    Lin and Larry Pardey circumnavigated twice on two different boats: each of them were engine-less, hand-built by Larry, and less than 30'. I bring this up because people who aren't familiar with sailing vessels might be surprised that a boat of this size could be fit for ocean passages.
    Pacific Seacraft makes excellent, high quality yachts that are small and ocean-capable. The 25 is no different. I believe this boat is a worthwhile project for someone looking for a true go-anywhere pocket cruiser and isn't afraid to restore her.
    She's perfect for someone with a little bit of land to store her on a trailer and restore her on his or her own time, at least that's what I would do.

    Learning the Lines is a channel about us, an average couple in our 20's, with big dreams to be sailing the world by the time we're in our 30's. We're not afraid to jump into anything, put in the work, and learn as we go. For this reason our channel is very DIY focused, with the goal to show anyone watching that a lot is possible if you're not afraid to make some mistakes along the way.

    Want to be blown away? Tour a Pacific Seacraft Dana 24 now. 1 foot shorter and yet somehow it’s a ten times bigger boat;). There is 6’ 1” head room below decks. Mine has a shower in the head and a cockpit shower;)

    I had one years ago on the Gulf of Mexico. They are very strong, not very fast, but with the canoe stern, it took waves with ease. I moved up to a bigger boat but still miss that little gem!

    Now that's a sweet little boat. A friend of mine in Corpus Christi has a Pacific Seacraft, a 28 footer I think it is, and they're a good boat builder. I just helped a friend of mine in Kema, Texas, only 35 miles south of me here in Houston, swap out his sails on a Catalina 25, and you can stand up and walk around in that boat. I'm 6'2" tall, need I say more.

    I think a lot of folks are missing the point here. For the price, you are unlikely to lose a great deal of money on this boat. It would be dynamite for a "learning boat". Yes, the headroom(or lack of) would be a great drawback for 65 yo me, and my best friend is 7 ft1. I currently have a Nor'Sea 27, and it has a bit more than 6ft headroom, but Too Tall Dave can stretch out fully in either the aft cabin, or the v berth. This would be a great boat to use for a trial boat, to see if boating is for you. My original McGregor 22 has changed hands a half a dozen times since I had her, each of us kept her about 5-7 yrs, and then went on to a bigger & better boat. She's still out there, making someone into a sailor. This simple boat has much to recommend it.

    That would be a great DIY boat. You are right being 25' it would be fairly easy and cheep to restore. If I still lived anywhere near water I would consider it but Oklahoma has the wind but not the water. I have never been a fan of going around in circles in ponds especially after growing up near the Louisiana coast and living in California, Hawaii, and Florida.

    Back 1979 I built a PS 25 from a kit. I purchased the kit from Pacific Seacraft and had a lot of interactions with the owners of the company, Henry and Mike. It took me seven months to finish the boat. On day while working on the boat as it neared completion, Mike and Henry stopped by to see how I and the boat were coming along. They told me it was the best finished PS 25 they had ever seen, including the factory built boats.
    I know the boat I built sailed as far as American Samoa from southern California. Years later I saw the boat in American Samoa under the fourth owner. It broke my heart a little to see how rundown the boat had become. But she was still floating and I like to think she was begging to be cleaned up, refit and out on the ocean again.

    Some facts behind this "interesting" boat;
    Another time, another world...
    When this was built in the mid 70s the average size of a cruising sailboat was 26'. You want standing room, then buy the 32'. The canoe stern world cruisers are inspired by J. Slocum's and Robin Knox Johnson's world circumnavigations. They survived in boats like this, others died in transom sterns. The canoe stern handles waves that are bigger than the boat much better. Small boats that went faster than the waves didn't exist back then. The canoe shape is also intrinsically stronger in wood (which Josh and Robin's boats were made of). The size and shape of these boats also make more sense when you consider that inflation was in the high teens, minimum wage was $2.60/hr, and I was making 19% in a money market act. Fiberglass sailboat production boomed in the late 70s crashed and has never recovered. The man who ended inflation recently died -Paul Volcker.
    As the US stopped manufacturing (expensive union labor) and started importing, these boats offered an exiting life to layed-off workers.

    • @Morrisfactor
      @Morrisfactor 4 года назад +7

      Don't forget the 1991 Luxury Tax pushed by Ted Kennedy and George Mitchell (signed by GH Bush) which pretty much destroyed the US boat building industry. Over 100,000 American jobs were lost and the USA went from a NET yacht exporter to a NET yacht importer. It has never recovered.

    • @johnhelm7090
      @johnhelm7090 4 года назад +6

      J. Slocum's boat, the Spray, was NOT a canoe stern, it was anything but. The idea of a canoe stern was to leave a cleaner wake, making a displacement hull faster, but the draw back was a following sea. Since the canoe stern did not have as much lift as a wider stern, it was not as forgiving in a breaking following sea.

    • @q.e.d.9112
      @q.e.d.9112 4 года назад

      John Helm
      Came here to say pretty much the same thing. Structural integrity and simpler construction were the main advantages of the double ender, but being “pooped” when running off in big seas was MORE likely in a double ender.
      The canoe hull form’s reputation came mainly from the Colin Archer Redningskoyte lifeboats which were seakeeping lifeboats built to massive scantlings. In the days when most yachts had neither the hull form nor the scantlings to make adequate ocean cruisers, these vessels were popular choices. As they were gradually being replaced by steel motor lifeboats they were snapped up by adventurous sailors. The type were further popularised by William Atkins “Eric” design of which Knox-Johnson’s “Suhaili” is an example.

    • @skyak4493
      @skyak4493 4 года назад +1

      @@johnhelm7090 Spray was not a canoe stern. It had a canoe shape below the waterline but a small transom and boomkin above. I disagree with the rest -a canoe stern in a small slow boat is desirable in a following sea first because lifting the stern pushes the bow down and second because any slight turn is amplified into a broach by the lift of the upside transom. Canoe sterns have no off-center buoyancy to cause this problem. If following waves are breaking you are running into shallows and need to turn.

    I’ll add my $0.02 cents on this little gem. Granted she’s small and built for munchkins, the Pacific Seacraft is at home on the highway or the ocean. Built strong, with her full keel she’ll track well in heavy weather and although you’ll not win many races with her she will get you to your destination safely. I’d strongly urge the eventual owner of this vessel to set her up as a cutter rig. She can use the additional sail area. Given this model was offered as a cutter rig from the factory, with luck you could find an original cutter rigged mast.
    I’m guessing that was a YSM 10, which if memory serves makes 8hp. I’m basing that on a YSM 12 that I had in my Watkins 27. It was rated at 10hp. Those engines were almost indestructible if given decent maintenance. They also came without an oil filter. It was equipped with a lever connected to a screen inside the engine that when turned filtered the impurities from the oil. Remove the screen and give it a clean at every oil change. Simple but effective.
    For anyone seriously interested in this boat John Vigor wrote a chapter on this one in his book “Twenty Small Sailboats toTake You Anywhere”. Even absent of any interest in his vessel Vigor’s book is still a good read.

    This boat at 25' seems much like mine. My Paceship P2-20 is 19' 3" bow to stern but the rudder brings it up to 20'. My cabin is open so the salon and v-berth are all in sight. I've go a "hidden" chemical head (under the middle aft end of the v-berth). No inboard engine but a reliable 4hp Evenrude outboard. My cockpit sure looks bigger than this boat. Inside there's space for a small stove (which I have, but have not installed) and the boat came with a sink and ~ 3 gallon water reservoir. My boat has the ability to sleep 4. It's easily trailerable, with its retractable keel. And I almost think that if you chopped off the the canoe stern, this boat could be a very similar length.
    My thought about blue water sailing with a boat in the 20' range is that rough seas - which can be encountered - could include swells half as high as your boat is long! And in bad weather - which can come along unexpectedly - it's not going to be fun piloting this boat outside with no protection from the wind and rain.
    Oh, and not only do you need a replacement mast there's all the rigging that needs to be recreated (unless that has survived?). Having said all that, I think this boat was interesting too. : - ) Scott W PS - Lin Pardey IS short. I saw her briefly at the US Sailboat Show myself.

    Kind of funny reading so many comments comparing this boat with light weekend boats or even day sailers. Pacific Seacraft boats are oceangoing vessels with the reputation for being built like the proverbial brick shithouse. Blue water cruising on such a small vessel is not going to be most people's cup of tea, but this boat will certainly do it.
    As for being trailerable, while it's technically true it's not something you would want to do on a regular basis. Maybe to launch at the beginning of the season and pull it out at the end to save on moorage, etc, or to make that rare special trip to a different coast like the Hawaii trip mentioned in the video. Otherwise the trailer needed for a full keeled vessel like that is going to be much taller than what most people would expect, and it's going to be difficult to launch or retrieve on a normal boat ramp without unhooking the trailer and using a long cable. Add the weight of the trailer to the already heavy displacement, and assuming you're going to be loading it with sufficient stores and gear for a voyage, will rule out most tow vehicles. Figure on a minimum full size half ton pickup truck to tow safely. A 3/4 ton would be better.

    There's a couple of Pacific Seacraft Flikas 20s with bowsprit in my marina. They have about 5'9" headroom and with their dodgers they have stand up headroom for 6 footers in the companionway. They are great weekend or short trip cruisers, but tough and able enough to cross an ocean.

  • @todddunn945
    @todddunn945 4 года назад

    If you want standing headroom, then take a look at a Pacific Seacraft Flicka (20') or Dana (24'). Both are very capable boats with more usable interiors than the PSC 25. In addition both the Flicka and Dana are trailerable although the Dana at 8'7" is one inch too wide to avoid permits. A Flicka can be found quite cheaply, but the Dana tends to be a bit more pricey. Another similar boat to consider would be the Cape Dory 25D (not the 25).

    Having built and owned a Seawing 43' double ender, I'd just like to point out that you can deduct about three feet from the length of a double ended boat which is pretty much just "lost space" at the transom. This 25' PSC has about the same interior and deck space as a typical 23' flat transom boat, and the flat transom boats often have wider cockpits for more comfort.

      As a Pacific Seacraft Orion owner I would like to fill you in on some PS insider info. Pacific Seacraft built great boats! And now under different owners on the East Coast continues to build very expensive great boats. PS used 3 designers in its production. Bruce Bingham did the Flica. Henry Mohrschladt a former owner of the company did the 25’, the boat you toured, the Orion 27’ my boat and the Mariah 31'. All of the other boats were designed by Bill Crealock. Without a doubt the most successful by all measures are the Crealock boats. Those are the boats that continue to be built today new and continue to be in demand world wide used. My suggestion is if you are going to invest a lot of work and money in restoring and refitting a PS boat pick a Crealock designed boat. You will get the best designs and the best return on your investment.
      On other topics the 25 is way under canvased the S.A./Displacement 12.88 will be slow in anything less than strong winds. Perhaps needing a new mast is a great opportunity to redesign the sailplan and add some area? Ben S/V Dawn

Without a doubt the most successful by all measures are the Crealock boats. Those are the boats that continue to be built today new and continue to be in demand world wide used. I love it but I'd need to heighten the cabin, at 6'2" I wouldn't mind rubbing but I'm sure this would kink my neck in short order.

    Gut the cabin, cut all core out of deck, hire cabinet maker and buy new teal, install new diesel,spray awlgrip all around, used mast and new sails if u do it will come around 30 k. Hire out you will come in around 50 to 75 k depending on who gives the best talk.

    • @LearningtheLines
      @LearningtheLines  4 года назад

      Yeah, I think 30k to DIY the whole rebuild is a reasonable bet. You'd have a hell of a boat for that price! Most Pacific Seacrafts sell for more than that.

      Learning the Lines Very true. They r incredible boat and I think accidental sailing girl is restoring one. I circumnavigated twice on a Pearson vanguard 32’ full keel Philip Rhodes hull. I’ve been a marine surveyor for 46 yrs and have not found a better boat than the vanguard. Up north u can get a used one in good condition for around 8 k and I think this would be the perfect boat for u guys. I have sailed over 150 different boats and nothing compares to the vanguard. I was in 30’ seas in 1976 on a vanguard close Pitcarin island where fletcher christian lived after the mutiny. My buddy companion boat was a west sail 42 and he was dismansted in this same storm I was in.

    I'm afraid you guys are free-associating this boat too much with the later Pacific Seacrafts such as the Flicka 20 and the Dana 24. Those were the boats that gained the well-deserved reputation as pocket world cruisers. The PS 25 was a predecessor to those and while the build quality is still quite good on the PS 25, it's from an earlier stage of design development and not as far along the evolutionary path as the later models mentioned above. Of course, a 30 year old Dana 24 goes for $50K, but that illustrates my point. And you get standing head room in the Dana 24.
