Flo was so ahead of his time. Nobody else played like that in the 90s
@1983Overkill dude no offense, I love Pete, but no 🤕
Y hoy quien toca así?
Cryptopsy was probably the first band that I couldn’t understand how someone could play so fast. Now I understand it.. I just can’t do it. Lol. Yet…
😀 same here
@@drumtechniqueacademy Thank you for this he's so fast the camera can't keep up haha. Amazing drummer one of the all time best
Flo's playing is crazy, I love how he puts a fill every two seconds in basically every song. It's pure wild anger.
Also he is very natural and doesn't really care about being super precise as a drum machine, he always has a very human touch on the drums, very unique.
PS: I like the vocals but he still makes me laugh a bit with that UUUURRRGGGHHHH I have to admin. Matt can do a lot more on vocals but many Cryptopsy fans are still missing Lord Worm and do not accept anything half comprehensible.
I like Matt on the albums better. Especially the self titled album. He sound VICIOUS on there. All the live videos I’ve seen he does that “UUURRRGGGHHH” thing pretty much the whole time and it doesn’t sound the best.
Yesss this! I kinda miss the human feel in the drumming on Cryptopsy's latest releases. The drumming sounds super tight now. Nothing wrong with that of course, but the tiny imprecisions you could hear on Once Was Not and previous albums elevated the music to another level for me.
Flo is so chaotic in his drumming it's amazing. Like he's always just barely keeping control. And Matt's vocals are kickass, I agree.
Flo is a monster, and very unique amongst metal drummers. Part of what makes him perfect for Cryptopsy is that he is not a traditionally "tight" drummer. The chaotic nature of his playing is perfect for Jon Levasseur's riffs and the spastic nature of Cryptopsy's music. Absolutely love his playing.
In -98, when i was in school, we did an almenac where we were to show our hobbies. I played drums back in the days and we was asked one person everyone looked up too, everyone choose their parents…i choose Flo Mounier! Legend!
Watch Flo's mouth. His breathing technique plays a huge role in his speed/endurance.
I noticed him take big gulps of air, like a power lifter.
@@ChrisWilliamsREI Yup, and he knows exactly when and where to do it.
@@keysersoze9511 That's right, jackass. Flo said it himself in an interview decades ago. See what happens when you speak with no knowledge?
My band in high school played a show with Cryptopsy, and about 30 people sat on both sides of the stage just watching him play the whole set with their jaws on the floor. I watched as he blasted a brand new china into what looked like puzzle pieces when he took it off of the stand.
Matt has such a huge range, even though you wouldn't tell from this video. I loved his vocals on the Unspoken King. Glad to see Flo on the channel - Him and Hellhammer are just so damn creative its almost criminal.
Just now got more into Flo, and he's really becoming a big favourite now! And as always good stuff Marthyn!
How about you do the Nick Barker some time? His work is so creative it would be interesting to see.
IMO he did his greatest work (CoF, Dimmu, Old Mans Child) when Sickdrummer or Drummersfromhell weren't around yet, so there are only a few snippets of his live drumming in these days. :/
I was backstage at a show with Napalm and Lock-up - Barker farted and it made me throw-up
In the fellowship of these metal drummers Marthyn is the Aragorn the king of ankle technique
😄
@@drumtechniqueacademy Don't break that ankle kicking an enemy's skull though!
Love his Extreme Metal Drumming 101 DVD! Lots of great and crazy drum solos. Really love that DVD! Fun and educational!
The power and creativity is off the map
I think vocals are fucking sick !!! Agree on that one 🤘
I'm watching your channel for years now. Your content is improved and you look very confortable on the camera. Drum is life! peace!
I'm with you on those vocals, they have a special 'raw' kind of texture that just sounds incredible.
I think you'd be Samwise Gamgee because you're always super positive, your strength and will are remarkable and you're very perseverant. You look like the kind of guy who doesn't give up until you reach your goals while also helping others to achieve their own, even if you need to carry them on your back, you'll get them to their destiny. You also seem like a noble and loyal person, so yeah, Samwise Gamgee.
You just made my day with that comment 😍
@@drumtechniqueacademy I'm just being honest man! Thanks for replying and keep it up, you're doing a great job!
There's things worth blastin' for Mr. Frodo
Flos drumming is brutal and frantic at the same time and leaves you feeling panic in a good way.
Marthyn thank you very much for interesting 📹 I love this band myself, but your lesson helped me review the drums and learn a lot
Also love his vocals bro!!! Just all around classic, death metal feel. Remember seeing them with Gorguts & Nile in 99!!👊🥁
Holy shit! What a lineup
the signature pre-pubescent voice crack scream 🤣
@@forrestoellermann9462 no one else talks about Flo's screams in the 90s
@@6.thedollar415 dude i have a video of one from benedictine convulsions, flo used to sound like an angry pre-pubescent kid screaming at a video game (in the good way) shit sounded so cool lol
@@forrestoellermann9462 you should upload that
The good Flo, one of my drum heroes. The drums in None so Vile and Once Was Not are just incredible
He only started heel/toe in the last few years (beginning with the first EP). He said he wanted to go faster than he ever has
Phobophile by Cryptopsy was the song back in the day you presented to people who didnt know about extreme metal to have their ears bleed.
I currently practice with the bass guitar, but I also liked the drums as a last option. I like this channel, how he details the events, have always followed him ...
Great videos, salute from Puerto Rico
2:07 "I love the vocals" lol, you should try, the original Cryptopsy vocalist, Lord Worm's version of the song :)
Drum Teacher Reacts: Mike Hamilton (especially from his Deeds of Flesh era) would be a great video. Dude is a fucking machine.
I like the vocals to....that guy is a beast on vocals!!
You're definetly Aragorn and Eugene is Legolas🤣
Love the vocals too !
I’ve been binge watching all your videos. Lots of good info.
*thank you my friend* 🙏
@@drumtechniqueacademy the most amazing video so far was your hour long double bass endurance (I think it was something like that) Very impressive!
you mean that 20mins practice pad run with the cheap millenium pedal?
@@drumtechniqueacademy yes. That’s the one.
Bravo majstore,
Do Archspire next!!
Btw, i didnt know that Flo does heel toe!
Flo os one of the best brutal drummers. Respect
Maybe not always super precise but always loved Flo's Drumming..chaotic but awesome!
Maybe you could react to Proscriptor (absu)
Marthyn you could be The Sauron 🔥💪🤘
I love those vocals too man.... Sounds like it was recorded on my last pig hunt.
This was Matt's dial up modem vocal era.
I was lucky to see None so vile the whole album played live at the Party San! Unfortunately, I am seeing there are no videos on youtube :(
Amazing Drummer and live vocals lml
You would definitely be Legolas from Lord of the Rings! Haha! I could totally see that Marthyn with your dreaded hair. You do have deadly accuracy after all!
Yes to Cryptopsy, Yes to Archspire and Yes to such Vocals. I was struck by Obituary´s cause of death in 1991 when i was twelf... primarily by the vocals. Drums are also my instrument. I have a tiny channel.
Nice video marthyn and also nice t-shirt
🤘💪
Great video and congratulations for the channel. If you have time you should do a review of Tobias Schuler, the drummer of Der Weg eine Freiheit. Not only a good drummer, also an excellent musician on others instruments as well.
I would say you would be aragorn because you were the one to gather all these monster drummers to teach us just as he was the first one to say he would join the fellowship. You told the drumming community that we have your sticks lol
it's all good as long as I'm not smeagol :-)
@@drumtechniqueacademy "My precious... hip flexors" xD Love from Russia!
I guess you explained the technical reason I took to a band like Archspire. I had done all my homework with Cryptopsy. They were way too ahead of their time. People could only hear the chaos when they heard Cryptopsy whereas Archspire had the benefit of more advanced studio production and ever familiar rap-style vocals.
The vocals JAHAHAHA in love
I believe Spencer more commonly uses the flamadiddle sticking for the blasts, but it's the same principle.
Needs more views
Gotra love the Dirk Blast 8))
first - awesome video
my longtime favorite drummer for jazz and grind
yeah - he's the man!!!
@@drumtechniqueacademy i remember a video where he talks about learning his drumming and he said - i just play alot and try for myself
You're the Ring Marthyn!
You should break down Cold Hate, Warm Blood if you haven't yet. That blast beat at the end section seems to go faster every time through
The moment I heard CRYPTOPSY years ago (lord worm stuff) I knew this was gonna be my favorite Death metal band of all time!
hey marthyn i just had a question on how to fix a problem in having with double bass. whenever i go faster than about 150 my feet switch to ankles and i have no control and i start to lean back on my chair. i want to be like nils fellstrom where you lean forward with full leg. how to i fix this so i don’t lean back and switch to ankles??
🔥🔥🔥🔥
Tcheck out my new and never seen before double bass drum technique.
great vid and yes his vocals rule.
At 11:19 what are those blasts, double strokes? His sway throws me off and i cant see what he's doing, but it always blows my mind.
Thanks so much for this video \m/.
PS: What sticks are you using, those are some extreme stick wraps too :)
I'd say Eugene could be Legolas and you... maybe Frodo? ;p
Also this is probably the first time I've heard you talking about vocals (and saying that you love them at least 4 times lol)
Lord Worm forever #1 !
Anyone notice how Flo continuously varies the tempo? He is almost never playing exactly on time, he is either slowly accelerating or slowing down.
Yeah, in my experience he has a tendency to speed things up live
Happens a lot with live bands that aren't playing to a click!
lmao. Quiet part with just the music and vocalist at @5:12 and the subtitles pop up and say he yelled "FUN". haha
Hi ! What's your set up in this vidéo ? The e-drum !
Hey Martyn, isn't that triplet blast just another version of the more commonly known 'Dirk (Verbeuren) blast'?
lets gooooo
everybody who listen to Cryptopsy should know this group if from montreal ( quebec ). Ca fais plaisir de voir un groupe quebecois ^^
I saw Cryptopsy play at Montebello Rockfest in like, 2013 or 14 (forget the exact year). Lord Worm actually performed with them which was great. But afterwards Alice Cooper was on the main stage. His drummer did a solo and it was so underwhelming due to the fact that I had just seen Flo do an entire set that was more insane than his solo. Obviously the solo was fitting for Alice Cooper, but ykno.
Flo is god!!!
5:12 subtitles go "fun" x)))))
I have a question I’ve wanted to ask for quite a while. A lot of people have criticized Flo for being sloppy and sarcastically suggested he should try getting a metronome. I always thought that the music was just too intricately chaotic for those peoples’ brains (not an insult - hearing individual notes at those speeds is a challenge), and that his playing was too advanced for them to understand. I still remember a ghost note in the middle of the build up to the outro of Depths You’ve Fallen that is simply insane. However, not being an advanced drummer myself, this question has been lingering, so I’d be curious as to your opinion on the matter. Thanks!
Awesome content as usual! But I have to ask, what t-shirt are you wearing haha? Krimh?
🙏 yes 🤟
@@drumtechniqueacademy Thank you! \m/

I never watched LOTR so I'm gonna use the Ninja Turtles instead: Flo is Master Splinter, Eugene is Michaelangelo, and Marthyn is Donatello. (Side note: Dave Astor is Krang)
Dave astor from cattke decap?
@@nicolasreny221 yup
@@NecroticFleshrot I don’t watch tnmt so idk krang but I’m curious as to y he would be him
Hey Marthyn, have you heard of Kai hahto from Wintersun or Nightwish? Maybe do a react video plz? 😁
Isn't the flam accent rudiment the 'Dirk Blast'?
Marthyn please do a video about Nick Barker
the kind of Flam's blast is also played and more or less invented by Dirk Verbeuren ;)
You mean that you first saw dirk using that sticking? (That's not the same thing as "inventing" my friend 😉)
@@drumtechniqueacademy ah I saw him calling it "the Dirk Verbeuren's blast" (It's on his RUclips's channel) ! but anyway, this stickin' is really cool to play ;)
Yeah I agree...still good to work on that sticking 🤟
What drum set do you have?
I say Marthyn is Legolas! With his Elf eyes he sees all the different techniques these drummers use.
That solo sounds like it was taken directly from Tornado of Souls
Sounds like it could have been inspired by Tornado
Flo is no doubt the titan of metal drumming!
But the question is: should not he use french grip exclusively?
Please react to Matt Greiner of August Burns Red!
HOW do you not hit your laptop?
Will happen sooner or later 😉
legolas jovanonic
Always been a HUGE fan of Lord Worms vocal style. Definitely an acquired taste for most people though...can't handle his level of brutality 😂 if I'm not mistaken, he taught poetry at a college? Dude's a beast either way
that's matt mcgachy btw, not lord worm.
Yes Lord worm is a English teacher and retired from cryptopsy
You're Gimli of course!
Good ol Dirk Blast
hjahahahhaahhaah smoothie is delicious man comon
You'd definitely be Samwise Gamgee. He always made sure Frodo didn't mess up. The voice of reason.
So when you think about.....he was the real hero., not Frodo.
That flam rudiment tho, I call it the Dirk blast. Created by Dirk Verbeuren
*created? you mean that you saw this kind of sticking first explained/used by dirk verbeuren, right?*
@@drumtechniqueacademy yep. You should check out Alex Pelletier playthrough of Light speed, he’s super fast on that song. You should also check out Unbreakable, another awesome play through. He’s another formidable drummer like Flo Mounier but much faster than Flo. I heard quarantine is almost around 320-340 Bpm like Light speed and Vies d’ anges. There’s a new Archspire music video called golden mouth of ruin. Spencer did great on that one, still at 350 Bpm. Feinted blue ornaments is a super fast despised icon. This song is believed to be at 390 Bpm from Alex Pelletier. He might be using gravity blast though but the kick drum is like wow. Alex Pelletier has his own youtuber video play through of The aftermath-Despised icon. He was so fast on this one. Another 310 bpm song along with the music video of bad vibes-Despised icon. His drum playthrough is through Nuclear blast records channel, both light speed and Unbreakable. UMC, sick drummer magazine, 66Samus himself comment his playthrough as one of the best, without a doubt.
*lots of things I **_should_** do :-)*
You would be Pippin 😂
Marthyn would be Tom Bombadil
Pls
look for Paweł Jaroszewicz
No word about his absolute unique sounding blasts? Weird.
lol. " i love the vocals" erhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh urrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr oohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh lol.. i don't mind death metal growls.. but ENUNCIATE YOUR WORDS MAN!!!!!!. I have a few of their albums and flo's instructional vid. great vid. made me think of the alice cooper scene in wayne's word. dude in a death metal band going apes shit all the time. i turn on the dvd and he talks like the hippy teacher in beavis and butthead. sooooooooooo mellow
First off if you know anything about death metal, you'd know you don't need to hear the lyrics. Especially cryptopsy.
Secondly this is a live perfomance, matt actually enunciates pretty well in the studio, but live a lot of vocalists enunciate less to keep their vocals in check, corpsegrinder is the best example of this, but frank mullen did it too.
@@jimit.4220 i just don't like the dude's voice.
Eugene is Gimli, you are probably Legolas, ^^ Always knowing why anyone is doing what.
DEATH METAL ES EL CAOS!!! \m/
