, just having fun, reminiscing....
Hopefully going forward, all your Genting test drive are done with full passengers on board.
I did that once with a van with full passengers for a movie stunt, and it was disastrous. Better to do it alone. Or else cleaning up the car after the drive will be gruesome. 😅
@@YSKhongDriving Well it would be fun to see the passengers reaction to your driving. And also, we could know better the performance of the smaller engines climbing up the hill with the passengers onboard.
