    Fall fertilizing also plays a huge part in early green up. I mulch all my leaves in the fall as well. Mine break down completely, but some people may have too many leaves to do this. If you don’t want to buy that dethatcher, just a light raking is enough to get air and light into the grass.

      I got a groundskeeper II rake this year and wow. It’s great for the edges where the dethatcher can’t get, and honestly it’s almost better than an actual thatch rake. Would be great for a spring raking.

      @@BenNawrath I actually just bought one of those. Haven't used it on the grass yet, but used it to seed some flower beds and it worked great for that, the little tines disturb the ground just enough to bury the seed without moving it around everywhere.

      @@mplslawnguy3389 for sure! You ever watch Ryan Knorr’s channel? When he seeds he usually just drags a metal tune rake along the ground to help incorporate the seed. Works great there too. You can be aggressive or just let the weight do the work. I’m glad I pulled the trigger. I just wouldn’t use it on ground where I don’t want to disturb my pre emergent lol.

    I fertilize every chance I get during the winter. It snows where I live, but every once in a while there is no snow, so I fertilize. The grass never grows, but it does green up during the cold months. My lawn didn't seem to respond to Scotts Green Max like it does usually this spring. I hit it with humic and seaweed and it responded very quickly. Without soil amendment, most people aren't going anywhere. I haven't dethatched lately because the lawn doesn't need it. Kentucky Blue, Fescue, Perennial Rye don't all grow at the same rates depending on temperature. I'll probably dethatch in July. The lawn has enough grass to choke itself out if I don't. During hot weather, it will take about 8-10 days for the lawn to restore itself after dethatching. I also have Hydretain on the lawn and spoonfeed the trouble spots with more water and manual aeration.

    Did you find that mix worked for you through trial and error or did you do a soil test? Also would it be fine to put a fertilizer down after dethatching and spray a pre emergent like speedzone down at the same time? Thanks!

    • @theresatrickforthat
      @theresatrickforthat  2 месяца назад

      For me, yes. I just did trial and error over a few years time. But a soil test would be a sure fire fast way to see what you need. And so long as the fertilizer you put down doesn’t have extra stuff like a pre or post emergent already in it…seems to me you could put it down at the same time as speed zone. Thanks for watching!

  • @Miguel195211
    @Miguel195211 5 дней назад

    A very small lawn is easy to maintain. As the principle thing is water and being small one can easily water it and not spend a lot of money. I have half an acre and watering is tricky.
    Also, you can fertilize, pre emergent and post, and add amendments to soil with little costs with a small lawn, but very expensive when you have a big yard.
    Nice lawn, but better if you edge.

    I’m a novice, 1st time planting and growing anything, I JUST started with Pennington tall fescue about 4 weeks ago (Zone 8a/North facing front yard) it’s doing really well but I have a few spots I reseeded just about a week ago. I’ve been consistent with watering but I think birds are getting to my seed and we have a little issue with grass wasps in my neighborhood. Any advice? TIA, definitely about to subscribe. 💯

    • @theresatrickforthat
      @theresatrickforthat  Месяц назад +1

      Thanks for the subscription and welcome to the very fun and somewhat addictive lawn care sector! Haha! Sounds like you’re off to a great start!
      Whenever I seed if the ground is fairly bare I definitely like to cover it lightly with something to protect it. Straw is my personal favorite. Helps a lot with the birds. Once the lawn has grown in a bit then I don’t worry about covering the seed anymore, I just put down a crap ton of seed in the bare spots so there’s plenty to go around! Using a starter fertilizer helps a lot as well with swift and strong germination. You can check out my seeding bare spots video for further details: ruclips.net/video/fhOK07C-FXs/видео.htmlsi=aBu3wCWowgwN7Om5 Thanks for watching! Best of luck to you! That's amazing. I just laid down some scotts 3 in 1 but I didn't de-thatch. If I wait a week or so and attempt a light raking/de-thatching, will that disrupt the 3 in 1? Or did I just waste time and money by laying down the 3 in 1 before de-thatching all together? Thank in advance.

    • @theresatrickforthat
      @theresatrickforthat  2 месяца назад +2

      You definitely didn’t waste your money! You’ll see that the 3-1 will have a positive effect on your lawn. I would recommend not doing at kind of de-thatching/raking now that you put that 3-1 product down. I’m afraid any raking or de-thatching will cause the pre-emergent part to not be as effective. The main reason I de-thatch which I mention in the video is to clear out the dead dry grass from the winter allowing the sun to better get to the live grass plants which results in them greening and growing much faster than if I leave the dead grass shading them. However, the sun will eventually do its job, just a little slower if you don’t de-thatch in the early spring…which will be the case for your lawn. So enjoy what you did this go around, and then next spring do the de-thatching before putting down your first application of fertilizer and you’ll green up all the faster! Thanks for watching and best of luck with your lawn! Be sure to subscribe because I’m going to be doing more videos like this throughout the season showcasing what I do for my lawn and then the results!

      You don’t have to dethatch…I just have found my lawn greens up faster if I do so the sun shines more on the live grass plants and I get less shade from the dead stuff accumulated over the winter. Thanks for watching!

Really, the only way to get rid of it otherwise without chemicals would be to dig it out along with an inch or two of the dirt to hopefully get rid of any seeds, bring in some new top soil and then re-seed.
