If you want to learn more about the psychology behind personality tests, I would really recommend Hua and Zhou's paper - their study demonstrates the links between the Barnum effect susceptibility, ego identity and the mental/physical wellbeing of adolescents with MBTI usage as well as providing a lot of insight into pseudosciences. Hello, maybe you won't see this, but I had to say it anyway. MBTI is deeper than just 16p. The people that bash it don't do their research or only do it surface level and bring the 16p form of MBTI. This is actually infuriating and sad, and I'm sick of it. It's always the "MBTI is bad, how dare you put people in a box" thing and never the fact that it's for understanding yourself and others. While I agree that it shouldn't be used to hire people, it just sounds like you're on the hate train. Sorry if I offended you. You don't actually have to care about this, it's just my opinion.

As a nerd in the cognitive functions and the whole personality test shenanigans, Limiting yourself to the four letter personality type you got defeats the purpose of...having a personality. Being human is complex and can't be encapsuled so easily. I think MBTI nowadays is best used for fun stuff like dissecting fictional characters because they usually are fixed with a personality to fit in a role inside the story.
Doing so with a human just feels like you're turning someone into a character inside a box.

I’m not sure if I can speak for all but most people that took the MBTI test doesn’t take it that seriously. It’s more like a “you might have these tendencies” we can check ourselves with.
It’s very well known that the test results change very often and can help in social situations by basically telling people “im the more emotional type” or “im not mad/tired, just shy” without having to say any personal stuff.
It’s pretty neat as long as you understand its limitations

Though I agree, I do think it’s a good starting point and (even though I haven’t finished the video) it makes sense in conformity and unity cultures that these would become popular for figuring out who one is outside their cultures preferred personalities. As with everything; these should be taken in moderation and with skepticism

MBTI is just astrology for business majors. Personality is far more complex than any test can meaningfully measure. Don't get fooled into adopting it as a way of viewing yourself and others
Also, if it helps you to shake off its influence, Carl Jung (the Swiss psychiatrist who founded personality testing as we see it now) also believed that no personality could be measured with such crude instruments

I agree. At most, if we don't take it as completely correct and as a way to compare ourselves to it, we can get an idea of our habits and tendencies. But we also need to observe ourselves and self reflect instead of something else doing it for us
And the thing is true personality tests also test the veracity of your answers. This mbti test is only around 100 questions and take your answers as facts, very easy to manipulate
It does though have measurable correlation with the Big-5 and HEXACO used in actual psychology, unlike say the Western and Chinese zodiacs which can be better explained by the worldly experiences of a cohort who just happen to be born that year or in that stage in the academic calendar.

Discovering MBTI during adolescence was crucial for me in developing a sense of identity. As an adult though, I've realized personality does change somewhat and you can't take the MBTI as gospel. It was just a good starting point to figuring out who you are.

Yes! I've been thinking this exact same thing myself. Like ffs people, any kinds of tests are not set in stone nor are they 100% accurate. Stop taking everything, even already published academic articles which have been peer reviwed as a gospel. Think for yourself.
There's also a lot more to the lore than the basic test descriptions. There's the cognitive functions, the "four sides" concept (in which less common functions can front in certain situations). It's a lot more complex than just "one solid type".
It's a silly test, because it's dependent entirely on your existing self image. It just confirms what you already think about yourself and frames it back to you as a revelation.
This is why whenever someone (I'm in the UK) asks me to take the test, it comes out different *because it depends on my mood and thus self image at the time*

korea has a tendency to take things too far. i wonder how much they're going to let feminism ruin their country even more.
I swear koreans are being like that wannabe kid who tries too hard to bring back a trend thats already died a decade ago... I remember in lates 2010s people were doing this tests in school for fun, but now due to kwave its all over again and its funny how they take it all so seriously.. for americans it's astrology, for koreans its mbti. Just another way to put people in boxes and make assumptions on them.
All the personality type nerds know that mbti is shit, and learning cognitive functions provides more nuance. At least it acknowledges that people cannot simply be introverts or extroverts, it's always tied to a perceiving and judging function. You are not a T or an F, an S or an N, you're capable of all of it. It's just a matter of which one is extroverted and introverted, what axis you prioritize, and in what order. I'm not claiming this is the 'real' thing that can define who you are, but it is definitely more helpful in understanding bits and pieces of your behavior compared to mbti that merely relies on stereotypes. Either way, this whole thing shouldn't be used by corporations to hire or dismiss certain type of people, that's just dumb.
MBTI itself isnt a bad thing. It's the fact that people take the assesements too literally. My motto for most things in life is to take everything with a grain of salt. I'd recommend this for everybody else as well...
The problem is people never get into cognitive functions because, just as this video presents, they keep showing the damn 16personalities test. When... the site itself says it's not MBTI in it's theory section!! [It's actually akin to OCEAN, though still a mockery of it...] It's incredibly frustrating. Cognitive Functions are not as shallow or strict as everything presents MBTI to be. East Asia is such a bad driver of this.
@@SoggycereaI16p MBTI sucks and it resulted in the Astrology Big Five edition that became popular, while most people don't even know what are cognitive functions or maybe even read anything that Carl Jung ever wrote except maybe the shadow concept. At the same time i think that most people wouldn't understand the Function system or just not have patience to understand it so i kind of get how 16p became more popular.
I think the problem with psychology at large is that it's trying to explain how it works; the most complicated known computer which logic structure we don't know and we may never be able to replicate, while not having any means to objectively measure what is happening inside it.
Therefore, having a monkey randomly hit one of 16 buttons would be just as accurate as MBTI, and so is entire psychology. It's just a monkey sitting in front of more buttons.

I mean, I guess I can see the value in asking as a sort of ice breaker, the problem is in taking it too seriously. I remember taking the MBTI for a career counseling class. After we calculated our results, the teacher told us to take about ten minutes to read all of the adjacent descriptions as well and select the one that we _believed_ fit us better. Her reasoning being that while the MBTI had some value, it wasn't flawless and despite our results, we might actually feel that we belonged to a different category. I feel like this makes more sense to me. Rather then having it assigned by some test, you select it. While people don't necessarily have a 100% accurate perception of themselves, I do feel like it says something about you based on which you end up selecting. None of the descriptions were especially negative or positive, so picking your 'personality' sort of suggests what you value in yourself, how you _want_ to be even if its not necessarily how you _are._
Its like horoscopes. I think they are utter nonsense (I see no reason why the position of the stars when you were born would have any effect on who you are), but asking people what they identify with more _does_ tell you a lot about them. Like asking if someone is a dog or a cat person. If they are a dog person then you might assume they are more outgoing and friendly, perhaps better at keeping to a schedule because those are the kinds of traits that dogs most demand. But, if they are more of a cat person then you might ascertain that maybe they prefer to sit inside and watch TV or read a book because cats better facilitate that kind of lifestyle. Its not perfect, but as a quick way of getting a feel for a person, I feel like there's _some_ merit.
Basically, I feel like there's more value in how we define or describe _ourselves_ even if we are a little biased versus the results of some test (or the alignment of the stars). Things like horoscopes or the MBTI can be a medium _for_ that description, but they should not be treated as prescriptive or gospel.

I love how you put this! I try to think of these assessments as more of a time to reflect on how you see yourself (even just in that moment/context/situation) and not as a diagnosis of who you are innately.

As an MBTI nerd, that is exactly how you should see MBTI - it's NOT A TEST, it's a typology, and the only way to find the personality that fits you the best is by learning about it and being honest to yourself. The point is to gain more insight and more understanding about not only yourself but also how other people might see or experience the world. MBTI alone absolutely cannot encapsulate the complexity of a person, everyone is different based on a lot of things, but I do think that it provides a very interesting lens to analyze people and behaviours.
Also, on a more nerdy note, diving into what's called "cognitive functions" is mandatory if you want to be even remotely relevant in your MBTI analysis. To me, people who claim to be of a certain type, or who believe in the relevancy of MBTI, and don't know about cognitive functions, are just not understanding it at all, and are probably using it in the same way as one would use astrology (hence the comparisons, I guess).
Imagine judging people from their personality test. Especially when doing a job interview, we'll never be able to work for a company 🤣🤣
Personality tests may be flawed, but personality itself is a big driver for willingness, enjoyment, and ultimately competency at a job. Sadly those same societies trying to filter on personality traits also demand photos on résumés even for the most faceless back-of-house positions.

In every interview, the interviewer ALWAYS makes judgement about the potential recruits..... MBTI is one of the tools being used to minimize potential conflicts.....
And before this it was blood-type, right? In the old days it was family clans. Humans long for a tribal identity of some kind-- I have a simple theory that in societies that are extremely ethnically and culturally homogeneous, people will simply invent something else; new divisions, stratifications, and hierarchy.. it makes me despair how much the human organism seems to crave such partition and prioritization.

In a society where individuation is difficult, people will cling to meaningless superficial signifiers. In East Asia, that might be blood type or MBTI. In the Americas and Europe, it might be conspicuous consumption or astrology

A lot of people believe in 2 ontological motives that influence how humans react to the perception of themselves and the societies around them. 1 being that you want to be apart of something greater than yourself, and the other being to be viewed as special/distinguished. I think this is a product of a culture fueled by consumerism by the capitalist organization of the economy interacting with these ontological motives resulting in a commercialization of personality types.

Here's a tip on love language, learn to love wisely, you aren't pigeon hole to what the test tell you is your love language since it doesn't give magnitude or weight on each love language, just puts you in a category. You can actually embody the other love languages if you practice, this is the 4P of knowledge. Now as far as attachment style goes, attachment style is one of the life factors that literally affects your whole life outcome/perspective/personality. Attachment style has much stronger correlation than IQ on who you become, and that's saying alot. Saying its a mental health thing, what does that even mean? Isn't everything a mental health thing, or do we get philosophical about metaphysics, ontology and epistemology. But seeing how asian nation treat blood type, and how they lack heavily in learning from any social science or psychology in a meaningful way to fix their culture, I wouldn't be surprised if they would use love language over attachment style, even though scientifically attachment style is much more objectively rooted in empiricism than love language to measure the psyche.
@@henrytep8884 I was just trying to say that attachment theory is often used in the context of talking about mental health, developmental psychology and social science like you mentioned. Those are indeed not topics you'll find being widely discussed in most Asian countries, and your attachment style isn't exactly something you can casually discuss with friends - unlike MBTI/astrology/blood types.
I agree with you on love languages. I think it'd be more popular in Asia (or anywhere else tbh) compared to something that actually requires you to think about how your "type" affects your close relationships and others around you, like attachment styles or parenting styles (Something that would probably benefit Asian communities too lol). I find the categories in love languages arbitrary - I don't think it was ever claimed to be grounded in science, but many people do seem to take it that way. Idk anyone would say they are a person who prefers "receiving gifts" over "quality time" with their partners lol. It's nevertheless still a fun quiz that people can bond over and maybe help them think about their personal preferences, more akin to the MBTI and such.

@@McNugge. it’s a pseudoscience because it’s not based off anything and it essentializes the way people should embody love. What does that mean? It means instead of thinking that you have to love in the way a “love language” defines you as, it is better to just love wisely, or love in an agape manner. Love language creates needless category for love, it’s simplifies love in such a manner that it devolves the concept of love and how people should love into a process defined by the love language. It doesn’t even give people room to practice and participate in all forms of love, it just tells you that your love language is this and that’s who you are. It’s pseudoscience that doesn’t do anything to help people love better, or to love wisely, or to participate in love in all facets and manner that one can love.
Specifically people in korea and not koreans in general, theyre really into mbti and blood type. My parents generations mbti was blood type. They say each blood types have their own type of personalities. Now its mbti. It's annoying because they ask "are you a f or t" where t is "bad". So they ask something like "i hit my head while jumping in the car" and if say "are you okay" you're a f and if you ask "why did you jump in the car?"you're a t. Its such a naive way of viewing peoples judgment.
At least MBTI makes direct generalisations about the person's personality and as such actually TRIES to meaningfully describe the person. Blood types tho...

Myers Briggs was developed by the ETS a spin off from the American College Board the same group that adapted the original Binet-IQ test to create the L SAT so its even more connected to Eugenics. The goal was to create a "Complete Census of Abilities" that would re-order the entirity of American society among 'Rational' lines but only Myers Briggs got anywhere near a usuable state so the program got abandoned and the ETS' trustees forced it to stay with its original intended remit. There's literally a Gundam villain with the same plan.
If the Supreme Court hadn't upheld Lyndon Johnson's 'Affirmitive Action' executive order Eugenecists might have been able to block basically all minorities from American higher education.

Carl Jung was a big fan of astrology and personality astrology is essentially a 20th century discipline that postdates Freud's early work on personality and only became popular when newspapers started regularly carrying horoscopes in the 1930s.

I could literally not fully understand or misinterpret the questions on these tests and get a "wrong" mbti code, and that all of a sudden means other people/companies perceive or view me differently or put me in a different box? Exactly! One of the biggest problems with these sorts of tests is that they aren’t even replicable in the same person. I took the mbti a couple years ago and got intp, then again a year or so later and got istj. I don’t think my personality completely shifted in that time, just my own perception of it which was reflected in how I answered the questions

@@sidimote It is the test. It has a bad reliability across the bord. That's one of the reasons it's considered unuseful. And your just one person and so your experience would be anecdotal evidence at best. But doing the test so often also makes it a routine for you. Obviously it is easier to get the same results, escpecially if you like your type.
So, as a fellow logical thinking INT-Type, I can tell you that it's not any more scientific than zodiac signs. But since I'm a Gemini you shouldn't take my word for it, but just read the Wikipedia page or some scientific papers about it. Non of them have a favorable view on the mbti.
My cousin works in HR (no she wouldn't select someone based on that), but she observed people around her happened to land jobs that fit their MBTI ; not an exact science but that would make sense people who declare to be more comfortable in X situation are more likely to naturally gravitate towards it.
Now that being said I'm ENFP working in accounting, which is supposed to be one of the worst jobs for my type. I took a personality test for my current job and they gave me the result prior to my interview and was invited to discuss it, if I found it faithful or not. That's how it should be used, as a conversation stater, not to close doors.
Of course, I wished I knew about mbti before choosing my career path. I didn't know myself very well, I tried to do the same thing as my friends were doing, ending up doing something that I did'nt like and that wasn't my thing. Now I can use my creativity and my strong organizational skill in my job and it is perfect.

Dude as an astrologer, idk why the money and attention in astrology has been going more to this. Astrology can get very philosophical, it's more about a relationship to life, idk why people have been preferring these generalizations, and have been taking incompatability so personally. Also many in the astrology field have been trying to use astrology to justify avoiding systemic change and it frustrates me so.
Ok actually two years ago I researched a lot about MBTI by influence of a friend and learned about cognitive functions, and is quite fun, like I don't take it literally or think it should be a science, but it's fun to go to personality database and see the discussions about you favorite character's type (I'm INTP btw)

Agreed. I'm a psych student and seeing MBTI in my textbook was kind of cool since I enjoyed researching cognitive functions beforehand. In the end, it is a pseuodoscience, but it's still fun to type characters and stuff like that. It absolutely shouldn't be used in interviews.
I agree, they’re fun and a good tool to use for introspection. Like sometimes I read descriptions about my personality and realize I do do some of these things, and would like to change that. But using it like it’s some sort of gospel or as a way to describe someone’s character in an absolute way is definitely taking it too far.
I've always found it frustrating because it asks things like "you prioritize proving your point over preserving someone's feelings" which requires you to imagine the context. Even argumentative people might choose to "preserve" feelings depending on how important the point is, the intensity of the feelings, how stubborn they know the other person to be, how much energy they have on a given day, or any number of important details that are not given.
I'm hovering at 50/50 for all the types except Intuitive/observing, i always get intuiting (ironically) even though I can't intuitively guess the contexts of many of the questions.

Like I'm serious, it states in it's theory section that it's actually OCEAN/BIG5 [still a mockery of it] and that it's - essentially, clickbait. I can't send the link ofc but just look up "Michael Caloz Cognitive Functions test." Even then, it is still just a random internet test, but it will at least show you something about actual MBTI that you might find intriguing.
Exactly. I have a very argumentative personality and instinctively think how to improve something, but I've lived long enough to learn that close 100% of the time one is unable to change anything and the only outcome of even a very constructive argument is going to end in troubles close to every single time. So however frustrated or even angry I may feel about something, I just ignore the problem and follow the herd or when it gets absoluetly unbearable I just quit the situation. Discussions are good at a university or when there is a very small structure tasked with solving a new problem carte blanche, but otherwise it's just trying to smash a concrete wall with your head. I strongly believe that a point is far more important than anyone's feelings, especially since a measure of maturity is to be able to cope with them and admit your mistakes, but I'm not going to upset someone at something as petty as a workplace, unless there would be a much broader and vastly more important reason to take that person down.

Boy did they go all in on the blood types in korea too, i remember interviews during variety shows back in the day when they would ask about blood types, all the idol profiles would list blood tyoes and horoscopes when nowadays its only the mbti. This lasted well into the mid 2010s, when groups like BLady (girl group of all B types) and B1A4 (5 member boy group, have a guess at their blood types) were debuting. Fun fact, singapore was in on the mbti since the late aughts, because I took my test in school there. They literally had us do it to put us into groups for group projects, to "align personalities and gather diverse strengths". It was wild. And don't get me started on the enneagrams that the US has going on

I actually like mbti because it's fun, I look at aesthetics and listen to playlists based on diff mbti types. It also makes for an interesting conversation starter. But where "compatibility" and job opportunities are concerned is where I draw the line.

It depends on their perception, judgement, state of knowledge and current motivation. Personality has little to do with it especially since most adults, especially those who are at least moderately succesful, have the ability to ignore their preferences and do what appears to be best based on their knowledge and how they see the problem they're facing. Whatever personality, a 100/100 people is going to run away from a poisonous snake, unless they fail to notice it's presence.
the type B hate in japan reminds me a lot of how people treat certain zodiac signs, especially geminis (my sign), due to the stereotypes attached to them. i remember getting heated about this often because i thought it was ridiculous and i even took it personally at one point (embarrassing, i know). now though i just think that it’s a weird way to try to read people before getting to know them because people who have the same sign (or blood type in this case) don’t act the same anyways
Zodiacs in the west are def just as intense, I’ve seen posts abt roommates listings saying they won’t accept applications for like say a gemini, there are certain negative and positive qualities already associated with certain zodiacs like “Pisces males are the worst”, or “i love libras I always get along with them” I don’t take zodiac seriously myself but I do have my preconceived notions about zodiacs already, I think it’s fun to play into zodiacs but never to actually use it as a serious markers of ones personality, some ppl however live and die by zodiacs

I spoke with a Psychology Doctor (title) at my university. He said that with modern findings, the MBTI personality test is both academically floored, and mathematically (if you look at statistics) floored. Firstly, everyone has in them minimal parts of other personality types present at the same time. Depending on the stimulus, even those can be triggered. Secondly, "personality", according to him, is a ratio and proportion of four drives (see Dr. Adam Crizzle) and even similar people will be different. Finally, everyone is quite different, and to reduce millions of people to a couple of categories is mathematically inprecise and ignorant.

There’s nothing wrong with personality tests to try to understand yourself or others better. Taking them too far, as with any tool, is going to be bad, of course. They certainly can’t tell you if someone is fit for a job or not.

personality tests, zodiacs, and even tarot all serve the same sort of function for me of being a tool for reflection and a kind of meditation - but I always make sure to keep in mind that none of it is solid fact. When I was much younger I would cling to these kinds of things because I desperately wanted simple, clean-cut answers to myself and I think wanting to sort ourselves into little boxes is a very natural thing for young people to want to do. I just wish instead of things being seen as black and white ("thing bad" VS "thing good"), people would see it more of an issue of HOW it's used.
One positive is something I spoke with my friend about recently about another mutual friend of ours - we've all known each other since we were young and our friend is naturally very shy but now has a profession where she needs to be much more extroverted. A few years ago she got really into crystals, tarot, zodiac stuff, etc - and while it's a little silly at times she really used embracing herself as being a leo to take traits of herself that already within the leo archetype and use those to push herself into being an over all more "leo" version of herself. She didn't completely change her personality, but she used the mindset "I'm a leo" to slowly grow into a more outgoing, confident version of herself that she wanted to be and she's struggling a lot less now.
I only started learning about these things through her and while I don't believe it, Ive used star signs (and the concept of sun, venus, and rising signs all existing in one person) too to embrace parts of my personality I've struggled with and helped me adopt a mindset that different, clashing facets of myself can exist in harmony.
But of course, if the beginning and end of your understanding of yourself and others are only these things and you see people as static instead of constantly changing and evolving, that's an extremely limiting and potentially dangerous view of humanity as a whole.
I think these tests fall into a broader human need to categorize (and thus simplify) things. They (categories/labels in general) can be useful when they're shown to be accurate, but taking labels of any kind as a be-all-end-all is always a mistake. I wish we could grasp the ideas of normal curves and intersectionality a bit more easily, but there's no denying the amount of time and energy saved by taking prejudiced shortcuts for 80% of the time, at least in the short term.
Right, it's way simpler and more convincing for me to say I'm an INTJ-A, rather than (remembering then) describing my Big-5 as O82 C69 E25 A61 N28.
@@doujinflip even those are still categories. the real truth of who you are is fully is indescribable verbally (you may not even know yourself), so we consolidate that information into the most relevant key "features" someone else might be able to relate to.
I mean Newton's law still works for the majority of cases despite better laws superseding it. Mbti's uses might be much more limited though

MBTI is based on whims and feelings. I'm not saying they're completely useless, but they're pretty close to it and should be treated as reliable as polygraph tests, which is to say, not reliable at all and just a bit of fun.

back when I was really little I remember it was 'which of the four temperaments are you?'. I don't remember much but I specifically remember it was even supposed to reflect in the way you sat. I ended up in the choleric section at school for leadership but I didn't like the pressure so I switched my answers so I was phlegmatic. To this day, I still tend to sit with my legs stretched out in front of me because of that. Anyway, fascinating breakdown. I took the MB test out of curiosity myself a couple of years ago (it didn't care how I sat in a chair). I agree with you that tests like that help you do some inner study of yourself, figure out the details of who you are and what you like about yourself and want to nurture. What some people don't realize is - its a tool, not a cheat sheet. You should always be tweaking who you are to become a better person and it never hurts to have some tools to go digging around inside yourself to figure out why you react to certain things or feel certain ways so that you can decide if that's something you want to keep or change. Just flat paving over everything with 'that's my personality type so that's what I'll always be' is where it gets detrimental. For a talk about a personality test that isn't psychologically sound, this was really a very psychologically sound video. I love 'why things tick' and their influence on society and people. You were very clear in your explanations, very non-judgemental and yet clear about the dangers, and added a great sense of humor to boot. I've got a couple of friends I'm going to share this with. Also I once tripped over an armchair I knew was there and fell in a hotel lobby full of Japanese guests. As an adult. I even made a rather loud noise as I went down. So - we'll bear the shame of faulty feet together. It's what people with our personality types would do.

I feel that Meyer-Briggs is quite inaccurate. I change a couple answers on the test depending on my mood and I change from an ENFP to an ENFJ and sometimes even an INFP. I think the BIG Five is used more frequently by therapists.

The traits are a range and not a binary switch, hence why you might flip when you're near the middle. Big-5 and HEXACO used in real psychology are usually seen as percentages like they're supposed to be.

The test comes with a percentage of how far you are on the scale of each letter. Most people are quite balanced, so it is definitely possible that some letters change depending on the mood.
The thing is, personality _isn't_ solid. It's constantly changing, even if you don't notice it. All the test does is give you a hazy idea of what your mental state and self-image is like at a particular point in time. Take the test, wait a few days, maybe read a bunch of profoundly tragic novels, and then take the test again - you're not gonna get the same result as before.

I was obsessively into mbti and especially the cognitive functions as a young teenager. i'm autistic, and it definitely gave me a framework for understanding other people's perspectives and priorities in a way that was extremely helpful as someone who struggled with strangers, empathy, and socialization. while i'm no longer attached to the mbti (it is a pseudoscience, and deeply flawed) i still sometimes process the world through cognitive functions to a degree. i've often been in arguments with a person where I realized that, say, I was prioritizing a logical internal order (Ti) where they were prioritizing an external order (Te), or that someone was very good at understanding and accounting for the emotions of others (Fe) but struggled with introspection and understanding their own emotions (Fi) and defining these tendencies through cognitive functions has been helpful to me in recognizing and responding to differences between people
Really interesting again. 90% of the Chinese people I interact with have their MBTI displayed on their profile, I was wondering about it. About the tests themselves, i think they can tell oneself quite a bit, as long as you dig deeper after taking the test. Just as you said.
The one company that asked about the strengths and weaknesses of one's MBTI... honestly I think it is a very smart interview question. They are not asking for specific types to apply, they are asking for introspection. Everybody can bring something to the table in a company, and knowing where one needs help and where one can take the lead is a huge boon.

I'm gonna say this, and it'll upset a lot of people. The personality test which the majority of people used is the Myers-Briggs, or based on it, is total bs. The test was not scientific-based at all nor the people invented it had any background in science. Psychologist Carl Jung was the first person to propose that people could be divided into 8 types, but later he discarded it deeming that humans are complex creatures and cannot be defined by any stereotype; plus the 8 types were based on him GUESSING. There was no data or controlled experiment involved. Later, mystery novelist and her mother Myers-Briggs found Jung's theory, and came up with their own shit, while adding extra personalities into it to spice things up (8 types to 16). In the beginning, the Myers-Briggs test was something they would use at party for fun, but it became popular in high society, and the rest is history.
People are complex. You can be both extrovert and introvert at the same time (maybe not equal amount). For example, a jock football player would be the dominant extrovert in a football game, but throw the same guy into a Hearthstone tournament, and he became the idiot loser of the pack; and the reverse is true for a card game player. Some days you wanna go out and talk to people, and some days you hate everyone. Everyone is an exception to the rule. For these personality tests to say you are one type, and that's it is just plain stupid lol.

Theoretically everything is a spectrum. But if you compare MBTI with Big5/OCEAN which is like ✨the✨ standard in psychology right now then you can see some similarities/overlap. The biggest one being extraversion/introversion. So saying that it's like astrology or homeopathy is like comparing medicinal tea to globules. The accuracy and precision of psychology and medicine is a spectrum, too.
Myers briggs isnt perfect but it isn't total bullshit if you research deeper about cognitive functions it is actually a logical system unfortunately most people dont care to research in depth about that stuff

I think a lot of people get super into it because of Jung's theory on the cognitive functions. It's really interesting. Myers Brigs just monetized his ideas to make types and tests.

MBTI is a skewed and flawed psychological measurement it was mentioned during my collegiate years as somewhat a shitty tool since it did not meet the 3 criterias (reliability validity verifiability).
This phenomena where east asia specifically S.Kores is obssessed with knowing their types is called the barnum effect where vague descriptions are deemed true regardless of its value. In general this leads to a false perception on people about personality.
What I have learned in psychology is that personality is like jelly or ditto from pokemon. It varies depending through nature and nurture.
MBTI is not supposed to describe a person entirely, it should be seen as a general pattern of preferred behaviours a person usually has. And if you delve a bit more into it, all 16 personalities do have flaws, weaknesses, very annoying cons, and are clearly distinct from one another, so I don't believe it solely relies on Barnum effect.

They are intentionally broad the same way horoscopes are so they pretty much fit everyone, what youll notice is depending on the day who you're hanging out with youll express and different parts of your personality. Which is why these tests are like a horoscope, not too mention that through out your life depending on your experiences your personality changes.
This is coming from someone thats taken like 4 or 5 psychology courses and had planed on getting a major psychology.

The 16 personality website and the "test" is trash yep, they have things to sell so it's more of a marketing tool, but the theory behind it is really interesting though it should rather be seen as an analysis tool that presents people in a particular lens, not boxes in which you should shove every person.

Demanding reliability for a personality test is, in itself, a degenerate thing to begin with.

I watch way too many video essays, and I can say confidently that this video was a 10/10. Very good job.
As a note and saying that early on at 1:46, I got asked to take that personality test by a friend and while the result usually stayed similar (across taking different tests, with usually 1 letter changing), the categorizing didn't make any sense. As in, you could answer all questions differently, depending on what context you apply them to. And I noticed I always answered based on the context most important to me, but that's not the context that happens the most. When I read through the description I thought "Oh, that sounds actually quite fitting, I mean a bunch is also unfitting but it's a wide type and spectrum, so can't expect all to be the same". Then I read over the other types and thought exactly the same thing, about almost all of them. Which then reminded me of what horoscopes do, it's exactly the same thing: fan it out wide enough while keeping it as vague as possible, so people can fill the lack of precision and information with their own experiences and feelings. Which...makes it rather pointless.
For example for work and when I approach tasks, I am very straight forward, planned out and dedicated, but when I interact with other people, mindsets, opinions, views and generally speaking new experiences/options, I like to listen to them and try to understand how they came to be, or for new experiences to just try them out to see if I really like/dislike them - or for stuff I know I liked/disliked to try them out again to see if something changed. That's kind of the opposite of being planned out and straight forward, as in to avoid getting stuck on what I am used to I'd rather experience something spontaneously as it makes it easier to experience something differently.
i took the test a while back, discussed it with my friends who also took it in a casual conversation, looked up which fictional characters shared my type and forgot about it
i never thought of it as something serious, that affects work and relationship
and i find this seriousness around it to be super silly, like it's just a funny personality test, it's like taking horoscopes seriously 😅
Living in Japan, can confirm people ask about blood type often. It won't happen with every person you meet, but it will happen enough to make you raise an eyebrow at why they're asking. But its interesting to note that they don't actually care whether the type is negative or positive. Which is strange because that's a pretty important bit of info if you're getting a blood transfusion.
Also, recently a lot of people talk about this personality test in Japan as well. Seems like its starting to catch on.

When I first found MBTI it somehow helped me to ease my anxiety, mainly because I was constantly struggling with the feeling of constant “alienation” and belief “everything i do and I am - is bad, being myself- bad, trying to conform- bad, I’m bad by definition” and gave me the feeling of “I’m just ME, and that’s perfectly okay”…ironically…it probably gave me that feeling because of flattery 😂
At first I idealized mbti a bit, but then I accepted that its just a SLIGHTLY better version of astrology(“at least they ask questions instead of labeling you for your birth date”), and that it could AT BEST give you a rough blurry “perception” of someone’s personality…at the specific period of time…MAYBE
Now I just use mbti for fun, for memes…and for helping me feel slightly better about myself 😅
Also it might be fun to use test with your friend so that they could try answering questions while commenting and explaining their choices, which could actually potentially help you know more about them…and maybe laugh at some questions, like “What the hell does it even mean?! How the hell am I supposed to know?” etc

Imagine being comfortable with being told who you are and acting the part, because it is simpler and it saves time. Being authentic is hard sometimes and it takes practice to become self confident doing so, but boy it is worth it. Honesty is a part of freedom in ny book.

It is definitely true that you shouldn't put too much weight on the MBTI. It is especially worrying, if e.g., businesses start declining applicants based on their MBTI. Personally I've found MBTI to be a useful framework for analysing your own thinking patterns. While it can be considered to be pseudoscience, it's also interesting to observe that e.g., an INFP is extremely unlikely to mistype as an ESTJ, if they answer the questions anywhere close to truth.
It's an useful tool that can be considered, if you're having a hard time understanding the thinking patterns of say your boss. Ask them their type, if it's counter to yours - it'll be easier to understand why their logic doesn't follow yours. For example if they rely more on hard logic, while you're a feeler, you might want to present your ideas in a way that comes off more as logic based rather than feeling.
tldr: mbti can be a useful tool, if not taken too seriously and more as a guideline'ish thingy
I dont even know what MBTI i am because two diff websites gives me diff results. And even for the questions, like : "Do you regularly make new friends?" I have to ponder to what degree do I consider someone a friend. And at that point, it's just unanswerable and I have to give a neutral answer because I cant properly give a correct answer.

Because these tests use the term "MBTI" while not being at all actually MBTI. As the reply above said, MBTI is based on cognitive functions. If it's something that interests you, a good place to start or just to see more accurate information, is searching up "Michael Caloz Cognitive Functions test"
It's still a random internet test, but at least it knows what terms it's using and tries to explain them to you. Hopefully it satisfies you a bit more lol

I've known about mbti for a while. From what i've learnt, it's better to take a cognitive functions test and avoid 16personalities, which is unfortunately more commonly known. Once you know your cognitive functions, you use them simply as a guide. It can be helpful when writing or understanding fictional characters
Nothing wrong with 16p. It is simple and great to start. If you have great introspection you will not be mistyped. My type never changed for many years even though I took it many times. People who are mistyped, answer the question with having their ideal self in mind or try to get that one type they want to get.

One time, several years ago, I saw a tumblr post that said, “the truth is people get a little weird when they have too much social interaction and when they have too little social interaction, and that range is different for everyone” and then I stopped thinking about ‘personality’ as something that could be so easily defined.

My friend forced me to take an MBTI test online once so I’m an INTP, I’m type B too. MBTI was all over tumblr when I was growing and INFJs loved being “rare”. I have a psychology degree. I also took a class on personality theory. I think these tests are interesting but not infallible. Of course all the tests should be valid and reliable when given by a qualified person. I think in some cases like finding roommates it could work well but trying to fill a job or a partner should require more contact beyond a personality test. I remember the blood test typing personality tests. Growing up watch Korean variety shows, they would always blame being a little weird on being AB😭.
Except the myer briggs test will never be reliable even when given by a qualified person, mostly because the test itself was never made by a qualified person. Other personality tests are far more reliable

I like the Big 5 or OCEAN/CANOE for personality instead. It's a spectrum rather than a dichotomy and explains the nuance. It also explains the dynamics between traits of my personality.
There are also MBTI tests that will show the percentage of each trait and I like those better than most MBTI tests for the same reason I like big five. Shows that it's more than just those 4 letters but the dynamics between them and how they interact with each other based on situations.
If you like the big 5, I’d recommend you take a look at HEXACO. It’s an update of the big 5 spectrum which introduces honesty/agreeableness as an additional axis. Either way any model with a unimodal spectrum is much better than MBTI’s bimodal spectrum
Ideally the traits should always be presented as a spectrum. Big-5 and HEXACO (basically Big-5 + honesty/humility) do a good job of showing the strength percentages since they're not defined with category results like MBTI does.
Is the Big 5 still considered scientific? I'm not into psychology, but I heard the area is in a replication crisis, with most publications failing reproduction attempts.
Its the Same thing with the personality test plus all mbti have percentages idk what you're talking about you could literally be 50-50 with all but the test wont show you that they might show you 51-49 just a 1% difference but people will still judge you for that *1*
How does the Big5 explain the dynamics between the 5 factors? I thought the factors being seen as independent from each other and not having a theoretical framework to explain them are viewed as major flaws of this "theory".

Nice ending! I do the same whenever someone asks me what’s my sign. I would just tell them "if you know about it so much, why don’t you guess which one am I?" I won’t register what sign they are after they told me theirs, ‘cause it doesn’t help me at all getting to know about them. I prefer to learn about them based on their background and past, rather based on a loose statistical label.

Mbti became bigger and gained more interest during the pandemic. During this time we were all mostly isolated and didn't have much human contact and alot of us lost touch of reality. It was hard to define ourselves in such a time as we rarely recieved validation or dislike regarding our traits nor met people who were different from us and in such a time the simple four letter system did give us security regarding ourselves despite it's rather shallow nature
I've been mbti typology/mbti for 6 years. The main issue is that it doesn't define you at work. Another issue is that most people keep using bad quizzes / websites such as 16personality and truity instead of actually using the cognitive functions to judge.
It can define you at work by knowing your MBTI.

As much as I love doing MBTI, I don’t think that should be the reason of why I can or cannot do my job.
I used to think a certain personality test was 100% accurate and used it to try to understand myself and others. I recently learned that I am autistic and have since realized it was a tool I could use in place of what others seem to do naturally. I was very defensive of it for that reason. If used as a tool for SELF reflection it can have some use. But to see it used on such a wide scale with real consequences is horrifying. Great video, love everything you do.
