When I was a kid, we used to jeat our house with wood. We'd go down in the woods and cut up dead standing trees and haul it up to pack it into the basement for winter. We would always find huge fat grub worms in old oak trees. I haven't seen a worm like those in so long. It must be almost 40 years. Not little ones like yours, Phil. Love that Olive!
Hi Phil the Californias Olive wood is really lovely it has beautiful grain and colour the bark is nice. The bowl is magnificent and unique it looks nice with the bug holes and the cracks it has amazing character. You are a masterwoodturner and have brilliant skill. Thank you for a fabulous video. Amanda xx
Another beautious piece, Phil. I think the bug holes are an act of nature and tell a bit of the history of the piece. Glad you left then in and not filled.
Got my Thursday evening Shady Acres fix on Friday evening. Huge blizzard kept me plowing and shovelling til late last evening. Lovely job and lovely wood, for sure. Thanks for sharing, Phil.
Olive is just gorgeous! I would love to have a short section in a video that compares different types of wood in your turnings. The Vegas olive and the CA olive especially.
Wow! The grain on this piece is so nice! At about the 6:40 mark, there was an eye looking out from the piece into the camera, too cool. You're an artist Phil, a true artist!!👍🙂
I paused the video there, trying to decide what is staring out at us. I think either a bird or a rabbit, with the color going up and left being the beak or ears.
Hi Phil. Am at minute 7. I am accustomed to you using the 1.5 inch flat scraper in curved hollow areas. Am used to seeing you use your gouge to sheer-scrape. Cool We're getting a few inches of snow at the moment in low wind conditions. Nice fluffy snow falling slowly. Peaceful night. Back to the video. ...Lovely, graceful shape. Like a wave.
Hi 👋, Phil from Phil, that is some great looking 👀 grain, Artwork, I been back again to the Uk , one of my friends new someone selling some tools, I picked up 24/5 Crown wood turning tools, and a curved tool rest, Nice job Phil , keep up the great work, from the moulin.
Another great turning Phil, that is really remarkable grain and the bug holes are just a part of the history of this piece of wood, really enjoyed this one. All the best to you. Regards Jim
Howdy Phil👋👋 my 7 yr old son finally watched some of your turning videos with me. So many questions. He also thinks your wood lathe runs on magical gas... not electricity. I said it all depends on what Phil had for dinner my boy.
Beautiful piece Phil. That olive is really stunning; the heartwood is awesome. Looks like a critter with an eyeball on the back bottom at around 19:05 -- maybe a bird of some kind.
Living in Central California I am surrounded by olive orchards (Lindsey Olives is about 40 miles away). However it is not easy to get ahold of pieces unless you are there when a tree falls or they are removing to build homes. Love turning it and the smell is very nice like cooking with olive oil. The whole shop smells wonderful.
That's some fantastic grain! It makes me think of the fine banding that some agates have. Wow! Did the bugs that got a spin crawl around a little funny afterward? Thank you for another beautiful one!
That grain is amazing! I might have to break down and buy a piece of olive wood! I have seen many beautiful pieces turned from it. That's an awesome bowl that you made. Thanks for sharing.
I just received a pretty nice pile of Chestnut from a friend who needed some some spindle work done. The grain colors almost looks like the Heartwood of that olive wood. Waiting on it to dry is the hardest part. Happy turning my friend ☺️. Awesome piece 👍
A friend gave me a piece of Texas olive wood that I re-sawed. I wish I had kept a hunk to send you then you could try Texas olive. That piece you turned came out looking great.
For fifty some years Friday has always been my favorite. Following you for some time now, my favorite day is Thursday! I am serious about how much your videos mean to me. What an awesome piece! PS How am I doing on shorter comments😊?
Hi Phil Late commenting this week, in the Dominican for some sun and relaxation. Fantastic grain inside and out with bug holes for decoration, what could be better. As always beautiful work. Take care Bob
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop Just curious ; do you still like and use your e-bike ? My wife and I are thinking about a couple . We hope you have a great weekend . 😊😊
Phil Interesting I grew up in the middle of an olive grove east of San Diego in Spring Vally California Now living in La Pine Oregon Turned out very nice Thank You
Phil was sure surprised to see the difference in California Olive and Las Vegas Olive. And the bark seems a lot different as well. Sure seems as thought this piece is not nearly as hard and the Nevada batch. Sure got a great finish on it as well. Years ago I used 0000 steel wood and Johnson pasted was to polish the finished furniture pieces made. The wax kept the dust down and I agree without it the dust is horrible. Once you first showed the scotch brite on the sanding disk it is the only way I do it on the lathe now. Thats for that great trick. Another beautiful turning my freind, Gary
And the bugs! I don't recall any bugs in the Nevada Olive. Yes, this is a bit softer, too. Hey, I used to use steel wool and wax, too! I forgot all about that. Probably learned that in Mechanics Illustrated or Popular Mechanics. Thanks, buddy, I hope you are feeling a little less pain, today! 😊
I learned that in high school shop class. The shop teacher loved his Johnson paste wax ..got me hooked 🤪🥴 I go in tomorrow morning to have X-rays and find out if I can start putting weight on the ankle 🦵
This is my first video of yours that I have watched and this olive wood bowl is absolutely gorgeous! I love seeing what's inside, the grain, the little marks, holes, etc. all which gives the wood personality. Love it❣️
Hi Phil! What a gorgeous bowl. The bug holes, crack and bark give the bowl so much character. I love olive wood, it’s always beautiful. Terrific turning as always.
Live Meat ! ! ! Pop'em on the griddle or eat them "Quigley Down Under" style! I prefer mine, soaked in and then with a shot of Mescal. Yumm, Yummy! Such a beautiful, wavy grain of the heartwood and the odd shape it forms, inside the bowl. Another winner (larvae dinner), Phil!
Interesting piece of olive, I don't know if you've had such a dark tight core in any recently. You and Stubby did a great job with it. I like the combination of wormholes and natural edge. It's always a pleasure to see you at it, and the end result (even if oopsies are included 😅).
Not to long ago I turned a bowl from a dead elm tree that was pretty punky and when I spun it up it started flinging ants all over the place. And it kept doing it for a while . I truly enjoy watching you turn,
Wow, Phil! That olive wood bowl is BEAUTIFUL! The grain is wonderful and I love the natual shape. You meant it when you said 'piece of art'. It really is lovely, no matter how it sits or stands. Thank you!❤

I've turned about five or six pieces of it, Colleen. Only one was almost all sap wood, not much of that beautiful heart wood. As long as the heart wood is there, yeah, it's all beautiful! 😊
That came out very nice Sir! What beautiful grain! I too use the 3M pads and also use the thin 3M sanding pads. They are about 1/4 in thick and come with ultra fine grits. They do a great job between coats and you can rinse them off and reuse. They are a bit pricey but last a long time, so much less expensive in the long run.
That is beautiful
