I want to thank you sweet young ladies, for your reaction to the Green Mile. You two are the ONLY reactors I have watched that did the Green Mile that actually showed ALL of the lines that I think were the really important ones in this movie, most reactors either skip them, or show only one or two. NONE of them ever showed the last 3 in the ending, when Paul says he thinks about all the people he's lost, and then the line: "the thing that keeps me up most nights, if he can make a mouse live so long, how much longer do I have?" (THAT is the line that MOST reactors totally leave out) and "Sometimes the Green Mile seems so long." The other one that most leave out is when John Coffey explains WHY he wants to die, wants it to be over.....mainly where he says "I'M TIRED OF PEOPLE BEING UGLY TO EACH OTHER" and "IT"S LIKE PIECES OF GLASS IN MY HEAD" THANK YOU AGAIN for including those important (and impactful) lines in your reaction. This is one of my FAVORITE movies. RIP Michael Duncan Clark.

@@Echo4Bravo I think that Tom Hanks really showed the agony he felt at not being able to do anything. Regardless of whether there is a god to judge him, he is judging himself very harshly. It makes me cry whenever I see it.
@@Echo4Bravo The part that gets me most is the hopelessness when he contemplates how much longer he might live if Mr Jingles has already lived over 60 years. At that point you realise that the film was a horror story all along and he is in perpetual suffering much like John Coffey was.
Did you notice the guy Paul (Tom Hanks) was speaking with at one point was Gary Sinise who played with Tom Hanks as "Lt. Dan Taylor" in the movie Forest Gump?
From what I've read about the movie, the Green Mile was inspired by the case of George Stinney in 1944, when 2 young girls were killed. George Stinney was the youngest person to ever get the electric chair, being only 14. He was so small, they had to stack books for him to sit on to be tall enough. His arrest, trial and execution happened all in the same year, and only years later was it investigated further and found that the confession they got from him was most likely coerced and that his 6th amendment had been violated. They gave John a childlike innocence to reflect the innocence and youth of Stinney, rather than making John, 14 himself (likely also for creative reasons that suited the more fictitious elements of the story)
One additional point to keep in mind. I saw another commenter (Poor Finian) mention in a different reaction that a urinary tract infection had no cure in the 1930s, so even going to the doctor probably wouldn't help much. The first antibiotic, penicillin, was only discovered in 1928 and wasn't used on a patient in the U.S. until 1942. RIP Michael Clarke Duncan. An astounding performance. I had one when I was a 17yrs old and first started getting busy in the sack. So I had no idea what was wrong with me. I told my girlfriend, she started crying. I thought it might be an STD. I was afraid to tell my parents or anyone. I rode that pain out for a week. It is absolutely brutal. Truly like pissing razor blades. The pain got so bad that I literally fainted one morning while going to the bathroom and that's when I finally caved and told my Dad.
For anyone that needs diy relief.. put bicarbonate of soda in a glass with some water.. add lemon juice and when it stops fizzing drink it. It’s disgusting but it helps. Bicarb works okay on its own if you don’t have lemon juice (bottled or fresh) but with the juice is better. There’s science behind it but I’m too lazy to google

Ryl is knocking this one out of the PARK, throughout the whole movie she's been two steps ahead on every development. Lost track of how many times I laughed and muttered to myself, "yep, that's exactly right, she's got it." Looking forward to watching your other stuff! This movie is one of the most special, indescribable movies. One of the few Titan examples of straight magical realism in hollywood, it's a genre they tend to keep at a distance because it's so darn difficult to do correctly.

That's something that took me almost 20 years to realize. No one really interfered when John (or the Power that acts through John) when he resolved to take action. They just sort of stand back. Even Percy holds he mouth open in accordance with John's will. The only exception is when he tells Paul to stop feeling bad and blaming himself, "Just quit on it!" Paul really should have, because if John had wanted a different outcome he could have made it happen. Paul owes no atonement. He's a good man.❤❤

That's one other thing that John Coffey shares in common with Jesus Christ besides their initials, healing powers, their many scars and dying for the sins of another. There are examples of both men just essentially saying "This is how it's gonna be." and walking away without anyone trying to stop them. John Coffey is clearly, to me anyway, meant as a miraculous and messianic figure.

1. YOU WILL CRY 2. Dabbs Greer/old Paul was ill during production, so his part was done later. He also played Reverend Alden on "Little House on the Prairie". 3. Hammersmith was not a good lawyer. (most likely a racial thing. It was 1935.) 4. In the book King briefly covers why the Chief and Del are on death row. 5. This movie was nominated for Best Supporting Actor (MCD)😇 and Best Cast but unfortunately neither won.😭😭 6. Players in other King adaptations: Jeffery DeMunn: Shawshank Redemption, The Mist, Storm of the Century and William Sadler: Shawshank Redemption, The Mist. David Morse: The Langoliers. Patricia Clarkson played Margarat White in King's remake of Carrie". Needless to say, it was a much different part. 7. Goof: Electricity makes the body contract. Del wouldn't be able to scream. I know it' just for the movie because of the length of the execution scene. 8. IRL James Cromwell is a vegan and didn't want to grill meat for the BBQ scene but was told that in 1935 people actually ate meat so he agreed to have some on the grill. 9. RE Percy: Couldn't happen to a nicer guy. KARMA's a Bitch. BTW Kudos to Doug Hutchison for the great job of playing Percy.👌EVERYONE hates him. 10. John also rescues the other patients at Briar Ridge. 11. IRL both David Morse and James Cromwell are about the same height as Michael Clark Duncan (RIP). They used planks, a small bed and smaller chair along with trick photography to make John taller. 12 The scene where John takes Mr. Jingles for safe keeping before Del's execution, they used a real mouse, and it pooped on Paul's shoulder, and he brushed it off. 13. Now we know what the "day old is fine" dry toast is for. 14 EVERYBODY cries and has to take time to reflect. Congratulations you just experienced. the GREATEST MOVIE EVER. It's sad when you think about it that we're all walking our own Green Mile, but walking with that knowledge hopefully makes us enjoy and cherish the gift we've been given. To God be the glory. Like Green Mile there's another Stephen King story made into a great film, "The Shawshank Redemption" (1994) by the same director Frank Darabont. An awesome movie starring Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins, also about prison you may like better.

This movie takes place primarily in the 1930s, antibiotics like penicillin weren't widely available until the 1940s. So Paul would probably just have been admitted to a hospital for a while while they let out run its course

I rate this movie as my favorite (or in my top 3 at least) because of the story, the acting, and the emotional impact that it has. I'm a big fan of Stephen King and have read many of his books and short stories. He's an incredibly gifted and prolific author. For something different based on a Stephen King novel (novella) please watch The Shawshank Redemption. It's an amazing movie as well. Keep up the great work both of you!
One of the messages I wish people would take away from this movie is the fact Percy, with all his cruelty, wanted to work in a mental health facility. Why do you think this is? For the potential of abuse of helpless, mentally vulnerable people. I've seen a lot of mental illness in my family, and this is a real and scary reality. There are a lot of predators that put themselves in the position of caregivers so they can give anything but care to the people dependent on them. It always kind of bothered me that they were fine putting Percy in that job field knowing exactly what he was. As long as they didn't have to see it. It's kind of the attitude people take with the mentally ill, homeless in general 😡
Percy had sexual obsessions, was cruel to animals, and an overprotective aunt. Put him in a place with unprotected vulnerable people and the outcome would be predictably bad.
Just saw your reaction.. one thing.. it may have been pointed out elsewhere in comments, but.. "John didn't deserve this.." John wanted his life to end. You touched on it a bit when you wondered how long John had lived.. he's likely centuries old. Combining the "empathic" and telepathic qualities John displayed, his comment that "it's like this all over the world," and "it's like shards of glass inside my head." Humanities disregard for fellow humans through murder, war, rape, etc. John "felt" the weight of "humanities inhumanity towards humans." And he was tired of it. Knew he'd always have to feel that, and I believe, what he meant by telling Paul, "tell The Father it was a kindness you done." Paul, and the rest of them were "putting John out of his misery." Beautiful, gut-wrenching movie. I saw it in the theater when it was first released. I have it on DVD. I watch it every now and then because the writing is excellent, the acting is excellent, and despite my being an atheist, a powerful film.
Y’all just remember, this took place in 1935… it was a different world back in those days. Evidence wasn’t as easily proven (good or bad) back then, unfortunately!

One thing to remember is that life ramps up from childhood until 35, then ramps down until death. I have learned this the hard way. At 62 I became disabled, slowly. I’m 65 and my abilities decline month by month. It’s important to appreciate your health while you have it. ❤ Sometimes the green mile seems so long.
If only, sadly... Children wouldn't die of leukemia or other illnesses - just barely born - if age had so much to do with it. Far too many people experience horrible things far to young, and far too many die from them. Just treasure every day you have. That is all we can do. The rest might not be in our hands.

A few things: This is one of the best book-to-screen adaptations ever. This is simply a fantastic movie- from the writing, acting, cinematography, direction, and editing. Every actor in this film doesn't ever waste space. Every performer gives dimension to their character. If you need a cathartic ugly-cry, this is the film to get you there.
Clicked on this one randomly and enjoyed your reaction. Nice reaction guys, you caught a ton of the great things about the film and glad you talked through what happened with what the Big Guy did with the tumor, 2 bad guys got taken off the board, 2 evil men in their own way and beyond rehabilitation. I think on my 3rd watch of this movie a dark thought came to mind: Had Percy been allowed to go on and as normal, and transfer to the Briar Asylum, I thought about all of the untold heinous acts and terror Percy could have done to the patients(and even the staff) with all that authority... in an asylum where people would be less prone in believing you if Percy got his clutches on you. Can't count on a crew as fine as Tom Hanks guys being there to checking Percy, and they barely could at that. Didn't kill the man, but surely took his deranged mind and power away from the ability to harm others. Grown man so likely Percy was never going to change. That asylum would have been a very dark playground for him. Anywho, wasn't expecting to cry today but this is one story that does it every time😅🤙🏽

Moral: Angels aren't always blond haired, white skinned, women with wings. Angels can come to us in any manner. People automatically saw this big, strong, black man as someone bad. But, those who knew him knew that he was sent from God.
My theory on why the warden let John in: John said he wanted to help. In the Warren's eyes, John was a killer, not a healer. The warden let him in thinking he could put her out of her misery.
Well that doesn't explain why he kept telling John and Paul that he didn't want anyone going in the room. My theory is that among John's lesser known powers is he has a very dominant power of suggestion. When he wants to do something, people don't really try to stop him. Or they simply can't, like Percy.
And hell, most of them aren't even inmates. Most would be patients with non-violent mental disorders or disabilities. So yeah, Percy would basically be bullying Rain Man. What John did to him needed to be done.

If, indeed, Paul had a grown _son_ in 1935, all other factors being equal, he ought to have had grown _grandchildren_ from that son around _1965,_ and grown _great_ grandchildren about _1995._ That's four years before this movie came _out._ So, yes, Elaine was _right_ to be puzzled about just how old Paul _was._

This was the first emotionally touching movie i saw as a kid that got to me. Only when i got older and i rewatched it, i could understand for real. One of my favorite movies
Good points about why John passed the illness onto Percy. One other reason was to keep him from hurting people in general which he certainly would have done at the asylum. I also have a little misgiving about John doing anything harmful at all as it seemed so out of character for him as a very innocent, healing person. But when all is said and done, he seemed to do what would cause the least harm for everyone.
I think that is why John was executed. It was time for him to go back and sit on the right side of his father. God the father said "vengeance is mine" and John, his son overstepped his bounds
Alright technically he did not pass the illness on to Percy he used it as a catalyst to show Percy and get him to punish wild bill because you should notice after he killed billy those came right back out
@@thomasdavis5675 Yes, I just used "illness" as a vague term (bad fruit fly stuff?)for whatever he passed on and that, in the end, it put Percy in the asylum as a patient. With that mentality he belonged there in any case.
Such a beautiful film - it is right up there with Shawshank Redemption - Schindler's List etc one of them films that stays with you and you never forget.

I was 11 years old when I first saw this movie. It was a Thursday back in 2001. I had school the next day but we had the black box on demand channels and this movie came on. When John coffeys execution came on I cried my heart out . My dad came into my too. Worried but when he saw what I was watching he just sat down next to me and hugged me. ..till this day I'm 34 and I still cry like I did when I was 11 when John coffey death comes on.

It's sad when you think about it that we're all walking our own Green Mile, but walking with that knowledge hopefully makes us enjoy and cherish the gift we've been given. To God be the glory. Such amazing storytelling by the goat-Stephen King. I saw this in the theater when it first came out and when the lights came up everyone was crying and we all had a good laugh. I still cry watching this movie. I enjoyed y'alls reactions to this. RIP Michael Clarke Duncan.
Like Green Mile there's another Stephen King story made into a great film, "The Shawshank Redemption" (1994) by the same director Frank Darabont. An awesome movie starring Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins, also about prison you may like better.

This movie takes place primarily in the 1930s, antibiotics like penicillin weren't widely available until the 1940s. So Paul would probably just have been admitted to a hospital for a while while they let out run its course

I rate this movie as my favorite (or in my top 3 at least) because of the story, the acting, and the emotional impact that it has. I'm a big fan of Stephen King and have read many of his books and short stories. He's an incredibly gifted and prolific author. For something different based on a Stephen King novel (novella) please watch The Shawshank Redemption. It's an amazing movie as well. Keep up the great work both of you!

One of the messages I wish people would take away from this movie is the fact Percy, with all his cruelty, wanted to work in a mental health facility. Why do you think this is? For the potential of abuse of helpless, mentally vulnerable people. I've seen a lot of mental illness in my family, and this is a real and scary reality. There are a lot of predators that put themselves in the position of caregivers so they can give anything but care to the people dependent on them. It always kind of bothered me that they were fine putting Percy in that job field knowing exactly what he was. As long as they didn't have to see it. It's kind of the attitude people take with the mentally ill, homeless in general 😡
Percy had sexual obsessions, was cruel to animals, and an overprotective aunt. Put him in a place with unprotected vulnerable people and the outcome would be predictably bad.
Percy would have felt like a kid in a candy store. Plenty of vulnerable people to abuse.

"John didn't deserve this.." John wanted his life to end. You touched on it a bit when you wondered how long John had lived.. he's likely centuries old. Combining the "empathic" and telepathic qualities John displayed, his comment that "it's like this all over the world," and "it's like shards of glass inside my head." Humanities disregard for fellow humans through murder, war, rape, etc. John "felt" the weight of "humanities inhumanity towards humans." And he was tired of it. Knew he'd always have to feel that, and I believe, what he meant by telling Paul, "tell The Father it was a kindness you done." Paul, and the rest of them were "putting John out of his misery."
Beautiful, gut-wrenching movie. I saw it in the theater when it was first released. I have it on DVD. I watch it every now and then because the writing is excellent, the acting is excellent, and despite my being an atheist, a powerful film.

One thing to remember is that life ramps up from childhood until 35, then ramps down until death. I have learned this the hard way. At 62 I became disabled, slowly. I’m 65 and my abilities decline month by month. It’s important to appreciate your health while you have it. ❤

Far too many people experience horrible things far to young, and far too many die from them. Just treasure every day you have. That is all we can do. The rest might not be in our hands.

Bruce suggested Big Mike as John Coffey for Green Mile to its producers. According to his close friends, Big Mike was like his character, a gentle giant.

A few things:
This is one of the best book-to-screen adaptations ever.
This is simply a fantastic movie- from the writing, acting, cinematography, direction, and editing.
Every actor in this film doesn't ever waste space. Every performer gives dimension to their character.
If you need a cathartic ugly-cry, this is the film to get you there.
No matter how many times I've seen this movie, the ending always makes me cry. It's an amazing movie and story.

Nice reaction guys, you caught a ton of the great things about the film and glad you talked through what happened with what the Big Guy did with the tumor, 2 bad guys got taken off the board, 2 evil men in their own way and beyond rehabilitation.
I think on my 3rd watch of this movie a dark thought came to mind:
Had Percy been allowed to go on and as normal, and transfer to the Briar Asylum, I thought about all of the untold heinous acts and terror Percy could have done to the patients(and even the staff) with all that authority... in an asylum where people would be less prone in believing you if Percy got his clutches on you. Can't count on a crew as fine as Tom Hanks guys being there to checking Percy, and they barely could at that. Didn't kill the man, but surely took his deranged mind and power away from the ability to harm others. Grown man so likely Percy was never going to change. That asylum would have been a very dark playground for him.
Anywho, wasn't expecting to cry today but this is one story that does it every time😅🤙🏽

Moral: Angels aren't always blond haired, white skinned, women with wings. Angels can come to us in any manner. People automatically saw this big, strong, black man as someone bad. But, those who knew him knew that he was sent from God.
My theory on why the warden let John in: John said he wanted to help. In the Warren's eyes, John was a killer, not a healer. The warden let him in thinking he could put her out of her misery.
Well that doesn't explain why he kept telling John and Paul that he didn't want anyone going in the room. My theory is that among John's lesser known powers is he has a very dominant power of suggestion. When he wants to do something, people don't really try to stop him. Or they simply can't, like Percy.

Think of the abuse that the inmates of Briar Ridge would have suffered if John hadn't punished him.
And hell, most of them aren't even inmates. Most would be patients with non-violent mental disorders or disabilities.
So yeah, Percy would basically be bullying Rain Man. What John did to him needed to be done.

Let me just add a little information, for context. If, indeed, Paul had a grown _son_ in 1935, all other factors being equal, he ought to have had grown _grandchildren_ from that son around _1965,_ and grown _great_ grandchildren about _1995._ That's four years before this movie came _out._
So, yes, Elaine was _right_ to be puzzled about just how old Paul _was._

Good points about why John passed the illness onto Percy. One other reason was to keep him from hurting people in general which he certainly would have done at the asylum. I also have a little misgiving about John doing anything harmful at all as it seemed so out of character for him as a very innocent, healing person. But when all is said and done, he seemed to do what would cause the least harm for everyone.
I think that is why John was executed. It was time for him to go back and sit on the right side of his father. God the father said "vengeance is mine" and John, his son overstepped his bounds
Alright technically he did not pass the illness on to Percy he used it as a catalyst to show Percy and get him to punish wild bill because you should notice after he killed billy those came right back out
@@thomasdavis5675 Yes, I just used "illness" as a vague term (bad fruit fly stuff?)for whatever he passed on and that, in the end, it put Percy in the asylum as a patient. With that mentality he belonged there in any case.

I was 11 years old when I first saw this movie. It was a Thursday back in 2001. I had school the next day but we had the black box on demand channels and this movie came on. When John coffeys execution came on I cried my heart out . My dad came into my too. Worried but when he saw what I was watching he just sat down next to me and hugged me. ..till this day I'm 34 and I still cry like I did when I was 11 when John coffey death comes on.
