I think they actually said in interviews that they only got one session where they were both present at the same time! So mostly, they didn't see each other either, but they obviously videoed this one :)

I love when animated projects do that. It gives the actors more of an opportunity to work off each other and thus strengthens each actor's performance.
It’s only few animated movies that do that. I’m pretty sure the first movie in disney to do it was Aladdin or The Princess and the frog, did it for the whole movie.

Allison Madrid many voice actors have beginnings in stage. Tom, obviously, was a child West End star, so I know he’s got it in him.

No. In the movie it was just sort of like: "I'll come pick you up, later." "No thanks! Bye!" Or something along those lines. There wasn't the back and forth thing like what they were doing in the video.

I cried when the mom told Ian that their dad fought hard to meet him. After that it was all downhill. 😭😭😭😭😭😭 Lol

I cried when Ian pretend to have a conversation with his dad from the cassette recording. I cried when Barley sacrificed guinevere and I cried at the ending when barley finally got to say good bye to their dad and Ian could only watch. And I cried when told my aunt about this movie that I just watched.

everyone is all over Tom Holland as Ian and here I am loving the wonderful character that is Barley. Pratt did such an amazing job bringing this lovable nerd to life.
I'm much more like Barley but I wish I was Ian. I want to pick a favourite but that's not possible.
@Some random person Yeah for all his faults he was very supportive and a great sibling. On all my rewatches I like seeing it shown throughout the film, it always feels satisfying at the end.
Barley was amazing and Chris Pratt was the perfect fit imo, he brought him to life in such a beautiful way, definitely my favorite in this grand movie

11:09 "A movie that will make you laugh, and will make you cry." Onward will do just that. As soon as I saw it, it became one of my top 5 favorite films.
Yeah, I went back to see it more than once. In 2 weeks I had seen it likely more than I've rewatched anything else in my life.

I love them playing brothers
I like frozen, but I feel like this movie really spoke to me about how much siblings love each other and just now far they are willing to go with each other. As someone with a sister, their relationship is so accurate. At one point, I totally forgot that it was these two voicing them, I actually had to remind myself of that, because they just took me to a magical place that made me forget about everything going on in the world right now
I’ve just finished watching Onward for my second time and I just absolutely love it. I lost my father to brain cancer when I was 12 years old, and watching this movie and finding out this gift that the boys got from their late father made me think “WOW! Just imagine if this staff truly was real I could reborn my dad for the next 24 hours and my younger brother would finally get a chance to meet him. And for us to be a whole family again for just one more day. That would be AMAZING! I love this movie a lot and I can’t wait to watch it more in my future.

@@shylaskye I’m sorry. I wish my dad was still alive. My brother hardly remembers him at all. He just has memories of him laying in his hospital bed in our family room. He doesn’t really have any memories of him doing things with us like my sisters and I do. He was only about to turn 6 years old when he passed away. The only time when he ever thinks about memories of him is if we’re either talking about them or if we show him one of our home videos.

I honestly think they didn't even give them a script. They just told them the story and told them to be themselves.

I really relate to the older brother. My grandpa was dying of cancer in 2015 & I was told to say goodbye, tell him I loved him etc. He was on a hospital bed in my living room, and I was so angry at everything. I saw him in pain and lashed out at everyone for it. Even him. That night, I saw my sister saying goodbye. I remember their hands locked together...I became upset and left upstairs. Put headphones on, got in the bath, and read a book. Hours later, 3am hits and my sis comes into the bathroom crying. "He's gone." And to this day, I hate myself for not saying goodbye. I'm so angry and regretful. That night, I realized that this grief will never end. I still have living family members....I'm going to face this numerous times. And I have. But last weekend I confessed this to a coworker and she said "I'm sure your grandpa forgives you." I cried. That night I told my sis about it. Next week in I watch this movie.
And that moment when the older brother says his feelings on seeing his dad sick, and his regrets for not saying goodbye. And how he then got to finally do so in the end...it was like my grandpa sent a sign to me that he forgives me. And I cried so hard, and I'm now crying again😅. I feel a little bit better though. Like it was meant to tell me to move on and be happier.
Samie Smiles you got this. Some random girl sends her love. I can’t exactly relate, but I understand the grief and the rage and the hopelessness of knowing you’ll never forgive yourself. And that’s when you’re on the path to forgiving yourself. I agree with your coworker. I’m sure your grandpa forgives you.
2 years later I watched the film, and I cried, I laughed and had a wonderful trip with these two. Pixar is doing such a wonderful job with recent films. I am in awe of the strorytelling.

I’ve seen some behind the scenes where they do that for some movies. Not sure when that process is, maybe it’s later on, and this is earlier?
Hey! Im an Animation student. From what I know, e animate to the sound that we are given, so recording comes first way before the animation process, then we animate the models to line up perfectly with what is being said. I think there might be storyboards/an animatic that the voice actors/director can look at- which illustrate the scene and what's happening. I believe what you must have seen could have been when dubs have to be created in another language for movies and shows.

It is different for dubs. For things animated in a different language, the VA’s will do it to the animation. But if it is in the original language the VA-ing comes first.
Yeah you're definitely thinking when a foreign film is dubbed in another language. Like anime for instance.
I was at an anime convention at stoney brook college 2456r3 years ago and had the pleasure of sitting in on a work shop where they showed how they do American voice actor dubbing to original Japanese anime cartoons.
Yes they have to look at the screen with the anime clip scene they're dubbing as they're voice acting it out into the mic. They even get a time stamp on their scripts of when to start which is synced on the screen with the scene and have to fit it into the already made animation.
So alot of dialogue when dubbing isn't always the EXACT translation because they're fitting it into an already animated series/film. Also they tend to add stuff in (extra lines or sounds) when it's not focused on the character's mouth moving.
Completely different process with Pixar as they film the voice actors who are just doing this off a script in a sound booth, with a director/ writer etc to coach them/ feed them the scene. They often use the footage of their own facial expressions and gestures to add into the characters finished animation.
Yes alot of times voice actors don't do stuff in the same room (like tom admitted he hadn't met Will Smith until after the movie was finished. Another voice acting one he did)
But this arrangement worked so well and probably made it even better because they have that brotherly banter relationship as RL work colleagues and friends. Was awesome to see all this 🙂
