As someone who is 21 and getting back into competitive ball(and probably really behind everyone my age but that's what practice and dedication is for) these videos definitely help

I always saw what I call a snapshot of the release and tracked the circle on the side of the ball on its way. I would try to put the start of the barrel through that point. The location of the axis resides in the circle telling us what angle the ball will break on or just stay flat. One thing that can help is looking to the elbow to pick up the ball as the hand breaks that visual plane before the release giving you a few more milliseconds to track hand position and remember the release angle of the arm so you can track on that angle. Having been a catcher for 20 years certainly helped because I saw more balls coming at me that most.
In men's fast pitch I only had enough time to register the release so I had to rely on that along with moving up in the box to minimize the ball movement.
Great video Matt! Very descriptive on what to look for with hand position.

Thanks for the tips...took me half the season [old man's league]...to see it well...second half of the season...I was hitting the ball hard 90 % of the time!

I enjoy your videos but this one was especially useful. I include a lot of your content in my practices & lessons while coaching girl fastpitch softball players 11 - 18 yrs old. I feel like the "yes" mindset and only having to decide "no" along with picking the ball up as soon as possible are such an part of having successful ABs. Not sure but I would bet that you have many followers in your audience that includes fastpitch softball players & softball coaches! Thank you!

Hitting at a high level is all about visual acuity, depth perception and contrast recognition.
There's things you can do to maximize your capabilities and recognize patterns and all that, but MLB guys have a 4k TV with great refresh rate and all the settings optimum. The average person, even if tremendously athletic has a ten year old LCD 720p or 1080i....

there are some hitters that wear glasses though.

@@redwingsfan1136 Sure, some wear glasses, but with that correction they have at least good visual acuity along with great contrast recognition and depth perception. Overall the eyesight is tremendous.

This maybe a dumb question. But, is MLB the show and Xbox games a pretty good simulation that would be beneficial to just practice and study the release points of the in game pitchers?

It bothers people because it looks like your in a room alone way more than 6' apart. When people see you with the mask on it looks like your trying to make a political statement or that your letting people know that you are doing the right thing. It's kinda like that kid in school that's the teacher's pet. But it is your right to wear it untill they make it illegal again to wear masks in public
