This week's episode sits more on the rare side of the world for the car scene. Holden is a car manufacturer that Australia was once proud to call their own. They produced cars for over 100 years, but in the 2000s they turned a commonly used utility truck into a monster of the streets. The Holden UTE for almost 2 decades put smiles on almost anyone who came across one. It's weird, it looks like something that belongs on a farm, but take a ride in one and you be telling people you want to own a Holden UTE.

“Maloo” is the Aboriginal word for “Thunder”
This is my silly statement. Back on the early 2000s holden had the ss thunder. Ford had the xr8 lightning. Reason being, lightning comes before thunder.

@@WTRGK the Ford Barra was excellent yeah, but the Ecotec is a boat anchor for power, the older Holden V6 was good, but emissions rules and attempts to make it less thirsty killed it's potential. The "Buick" V6 as they called it was a bucket of shit for power, the alloytec was ok but no torque, owned two of both of them... before buying my Ute. I always hoped Holden would get the twin turbo variation that GM put in the caddies of the time tho but sadly of course no, because Holden couldn't have something Caddy had, it would cheapen the brand.
But! GM has registered the Caddy trademark in Aus...so we might still get a cool sedan back in the long term. 🤞

I love my Holden SSV ute, its been my favourite car to drive so far and dont think ill be getting rid of it any time soon. It got to be the best part of living in Australia.
I’ve never owned a cuv or suv. Always cars and usually sedans. I love cars and I love sedan bodies specially big body cars.
White LS3 Ute been my vroom Vroom since 2016. Fast, reliable, comfortable and cool. Great car.
As an Australian who owns a ve Ute. I can confirm they are the best cars ever. You can drive them normally then with a little clutch kick throw the back end and slide into the sunset.

As a Aussie I can say that you can do skids drifts and go to work on a stock ride hight and the car will not give you a issue for 250.000km

A couple of years on from this was made turns out that the Holden Ute was used as a test vehicle for the latest mid engine corvette 😮
Single s trim was only available to 04 up until the VY model... They're V6 3.8l

I always find it a little disorienting when Americans get excited over Holden utes because here they're just seen as tradie/bogan cars. I probably see no less than 30 a day on my commute. But, I can see why they're considered interesting and unique to people who don't often see 2 door sports cars that can transport a lounge suite. My dad's got an XR6 ute and I can appreciate it as something special only seen in this part of the world, even though they're about as common as a Camry here.

I already own a Holden ute, a 1991 Holden Vg S Pac V6 3.8 Has the same motor as the buick regal but na and a series 2 so a tiny bit different,
Identical to the one at 3:32 even same colour but auto, same front and dash etc, they're called vg utility but alot of people mistake them as a vn as theyre the same just ones a ute and other is sedan/wagon
And from vg~vr had the 3.8 v6 from bucik, vs had a redesigned 3.8 v6 called ecotec alot of parts dont fit, some do,
Vg~vs v8 wise had the 5.0 304 v8 from holden but efi,
Vt missed out on the ute as they still were making vs utes from 1995 to 2000,
Vu was realeased in 2000 along with vx range,
You know... ford made them too. If anything the most aussie built car is the barra falcon. It seems that every car channel that ends up talking about Aussie Ute's never even mention the falcons too...

Holden utes came with Ls1, Ls2, Ls3, L76, L77, L98, Ls7 Lsa across the model range from 1997 to 2017

You need to do more homework on your movies, it might have the corvette engine but the camaro was built in the commodore platform of the ve and vf, and its known as commodore ute, the maloo is the souped up version from hsv, look into its more next time so you get it right

I believe the El Camino didn't sell well in the States. Too small for work, not practical as a car. In Australia it was selling like hotcakes because tradesmen who needed a truck bed, but not a full truck. America preferred minitrucks like the S10.

Some of the best ones are specified as a hsv which is a division where they sell the best of the holdens it stands for Holden special vehicles and the latest gtsr Maloo which stoped production in 2018 makes I think around 650hp from an lsa their insane

I had one, they're alright. Basically an XD Elantra but with a V6 and a sporty body. The engine sounds neat with the right exhaust but it's underwhelmingly slow and wrong-wheel drive.
But I'd definitely own another one if I could find a GK1FL with a Beta in it. Sadly they didn't release the Betas here in GK1FL form.
It's currently 1 am and I have exams tomorrow, but will that stop me from watching this? HELL NO!

Ford had their direct equivalent called the falcon. You could option them with a 4L turbo Inline 6 or a supercharged 5L v8. Ford vs Holden is a big deal as well.
I've had one for the last 12 years, it's been "enhanced", otr intake, full exhaust system, tune, next it's a supercharger. it's pure pleasure to drive, it's a sports car with a big boot. I have other cars too, but the ute is my favorite drive.

As a proud Aussie 19 year old Commodore owner, it puts a huge smile on my face seeing our beloved Holden cars being recognised world wide :) nothing better than pulling up to the lights with a rumbling v8 ute and hearing it take off 😩👌🏼

We also have a sedan (which is the one I own myself) and a wagon variant here in Australia, ranging from 3L V6 all the way to 6.2L super charged V8 making 635HP
Actually... The El Camino was available from 1959 to 1960, and 1964 to 1987. They didn't stop making them in the 70's. Lol. 😉

We ALMOST HAD THESE!!!! GM had plans for a new an el camino and it fell through.
So yes I want to haul my stuff in the bed while I haul ass.
It was the Aussie dollar rising too much in value and US vehicle tax laws that stopped it. Holden wouldn't have made enough from them because of the strong Aussie dollar, and it was going to be taxed as a commercial vehicle in the states, so they would have been more expensive than the G8 Holden was selling from the same production line at the time.
@@davidhester6648 well, let's start importing them en masse and get people to.make them left hand drive in the U.S and Canada. And if they can make them all wheel drive as well, even better. I'd love a ford ute in Newfoundland. Left hand drive, lower the power a bit and raise the suspension a fair amount so it's about the height of a station wagon. If I can import any ford/Holden ute, I'd gladly do it

UTE isn't specifically Holden, its a chassis base of a car. These Holden variants of Ute's were called Maloo's or Commodores
well holden and ford have the ute but holden called it the ute not the commodore, the commodore is a sedan the ute is called the holden ute or some people here in aus call it the commodore ute, and the maloo is the hsv version of the ute

It's not called a Holden Ute, it's called a Holden Commodore. Just a different body. You don't call the wagon version a Holden Wagon, it's a Holden Commodore, wagon body.
What do I think of the Holden Ute?
I bloody well own one mate! They're sick. Mine's a VE 1.5 with the 3.6 V6, but fun fact, underneath it's _absolutely identical_ to the 5th gen camaro, even down to the rear subframes being the same. Only difference is the body panels. They share a platform called the Zeta Platform. Just quote Camaro PNs to find the parts you need. Only bits you'll really struggle with on a Ute are the tailshaft (Which you can source from a Caprice PPV) and interior bits (Which you can source the front door trims, centre console, dash parts and any non-specific parts from a G8 and the rest such as the rear panel, carpets and B pillar trims will have to come from Straya.)
In saying that, what's your shipping like to Australia? I'd love to give some of your wheels a crack since I'm looking for something that looks a bit like Work CR Kiwamis but I don't really want to pay CR Kiwami prices for them.

About 25% of vehicles in Australia from the 1950s were UTEs. (Holden and Ford Falcon). They should of released the Holden Malloo in the USA as a sports truck. It would do 170MPH and handled great.

El Camino officially died in 1987. With a last production cars being shifted to Mexico and final car ended in late 1987. Some debate if there are any 1988 models. About 420 were sold in 1988. My father has a 1985 gmc cabarello. It is cool and worked hard in its life. Now it is a show queen.
