    Saw these guys live last year, they are INSANELY tight. Probably the most precise live act I've seen, they would routinely just stop playing for 30 plus seconds and as soon as the crowd went quiet they were just back in with no count. Absolutely unreal, I love them so much.

      I got a bit obsessed with figuring out how they come in so quickly - if you notice the singer, she does something with her hands & head movement just before they come in. They're all watching the singer at all times to know exactly when to come in, and I guess they rehearse the absolute living shit out of their songs. Even still, they are so impressive live. It's pure chaos but it's also rehearsed to an inch of its life

    The fun thing about this song is, that the album version is at about 220-225 bpm but they play it way faster during live shows (as they do with some of their other songs as well). Kahokiss has stated in an interview that she started challenging herself to play this song faster and faster, so apparently she's arrived at 240 bpm by now. I wonder if she's gonna try to play it even faster at future shows.
    But the band is pretty insane from a rhythmic point of view in general. If you listen to their albums you'll notice a lot of times they drop a quarter or even a sixteenth note here and there, which makes it sound a lot more chaotic and somewhat like it's accidental. But then they perform those weird rhythmic anomalies live and you realize it's all on purpose and they're just crazy good musicians.

    • @tomdonnelly6156
      @tomdonnelly6156 Год назад +12

      Yes, I think the song was basically a technical exercise to see how fast the rhythm section could play - hence the lack of chord changes and the like!
      One of the things about this band is that their early material (which is also great by the way!) was written conventionally on guitar by the singer, Accorinrin. However she says she gave up playing guitar and now writes exclusively using vocal lines and melodies which are then arranged by the band as a whole. This explains some of the unusual rhythms they play, so if you listen to a lot of their songs the rhythm is mapped almost phonetically to the vocal. Therefore you get strange effects like the song "Dirty Old Fart..." starting with what sounds like half a beat or something. No count in of course because they never do count ins,live they rely on visual cues or, and I've seen this with my own eyes, the sound of the singer's breath before she starts singing

    If you watch her right hand closely, she's bouncing the stick, not driving it. Such an elegant technique.
    I also noticed she's turned more to the left than you are, which lines her arm up with the snare and hi-hat so that she's just moving her arm forward and backward, not left to right. The drumming equivalent of economy picking.

    • @tonesthegrey6452
      @tonesthegrey6452 11 месяцев назад +3

      I was looking for a comment saying something like this. I know pretty much nothing about playing drums, but it looked to me like Mike is making himself move his hand/arm in two planes, back and forward as well as side to side, and in the reference video it looks to me like the snare drum and high hat are aligned so that the young lady only has to go back and forward to alternate. Now I don't mean to minimize the skill and endurance required to be able to do this for an entire song at all, but it seems to me that optimizing the placement of kit components and seating position to make everything as efficient as possible by minimizing stick and arm travel and especially cutting the planes in which the stick and arm have to travel and reverse directions at such breakneck speed in half may well play a role in taking it from impossible to only nearly impossible. Now this is purely speculation on my part and regardless of what all might be optimized the ability to not only do this but to maintain it for an entire song is nearly incomprehensible to me, but if you're going to challenge yourself by attempting this madness it seems only fair to look for any ways to economize movement that might help. Does anyone make carbon fiber or some other super lightweight drum sticks that might help? If so, attempting this seems like a good excuse to avail oneself of some. ;)

    I've seen them four times over the last year and they might be the best live band going right now, they're just supernaturally locked in with each other as a singular force. This song is always a highlight of their set. They actively discourage fans from posting concert footage to RUclips (they're okay with sharing on Insta/Facebook) which is why that's hard to find, but you can find plenty of their official videos and live appearances on their official channel and Damnably Records (their label). A lot of their stuff has more hooks & melodies than this but they really leaned into the drinking-from-a-firehose noise blasts on their most recent album.

  • @riangarianga

    I only tried drumming for a short while and I sucked at it, but that allows me to get an idea of what's going on.
    Unless the perspective is tricking me, and I might be totally mistaken, but both of you seem to play it with really different technique:
    - She seems to have changed her posture for the blast beat, like she turned a bit over to the left in order to allow her right arm to move more or less back and forth to hit either the snare or the hi-hat. You're sitting in a standard position, moving your right strictly sideways in order to hit the snare or the hi-hat.
    - She's actually using her arm as a whip, like in the linear drumming style used in funk, doing everything in a very fluid way. It's her whole right shoulder that seems to reposition her arm to hit whatever is necessary at a time. Again, mostly back and forth movement, not too much sideways.
    - In general she's way more fluid about the way she moves, she seems to go back to a standard stance whenever it's necessary, then she turns to the left again when she needs to do the blast beat. You're stiffer, it reminds me of my first tries strictly downpicking Master of Puppets.
    Just with these two minor temporary changes in your technique I think an accomplished drummer like you would be able to play it with way less effort!

    Not much on RUclips? They blew up in 2019. Heavy hitters like Ulrich and Navarro were mentioning them in interviews and Fantano put Itekoma Hits at number 80 in his top 100 albums of the 2010s.

    she´s using different technique while playing as it seems.. she´s not using the wrist motion but fingers .. that´s tricky but it takes some time to learn to do .. there are tons of drummers from some extreme metal bands that have this aproach it´s great for fast stuff .. for example check out the guy Marthyn Jovanovic from DTA ( Drum Technique Academy) he has youtube channel too .. and he´s explaining a lot of stuff right there he has some exercises there ... and btw he was previously drummer of metal band Belphegor .. also found there this video that they have with Hannes Grossmann ( ex-Obscura) where he explained something like there too here is the link ruclips.net/video/UjbngglK-tE/видео.html

    have you heard any "clown core"?, really good drummer there also, think it's some kind of jazz fusion madness, they are american though, pretty crazy

    • @dutchdykefinger
      @dutchdykefinger Год назад

      yep, the drummer is louis cole, and the sax player is sam gendel
      open secret lol
      case in point: ruclips.net/video/6OJHDJdplcY/видео.html, the beat on the 35 second mark
      left handed, with recognizable mannerisms in how he works the ride/bell and tendencies to really put his foot down on the bassdrum, and put small cymbals on top of his snare.
      now compare the beat on that video, to clown core's "existence", about halfway into the song, around the dirty stanky single bass fill he doesm, especially right after it.
      it's the same fucken beat, (wellthe sh*t eating stanky single bass foot fill is even worse on clown core lol) because it's him lol
      he played a fair bit of funk and drum and bass, sam and lous were part of the band "knower", the song overtime is crazy funky shit that gets real progressive in the end, great song lol
      ruclips.net/video/GnEmD17kYsE/видео.html
      projects under louis' own name are very heavily rooted in funk too, there he plays keys, usually in a very staccato way, and sings, louis's singing voice is very high pitched and his style can be a bit prince-like at times
      they are extremely musically talented boys alrright all of them are multi instrumentalists on top of being REALLY good at their main instrument

    "I have to see this band live." I said that EXACT same thing when youtube recommended that EXACT same video!! & I frickin' DID get to see them live!! & THEY WERE FRICKIN' AMAZING!! I mean... like they were every bit as good as you'd hope they'd be!! such a great band!! I highly recommend!!
    I'm pretty much 100% certain that it was because of all the drummer vids I watch that youtube recommended it. so the drummer was also my inlet into the land of otoboke beaver. & that makes this vid kinda like the snake eating its own tail or something... ya know?

    The angles of the hh and snare are different. She can use her bigger back muscles that don't tire as quickly because she's pulling her arm more back and forth vs you rotating at the shoulder. Try lining it up!

    I hope the drummers of this time are trying to attempt to imitate this style of drumming because we need more thrashcore drumming in bands, like D.R.I., Suicidal Tendencies, Corrosion Of Conformity, Municipal Waste and more.

    That is NOT a blastbeat.... it's a super strenuous beat, though.
    What she is playing is a modified skank beat (aka: punkbeat, or Slayer-beat, etc. etc) with 16th note on the hi-hat.
    She would be playing a blastbeat if she did not alternate between the snare and hi-hat with her left hand. Also, she would have double the amount of kick drum notes.
    A blast is:
    Kick × × × × × × × ×
    Snare × × × × × × ×
    Hats. × × × × × × × ×

    I saw them this year poor girl screwed up her solo, had another go and screwed that up to, but what she was trying to do was pretty hard. Wasn't until the end of the show I realised her left leg was in plaster. Somehow she managed to do everything except the flash solo flawlessly.
    Have you any idea why a lot of Japanese girl bassists play barefoot including Hano-Chan, Otoboke Beaver's. Someone suggested it's so they can feel the kick drum so they don't have it in their monitor - why?

    • @MaartenT
      @MaartenT 10 месяцев назад

      I believe Otoboke Beaver don't use IEM's. At least, that's what I heard from people that went to one of their concerts. I know for Band-Maid's bass player Misa she used to play without in-ear monitors and she plays bare-foot as well. So it might indeed be to feel the beat better. But to be fair, it's also something I have read, I don't know if there are any interviews that explain the reason.
      Edit: It looks like the drummer here at least uses IEM's, so I guess I am at loss.

      @@MaartenT She still plays monitor-less, going by the vibrations through the stage from the drum kit and general obviations... The bare foot assassin🥷
