Rick Alan Ross is a private consultant, lecturer, and cult intervention specialist. He began his work as an anti-cult activist and community organizer in 1982.
Ross first became concerned about controversial groups and movements in response to a radical religious group that had covertly targeted his grandmother’s nursing home. Since that time he has raised awareness about cults and facilitated more than five hundred interventions to rescue people from cultic situations.
Ross is one of the leading experts on cults in the world today.
He has consulted with the FBI, the BATF, and various other law enforcement agencies, as well as the governments of Israel and China, on the subject of cults.
Ross has been qualified, accepted and testified as an expert court witness in eleven different states within the United States including US Federal court. He has worked as an expert analyst for CBS News, CBC of Canada, as well as Nippon and Asahi in Japan.
Ross has lectured at more than 30 universities and colleges including the University of Chicago, Dickinson College, Carnegie Mellon, Baylor, Wuhan University of China, Assumption University of Thailand and the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. He has also been published within peer-reviewed academic journals on the topic of cults.
Regarding his cult intervention work Ross states that historically about 75 percent of the people that he conducts an intervention with decide to leave the group by the end of such an effort. He has done interventions across the United States and around the world. Ross did two successful interventions with the notorious Branch Davidians led by self-styled messiah David Koresh.
Ross has appeared in numerous documentaries and has been interviewed and quoted in media all over the world.

The TM technique actually is beneficial. Just don't get further involved in the advanced programme or Yogic flying crap. Use the meditation technique for your wellbeing will do.

I do like the practice of mantra meditation. But... When someone makes sensational claims and then gets angry and stops the interview because he is asked about those claims, that is a pretty big red flag that something ain't right.

Whenever big egos get involved, something as simple and good as meditation is tainted. Just like what the Church did to Jesus' teachings.....You may not like your driving teacher, but you still like driving..

I went to an introductory session on TM tonight, the man running it spoke for about an hour, we watched a video of people who practise TM, they all spoke very highly of it's many benefits, i got the impression i was being sold a product, then right at the end he mentioned the course fees, it was way more than i could afford, so i left, i guess i had a lucky escape, judging by this video

My friend if some Guru, monk ( as the person belongs to my religion ) or whatever you call him, ask for money, you can consider him fraud directly. As in religion, meditation is free. It doesn't require money to get relief from stress. Never go for them, they're just looting money.

Same! I attended an Introduction session yesterday. I always always listen to my Intuition and yesterday I had an uneasy feeling that I couldn't brush off. I never ignore my feelings and I know through those feelings the Universe is trying to tell me something... So today I've decided I won't be enrolling myself into the TM classes.

"My concern is that for some folks TM has been a nightmare the organization simply ignores. [Imagine taking out a $3000 loan to pay for a TM course and then discovering that doing TM gave you intense headaches and the checking made things worse ... and you still owed the bank $3000.]
Mahesh wanted money and used, or do I mean sacrificed, people to get it. Ostensibly, he needed a lot of money to sustain his wonderful organization that is/was helping so many (well, that's what he claimed).
We have long noted that the organization that teaches TM is mostly on its own to be self-sustaining (happily government funding has been generous in curious ways) while the Shrivastava family (Mahesh's relatives) seems to have the money.
What has also been noted is that it is unclear what they do with that money."
This comment belongs to an ex teacher of TM.

Hi Paul, sorry you have had a bad experience. I do think the price is too high. I paid $75 to learn TM in 1977. and $$200 for advanced technique. Then $3000 for the sidhis. CIC 3...........nothing but good has ever come out of my experiences using TM and being at MIU for quite a while.
      Everyone's experiences are different.

Did TM back in the day. You can definitely meditate by focusing on a sound based mantra. MMY was a master of incomprehensible circular nonsense and the technique seemed to be to lull people into a stupefied state where they just got tired of trying to understand what he was saying and either signed up for the program or walked out the door. Preying on the vulnerable and desperate I would have described it.
You can learn to meditate with other traditions without being taken to the cleaners and nobody tries to create false mystery. TM might work for some people but if you haven't tried it, don't bother and move on to Zen, Vipassana or whatever tickles your fancy.

When TM first came out to the world in the 1960’s the promise was if you practiced TM for 7 years you would attain Cosmic Consciousness. Anyone or anybody, the only requirement would be you must practice twice a day for 7 years. That should have been a red flag right there. Of course, it never happened and even loyal TM instructors who were with the movement over 20 years never attained it. I heard this from former TM instructors who had left the movement on the radio say as much. Another problem is; not everyone is cut out for TM. It happens to be a very powerful technique when performed correctly/religiously and if you’re not completely mentally stable you will not be able to control the attained results. When all the celebrities flocked to the Maharishi back in the sixties he was accused of sexual assault on one of the actresses and the Beatles, specifically confronted him about it. I heard John Lennon recall the incident in an interview and they promptly left the movement.

There are a lot of fake reviews glorifying TM. TM might actually be a good technique. But it's not magical in any way to require paying $1000 up front to learn. You can also feel awesome doing 30 minutes per day of full body gym workout, plus you will have a better body than people who do TM. But I guess most people are lazy, they want the bliss without the pain. Go ahead and pay $1000 sucker.

What most folks don't know about the maharishi is he's a big real estate investor. According to the United Kingdom's Guardian newspaper, the maharishi's combined real-estate and business holdings total out at $3.6 billion. These days, the maharishi presides over a corporate empire Indian sources have estimated to be worth more than $5 billion -- a sort of Wal-Mart of the spirit, encompassing extensive land holdings in India, hotels in Europe, and publishing houses in the United States.
