Did this job in London for eight months way back in 1990 and loved it. The cycling was addictive - after about 300 miles a week I would go out for rides on my days off. These days I got a puncture five months ago which I haven't got round to sorting out.....

I also would think about how many times I almost died before going to sleep each night. Seems to be pretty common in the messenger community.

Hey, all, just wanted to tell that i feel a little ashamed, watching this. As if i'm unfairly entitled sort of. I live in Moscow, and the only thing in my life that is worse than in that of a typical NYC bike messenger is the weather. Spent yet another hour last night for taking my bike to the shower.
On the other hand, we don't get that much stress on the street at all. The worst confrontation i've ever had was a douche in a white range rover who tried jumping in front of me cause he thought i scratched him (maybe i did). Cops don't pay no attention on us. 99% of motorist when they see us try to give way or smtn. At reds i have a habit of touching the roof of one of the cars in the front row just to stay upright as i'm waiting. Only got yelled at twice in my life for that. Never noticed a nyc biker do that in any of the videos. Oh, and if we do get hit (i got once this summer), than you don't pay for hospital treatment, state healthcare is free - we still have socialism in that area.
You guys were an inspiration for the lot of us even before Premium Rush, but if we look closer at ourselves, we have it so much better here. I'm not even a messenger, i just ride my bike to get across the city.
Anyways, best of luck to ya all guys!!

I could see some reasons why bike messengers won't
      1. Some buildings require you to remove helmet, putting on and off will lose you precious seconds
      2. Every bit of gram counts. Might not be huge when you are only delivering envelopes but once you put kilos on your back that will slow you down.
Worked as a bike messenger but I always wear my helmet.

it looks like a fixie. you can buy new fixies. Or some people take older road bikes, remove the shifter cables, the derailleurs, brake levers, and brake cables and then replace the rear cassettes or cogs with something fixed. don't know the technical term for the part on fixies that connects to the rear hub. bike shops could help though. Don't go to reality bikes though

I used to be a bike messenger in WDC back in the late 80s, early 90s. It paid for a year in Germany and six months in London. It really was a lifestyle more than a job. Ten hours on the bike, dodging cars and pedestrians, then having to deal with the assholes that were capitol hill and their cronies. Day over and a couple of bumpers with friends on Dupont Circle, then back home for a shower and a couple of more beers while the water sluiced the day off of you. Repeat. Few times have I felt so alive.

So normally fixed gear bikes are only used for indoor track competitions. The front wheel is always smaller in diameter than the wheel in the back. You will see in the USA bike carriers sometimes convert the fixed gear bike into a gear bike still with a fixed pion. Then shifting is done by holding the pedals still while riding and using the riders wheight so that a counter weight shifts in position. Peculiar...

cars are actually what makes our day-to-day life easier. a lot of people would've to ask someone else to do their errands because they are simply not capable of using a bicycle. it's not the cars, it's the people driving them who make mistakes sometimes

It's a dangerous job, so I'm not going to wear a helmet, tool.

    • @AceSkates
      @AceSkates 9 лет назад +4

Helmet isn't going to help if you're hit by a truck or a car, helmets are great if you fall or if you crash into something, but most cycling fatalities are caused by snapped spines, crushed torso, or impacts so great that a helmet won't save your head.
Helmets are great for off-road, or if you fall off, that's about it.
I wear one, but I know it's not gonna save my life if is a 20tonne truck doesn't check their mirrors before changing lanes, or if a car runs a red light or skips a stop sign and plows into me.

Well of course it won't help if you get hit by a lorry. But if you swerve to avoid a pedestrian, catch your wheel in a drain etc... and fall, you could potentially hit your head and die, from what is essentially a minor crash.
When driving you don't put a seatbelt on to protect from being hit head on at 70 mph by a massive truck. You do it to help protect yourself from a minor crash at 30, which might kill you without it.

+Adam Payne unbeknownst to you, I have had instances where had I of been wearing a helmet my head Would have made contact...but having those 2 inches of space gave me what i needed to catch myself before letting my head hit the ground without a helmet on...also there are more injuries every year from people wearing helmets than injuries prevented by wearing helmets. It may seem light, but after 10 hours a day, a helmet can put great strain on your neck and chest. I have also had friends whose lives had been spared because they weren't wearing a seatbelt and were ejected from the car just before the car careens into a pole. Had they been wearing a seatbelt they would not be alive today....it's all a choice, make yours..don't tell others how to make theirs...last but not least..when people put on all the hockey gear, they feel invincible as though they could ride into a brick wall and not get hurt....pads do little when the car is driving over you...better to rely on your smarts than your equipment.

+Adam Payne what kind of crash occurs at 30? Of course a seat belt can protect you if you're going like 100kph and airbags are there. These are just two different things, helmets won't protect your face, only your brain, considering you'd ever hit your brain in a bike accident which is something very rare since you'll most likely in every single case hit your face (worst case scenario)

Albeit I insist on wearing a helmet if I am in a race, or if there are adolescents under the age of 18 as per the highway traffic act. A helmet is also implied when people are doing dirt jumps or other extreme sports.

I cycle to work 30 km everyday. This guy has no helmet and a shitty bike which has not breaks on it and he rides through red lights. Please I love cycling myself but you have to respect the cars and they will respect you.

I agree with the bucket thing saved testing how hard my head a few times now. As for the bike thing that's not a bad whip for work. Yes I use a front brake on my ride, we have hills here I like to bleed speed and save tread good tires aren't cheep. But my front brake will not stop any one that's where strong legs and mad skills come in. If you can't stop your self with just using your legs then you have business being on a track bike in traffic. Speaking of business I've have yet had a dispatcher or client tell me to take my time when court clerk at 111 n Calvert is going home at 4:28pm and I have only 10 minute or less to get there form the time the pic is ready to go still nice and warm from the copier and the ink on the check to the clerk is wet and that applies to most bike work. Enjoy your little ride in and out of peanut shop while the professionals make a living doing what we love. Thank you for letting me vent.

Some cars won’t respect you for your very existence on the road. Seeing someone exercise like this can cause resentment for drivers. They think they’re real big when they just put down their foot down harder to accelerate while not giving you space to appeal to their fragile ego of asserting dominance on the road.
The problem isn’t about drivers, it’s about a certain kind of person who drives. They’ll never respect cyclist.

Roland Lundall there are two trains of thought ‘gears are for queers’ and ‘gears not tears’. You only get to pick for yourself. Of course there is always the ‘more beers less gears’ crew as well. Speaking for myself only I can say my fixed gear is WAY more fun to ride than any of my geared bikes. Im not skilled enough to ride ‘brakeless’ on my fixed gear and I use a helmet as well. If you had any significant experience on a fixed gear then you would be qualified to offer an intelligent and INFORMED opinion. Personally I average faster times on my fixed gear 49:15 than on my Specialized Allez Elite. Steel frame fixed faster than AL Allez with gears. Same rider same route. Hell of a lot more fun to boot. If you know ‘you know’.
