one that calls a 3" trout a 14-foot bull shark, you never go in bear country with just mace if you have any sanity, and that's coming from someone whose experience has always been they are running away before you even spot them. I would rather have it and not need it then need it and not have it.

Timmothy started this nightmare as trying to protect bears from poacher. He got way too carried away with it and so careless after couple years of not even carrying bear spray. Absolutely no excuse for his carelessness and putting others life at risk however He suffered a horrible death.

People go out hiking all the time in bear country, I think they were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Most experienced outdoorsman try to stay two steps ahead and running into a brown bear if something that should be avoided at all cost. I agree it’s always good to be armed or atleast have a can of bear mace but it is true tons i mean tons of people hike or camp in bear territory and are fine and never run into trouble. It’s all about timing and knowing your surroundings, the kids for example might have got a little confident and didn’t take the measurements to avoid a bear.

I do not understand your advice, not to hit or shoot at bears. I do acknowledge that shooting a bear & not incapacitating it.
      Will make the situation worse.
I am specifically referring to while being attacked.
Not running is good advice & I do understand that playing dead & not resisting is a tactic that has some success.
However, in the last story. Olga witnessed the bear kill her dad. So this was not just a mauling in progress.
I personally wonder why they didn't enter the water. Maybe the river was too powerful or too swift.
Her dad may not have had a chance, maybe she didn't either.
I think it may have started out as protecting her cubs. But to then feed on them.
Maybe it was more about food.
Olga must have been an exceptional human being.

    • @thomask6798
      @thomask6798 Год назад

I think that anyone entering bear country in national parks.
Should have to actually watch bear attack videos. Pretty sure it would instill the proper amount of fear & respect for the bears.
Maybe they should be required to have bear spray. I mean surely taking into account the cost of search & rescue operations.
It is not unreasonable to expect people to take active precautions.
That's the very reason there are seatbelt laws, mandatory insurance & bans on places people can smoke.
At least that is the stated purpose for those things.
There is a fee to enter parks. So why are people being allowed to go into bear country.
Without being responsible for some degree of their own safety?
Hell, you could provide the bear spray through a deposit system.
If it was not used during your trip.
You could return it & get your deposit back. It doesn't make any sense to me that you can be ticketed for not using your seatbelt.
Yet, you can run around in bear country, ignorant of bears & bear behavior, without taking any precautions.
Placing you, your friends & the bears in jeopardy.
Sure some attacks would still occur due to protective behavior over cubs or food. But, I believe there would be less of them.
Hell, having something as simple as a loud whistle or canned air horn.
      Would likely reduce attacks.
I also think they should consider adding, Tropicamide, to bear spray.
Tropicamide is what optometrists use to dilate your pupils.
If you have ever had this done to you.
Then you know how incapacitating light, especially sunlight, is.
Pretty certain something could be created that would take immediate affect & be limited to a short amount of time. Giving a good chance of getting away, without leaving the bear incapacitated to the point of life endangering vulnerability.
Studies gave shown that there are incidents in which bear spray actually attracts bears.
They have been witnessed rubbing around in it on the ground.
Plus, many instances of it not working as intended & actually enraging the bear.
Maybe none of what I have suggested would work.
But, I cannot simply ignore the fact. That the measures that are currently being used have their weaknesses.
If you do not have a gun.
Grab a quality spear. Hell, any bear attacking you, will do all the work for you. You just have put the end onto the ground or use your foot to anchor it. Point it at a vital area on the bear & wait for it to impale itself.
I'm not advocating going around shish kabobing bears.
But, if it is life & death. I am not willing to take a chance that playing dead will work out in my favor.
Grizzly Bears are known to maul & move on.
However, Black Bears are notorious killers.
Their M.O. is killing any thing they feel is a threat to them.
Even if they have no intention of considering you as food.
Nature is not prejudice or bias.
      It has no underlying agenda.
Nature is completely incapable of anything along those lines.
Nature is savagely brutal & merciless, completely without malice of any kind.
But, a defenseless human up against a bear, has no chance.
An armed human is not guaranteed victory.
At best the odds are improved.
I may be in their territory, it doesn't mean I have to ignore my intelligence, or the fact that I am also as connected to nature as every other living thing. Every living thing defends their life.
Wow! I feel I have gotten carried away.

Bears are for the most part not dangerous to people so long as you take even basic precautions. Brown bears in particular, while intensely powerful animals, almost never kill people to eat, most attacks from them are when they're startled and trying to defend themselves from an unknown presence. That's why they tell you to make noise, alerting bears to your presence while you're farther away will generally result in them leaving as they'd rather not deal with that. This is also why you're supposed to play dead, if a bear is convinced you're a threat, trying to convince it that the threat is neutralized will often get it to leave you alone. If a bear is hunting you though, and you can absolutely tell the difference, pretty much your only chance is to put up such a fight that it decides you're not worth the hassle- a broken tooth, gouged out eye, or punctured throat would be too debilitating for a bear to risk suffering if it were convinced its target had a chance of causing such an injury. So it can be worth taking self-defense measures with you in case you're that one in a million unlucky bastard, but for the most part you don't have all that much to worry about as long as you know what bears tend to be like and how to go about being in the same area as them. Fuck polar bears though, there ain't shit you can do against them

We have a least four black bears in the woods behind our home. A large male and a mama and her two cubs in western Massachusetts. Twenty five years ago they were not common here.So uncommon that when there was one up a tree in a nearby town, the local newspaper and a lot of spectators went to see it.Now you see photos of them in someone’s yard almost daily.

Every single one of these stories are sad, but have a single common denominator, people who go into the bush and don't have a effective defensive weapon. Backup weapons ain't gonna do shit against bears. They're too fast, you won't be able to rely on having enough time to draw a backup weapon at all. If you've gotta shoot, you need to make your first shot count, because it may well be the only one you get. Though I think you don't actually need a shotgun necessarily, bears can be dealt with effectively using pretty much any full power rifle round, and some large caliber handguns can be very effective against them too. Just, y'know, be sure you learn where to shoot a bear and don't just guess, because a lot of the common guesses are just wrong. Ultimately your skill as a marksman and knowledge of your target are far more important than the specific kind of gun you use.

If one thing channels like this one has taught me is this; no matter what any “expert” says ALWAYS go into bear country armed with a large caliber pistol at the very least.😤 I’ve heard all sorts of rangers & guides say a pistol is “worthless” against a grizzly bear. And that you’re much better off with bear spray. That’s unequivocally NOT TRUE. 3 hunters were charged by a 600lb boar grizzly bear that had found the elk the hunters had killed shortly before. Two of the had pistols, a 10mm Glock & a .45 with hollow point bullets. The other hunter had bear spray. The bear charged, the one hunter deployed his bear spray which the bear ran right thru unaffected. It even blew back towards the hunters effecting their ability to see & breathe. Fortunately for them the two with pistols both emptied mags into the big male dropping it less than five feet from them. The authorities found 16 bullets inside the bear that had caused massive damage breaking both of the bears shoulders & puncturing it’s chest cavity skull. Without them two pistols it’s like y’all three hunters would have been gravely injured or even ended up as bear scat on the forest floor. Don’t listen to “experts”. Trust yourself & common sense. It’ll probably save your life.😤

I think the moral of the first story is get familiar with your defenses whatever they may be.
The trouble the boys had with activating the beacon.
Seemed to me, like they were not familiar with how to open the box it was in & under their circumstances.
You may not get the time to fumble with that or your bear spray.
When they were trying to open the box. I kept thinking what would happen if the bear came back.
They actually had bear spray & none of them even tried to use it.
I am blaming them in any way.
Pretty certain that there's a decent chance, I could be running with a full load in my pants.
But, I got the distinct impression that they had not practiced any scenarios involving a bear attack or using bear spray. Maybe it would not have changed anything. I mean a group of individuals will be heavily influenced by the behavior around them.
Everyone panicked which undoubtedly fueled everyone's panic.
Clearly, no one knows how they will handle any situation until they are in it.
The true reality is, that everything they did succeeded in bring all of them home alive.
