  • In May of 1944, Ray Elsmor was flying over the centre of New Guinea when he stumbled upon something that left him speechless. Surrounded by jagged mountains was a hidden valley filled with large structures and gardens teeming with sweet potato, taro and tobacco.
Unknowingly, he had stumbled upon thousands of people who had never come into contact with the outside world. It was easy to see why, the only entrance was a river on the south end which cascaded over a cliff and flying through the valley itself was dangerous due to the heavy clouds and mountains surrounding the land.
The terrain made it impossible to land an aircraft, but the pictures and stories of the hidden valley and its occupants would make their way back to the allied troops stationed on the island country.
Depending on who you asked they would either tell you this valley was home to a tall, beautiful super race or filled with cannibals and head hunters performing human sacrifices. If someone was desperate enough to find out for themselves, they would need to trek over 240km through mountains, swamps and lakes littered with Japanese soldiers.
But even with the distance, a number of military planes would fly over the village, some of which only doing so as a form of sightseeing to entertain allied troops. But his would all end on May 13th 1945, when a plane full of American soldiers would crash in this valley while trying to see the village.
Instead of observing the villagers safely from the sky, they would find themselves injured and surrounded by them for over a month. What’s even more interesting about this story is there are accounts from those who were children in these villages which give a small insight into what their parents thought when confronted with these completely alien people.
This is the story of the Shangri La Crash.

Have you done a Ramree Island video?
I too just found the Croc video.
Ramree is one - if not the - biggest salty attack ever.
Over 1000 Japanese soldiers who retreat into the swamp, filled with giant Salty Crocs!
Apparently the screams could be heard all night.
    Rare story!

      It's a serious one bro.
I'm surprised they've made one movie about it, and it was so poorly done that they dropped a British recon team into the swamp, then you saw cut shots of small crocs going into the water, cut back to a brit just disappearing off screen. 🤣
If they did a proper movie about it (even though its been somewhat debunked, it's still in the Guinness book of records as largest animal attack on humans) it could be an epic movie.
A bloody gory one. But a potentially great one.

@@NotDecided420 one of my all time fav stories to listen to and research it’s kinda sad cuz all of the ramree crocs are near eradicated from the island :((

      It is disputed now.
But regardless of what actually happened, it's still a crazy story with one pathetic movie!
The USS Indianapollis had a half decent movie made about it, but that could have been better.
But the current Ramree movie is low-budget trash! 🤣
It's about a group of British who die to off-screen crocodiles.
It doesn't tell the story of the taking of the island and the subsequent deaths of 2000 Japanese.
Instead, it tells what I assume is a made-up story about 5 British expeditionaries who meet their end there. 🤷🏻‍♂️
