This clip is of Jennifer Holiday singing from the original play Dream Girls (8 min) ruclips.net/video/rtnKI3ztz9w/видео.htmlsi=TIqE54t799axfTcs
Hey l am from Cape Town, South Africa can u please do a song of Tyla she is a South African singer and song writer. U can play (Water or To Last) any song of her 🙏.
That is not just a background singer. That is THE Anika Noni Rose aka Princess Tiana. We shall put respect on her name. 😂❤
I met her she’s very sweet
Yes too this comment💯
That's TONY AWARD WINNING Anika Noni Rose at that
You’ll recognise Anika Noni Rose’s voice as Tiana from the Princess and the Frog. She’s a brilliant singer! Gets a bit lost in between Beyonce and Jennifer Hudson in this movie, but she’s truly great.
Agreed!
I was about to say that, so true
Is she really Tiana?! OMG!! I love her! ❤❤❤
No offence to Beyonce but Anika Noni Rose leaves her in the dust technique wise.
@@ImMattFromAus No she doesn't and you know that. Let's recognize Anika for her amazing talent without belittling someone else's
Definitely singing in character. Kudos to her for respecting the character.
Well, yeah! Jennifer Hudson can act, she won the Oscar for this performance... After being voted out of American Idol this was her of telling everyone I'm a freaking star!
Also "Eat it, Simon!"
American Idol is not about who sings the best
She’s literally an EGOT
@@ajollypanda4175what is it abt then ?
Anika Noni Rose, the third member, has an extensive catalogue in musical theater! You should check out some of her vocals, she's just as incredible as Beyonce and J Hud :)
Yesss!!! Ms. Princess Tiana
Speaking of, the live performance shows off all of their beautiful voices:
ruclips.net/video/KEYmO3NPUZw/видео.htmlsi=yoA1L8Wsap4Su-Ej
It’s basically a vocal showcase, but they (Anika, Beyoncé, and Jennifer) all sound great together in a live setting. They also sing parts of each other’s songs in this performance, proving that they all have pipes.
If you're gonna do Beyoncé every month. You have to do "The Fighting Temptations" starring a lot of famous singers from back in the 90s. Beyoncé, Angie Stone, Shirley Ceaser, among others. I guarantee you would enjoy it.
Great movie. love the soundtrack.
Yesss
O yesss
This comment should have more likes!
Not enough people review this movie!
Great reaction! This was Jennifer Hudson’s breakout roll after American idol. She didn’t win idol but I believe she won an Oscar for this performance which was DESERVED!! Her voice was/ is out of this world! Beyoncé held back a lot for this part, she said it was one the hardest things to do for her. Being a Beyoncé fan we know she could’ve demolished all those parts!!! lol
Also if you want to watch another movie with Beyoncé singing I recommend “The Fighting Temptations” it is my favorite movie ever and it has a lot of singing in it too!
And now she is an/has "EGOT" status.
@@Theedaedreamyesss to the next movie suggestion
She would not have played Effie well stop the cap she can not do everything!
@@tajsimms8976 And when did I say she could play Effie? I was speaking on her demolishing all of HER parts if she sang them regularly but I appreciate the feedback.
She had to hold back for the character. Remember, it's loosely based off The Supremes, and in that group, Diana Ross had to hold her voice back in order to make it more poppy for the main stream audience. In the film, Deena, which is loosely based on Diana Ross, has a light poppy voice, so Beyonce had to hold back as a result.
lol not quite Diana Ross wasn’t holding her voice back, she never had much of a voice lol…but she had the looks and her voice sounded cute and appealing to white people…that’s why she was pushed to the front instead of the original lead singer…that’s why Beyoncé played Deena….
@@tajsimms8976 Actually she did. If you listen to her rendition of "Home" in "The Wiz," it's obvious she does have a strong singing voice compared to how she sang in The Supremes (with the exception of certain songs like "Love Child").
@@tajsimms8976there’s a video on RUclips of Diana Ross singing gospel with Little Richy. I don’t wouldn’t sleep on Diana’s voice
@@naimahal-azeez1728 Diana Ross was NOT holding her voice back. That was her voice and Berry and Motown loved it cause it was pop. Yes her voice developed a lot esp in the 70’s but Diana Ross never had a Aretha type voice
@@tajsimms8976and there wasn’t a original lead singer. They all sang lead until Diana Ross was made the official lead singer. Even Mary Wilson sang lead at times up until
The perfect contrast between Beyoncé’s vocals in this movie and Beyoncé’s vocals in real life (at the actual time) is her second album, B’Day. Dreamgirls and B’Day were released three months apart in 2006.
They told her to hold back for her character. That’s the whole point
You took the words out my mouth 😂. Right that was the whole point because of the character she was playing and her character had to “find herself” throughout the movie.
Plus to contrast with Jennifer Hudson. Since they are coded as the Supremes, they wanted to maintain a noticeable difference like in Diana and Florence.
Because the movie isnt about Beyonce. It’s a character.
@@cheyenneburgess9717 who said it was..
Right cause Chile Ms Ross ain’t no big singer and it was parts like in listen where bey had to cuff her mouth and keep it cute and slaying cause Sasha was itching to come out but Beyoncé said no ma’am hold up but once this was over and they did them live performances bey said oh y’all gone hear me we aint filming a movie anymore I can take it there and did
Dreamgirls (The film) is based on the broadway show which had characters inspired by multiple Motown artists. Deena of course based on Diana Ross and others. This isn't the reason for Beyonce holding back but her mannerisms mimic Diana. In the Broadway show, Sheryl Lee Ralph voice was so distinct and less belty so Michael Bennett made that Deena's character.
That’s is why she’s held back she supposed sing soft like Diana
That is precisely the reason. The directors had to tell Beyoncé over and over to tone her voice down. She almost didn’t get the part of Deena because her voice was so powerful.
Listen was written as an original for the movie Beyoncé and other wrote it. Also the song and the character deana inspired beyonces 2nd album B’day, an album she made in two weeks. The album was about things she wished deana would have said. And she put listen on it. And crazy enough this album is a fan favorite to this day.
this movie is sooooo damn good!! the songs, the singing, the acting, the story, the plot, the production, the costumes, the hair/makeup, everything is chefs kiss
I watched the full video on Patreon . This is my all time favorite movie. Fun fact: Loretta Devine (the singer in the club wearing purple) was in the original broadway production of Dreamgirls playing as Lorrell. It was a nice tribute to the original.
Thank you for being my Patron
Fun facts:
1. Eddie Murphy was a singer back in the 80s before he became an actor, so they knew he could sing. And I think his voice really suits the style of music in this film!
2. It's funny you mention Diana Ross and the Supremes because the Dreams are actually based off the Supremes
Great facts!!! 😊
Thank you!!! 😊
Eddie Murphy also has a song.
Everyone that jumped the gun because of the title and commented before actually watching the video. 👀👀
Right!!! She clearly states what they are tryna explain to her. Idk why people find the need to be the "Actually" person.
People in her comments love to be asshole know it alls without actually watching the video. Kinda a smart choice on her part. Love that she puts that kind of stuff on her thumbnails. Pisses people off so much they cant help but to comment
Shhh 🤫 Don’t tell them my secrets. Just let them click, comment, and push up my YT algorithm 😈
FYI, yes " Dreamgirls" was loosely based on the story of the Supremes. They actually used a few ques that make it somewhat obvious, like with their first album cover: Supremes- a - Go - Go and when the group became "Deana Jones and the Dreams" was akin to when The Supremes became " Diana Ross and the Supremes" !
Oh this still makes me cry. Such a pack cast and many familiar faces growing up. The ending scene is still so beautiful especially how it fades into glitter ✨️
Jimmy got drugs, jimmy got no job, jimmy got fired !” Had me cracking up 😂
“Is that, Ray something?” I am DEAD lmao girl that’s Jamie Foxx who played Ray Charles
Ok so I’m not the only one who caught that lol. I was like girl what???
@@GDBGDB I fr cried that was so funny to me
Lol the run at 21:51, Beyonce forgot she was supposed to imitate Diana and not herself.
I always wait for your Beyoncé reaction video. Keep them coming. Thanks for this!
More to come!
One of my favourite films - such a stellar cast. The third dream is also a phenomenal singer - Anika Noni Rose
Jennifer Hudson gave this role her all and that Oscar she won for this was over and beyond earned!!!
You walking the entire video got me in stitches
This movie was the introduction to people dismissing beyonce as a vocalist which is crazy. They say she’s a bad actor but she played this part so well that people started saying she couldn’t sing. She cut out her chest voice for this whole movie even weakened her high notes this is after destiny’s child and her singing there was even stronger then this. It’s why she made the b’day album
Really? I don't remember that happening. People said she was a bad actor before this movie, because she is. But this was the first movie where she did a decent job and I heard that a lot.
LOVE THIS REACTION SO MUCH!! thanks for doing this 🥺
Glad you liked it!!
They did a great job with this movie. Really great cast all around ❤
Ma'am the story is about Effie 😂🤣
This was J Huds first big break
I've not laughed so much at your reactions. Thanks
Glad you enjoyed
Everyone talks about the Supremes inspiration. But I heard that Effie White's story in the second act is also inspired by Etta James.
Well since Florence, the inspiration for Effie, passed away in the early 70’s they had to draw on other inspirations since they didn’t want to kill the character off.
It would be cool to see her react to renaissance vocals like from the concerts and also just beys best vocals in general
She's actually been doing that for a while now
@@GrinningLikeaDelicateJamesDeanon patreon? Because i dont have that and can’t get it right now i was just suggesting i didnt know that she was already doing it
I LOVE THIS MUSICAL MOVIES SERIES YOU ARE DOING!!!! Can you put “Chicago” as well in it? ❤
Chicago is great
Omg that would be great!
Fun fact: Eddie Murphy had a short lived music career in the late 80s early 90s. Was hard to break out in both acting and music back then.
If you want to see her really not hold back the live performance with Beyonce & Jennifer Hudson really shows just how much she had to restrain herself for the character.
This made me want to watch dream girls again. I haven’t watched it in like 10 years.
I’m pretty sure Jennifer Hudson’s an EGOT winner so yeah she can ACT 😂
It was her first role so i get the surprise. Like what a role to be your first
@@jocelyngipson7882 right?? I was honestly so shocked this was her first role
Please react to Jennifer Hudson's Prince tribute.. I get chills every single time watching that. Prince would have been so proud❤
Fun fact - the "white singer" who steals cadillac is Broadway star Rory OMalley who has been in Book of Morman and a replacement King in Hamilton
Can we get some real vocal highlights of Beyoncé??
Beyoncé live at Oprah performing Listen
Beyoncé - Halo at Global Citizens 2018
Beyoncé - Dubai Run
Those are basic introductions to bey we need something that not everyone has heard or seen
2 things:
1. Eddie Murphy's sidekick is Anika Noni Rose who also played Tiana in Pruncess and the Frog.
2. I was backstage for a production of Dreamgirls. Act 1 ends right after "You're Gonna Love Me".
Listen was written for the film, so Beyonce would have a big number in the 2nd half of the film, and the song was then incorporated into the stage version of Dreamgirls, but with new lyrics and used as the big song when Deena and Effie reunite after years apart. It works brilliantly.
I'm glad that you had that reaction to the stealing of "Cadillac Car," because that really was regularly happening and that moment was to highlight that truth to the masses.
Super excited for this one! Thanks for all the great videos 🖤
You are so welcome!
Erwin you’re the best! ❤
Yes, they basically stole the supreme story. Diana Ross wanted to sue them. The only difference between Effie and the character she was based off of the person Florence Ballard, actually died about 5 to 6 years after they fired her from the Supremes and they wanted to kill the character off in the play but the original Effie on Broadway Jennifer Holliday fought for her to have a happy ending
can’t wait!!! hope you can react to beychella as well

@@rpwprpwprecious nice!!! Her patreon community is great!
Listening to how Beyonce sounds now, you really hear how "thin" her voice/tone was in comparison to now (it was thin, but still powerful, I don't know if that makes sense).
You should watch their medley at the Oscar !!💞 You’ll hear the real vocals LIVE it’s so interesting
Yes, "Dreamgirls" is based loosely on The Supremes: Effie(Florence Ballard), Lorell(Mary Wilson), Deena(Diane "Diana" Ross). Florence met Mary at a talent show and they became friends and decided to start a singing group. They were shortly joined by Smokey Robinson's neighbor, Diane and later Barbara Martin who would be replaced by Betty McGlown. They were named The Primettes. When they were signed by Motown Florence chose the name Supremes. When Betty left the group they became a trio. They All sang lead in the beginning. After several flops, their first of 12 #1's was "Where Did Our Love Go" in 1964. African Americans wouldn't be full citizens until the Voting Rights Act of 1965. During the height of the Civil Rights Movement they would become household names and international stars alongside the Beatles.
The point is that Effie is supposed to be the powerhouse vocalist who is overlooked in favor of Deena's smoother, lighter, more "mainstream" sound.
The dream girls era is when Beyoncé’s voice changed. After she filmed this movie then dropped B day, by the time The Experience tour came around she was a totally different performer and singer. This was the era that made me obsessed with Beyonce.
Beyoncé made her second solo album “B’Day” after filming this movie because she was inspired to say everything Deena COULDN’T say in the film. Because Deena was so trapped and often voiceless, B’Day is an album filled with self expression.
In one of the scenes Curtis (Jamie foxx) tells Deena (beyonce) the reason she is the lead is because her voice has no personality so there for beyonce had to hold back on real life
Happy to have Beyoncé in the channel 💕🤧
I’m pretty sure in either the movie or London production with Amber Riley there are undertones that Deena has fertility issues and really really wants a baby. The irony that they were playing out each other’s dreams.
Jennifer Hudson is one of the few people who've won EGOT!!! Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony🤗😊🎶🎤
Not sure if it’s in the comments already but at 5:12 the surprise of their music being stolen. That was literally what most, if not all black artists went through. It happened so often that most people don’t notice it or care to notice it. I’m sure it still happens today.
C.C. is also the Green Lightspeed Rescue Ranger.
You should watch the 1982 Tony's awards to see how Jennifer Holiday sang this song.
2:50 OH SPILL MAJOR SPILL GIRL
The "Cadillac Car" was imitating real life. Especially back in the 50s, a lot White artists would cover Black artists songs and get more play than the Black artists. Little Richard talked about this a lot.
Pat Boone's cover of Tutti Frutti still gives me pain
@@equusquaggaquagga536 I shuttered when I discovered it in a Todd In The Shadows video on Debby Boone.
Elvis’s You Ain’t Nothing But a Hound Dog comes to mind
@@hali_55 Curtis actually directly mentioned that in the film.
Beyonce was told to hold back her vocals in whole movie
Yes you are right, the Broadway show Dreamgirls is literally the story of Diana Ross & the Supremes. The show was threatened with lawsuits from Motown and were not allowed to use the Music so they had to create new songs and the story was thinly veiled but still clearly the Supremes. So Beyoncé was quite literally playing Diana Ross! The characters name was changed from Diana Ross to Deena Jones.
This is Jennifer’s first movie and she won an Oscar for her performance.
the fact that anika was 33 and Jennnifer and Beyoncé 24 at the time, is overwhelming
Please react to the songs Beyoncé has from the Cadillac Records movie soundtrack! ❤️
you should react to their live medley at the 2007 oscars
Oh My gosh a walking watch party is such a cool idea❤
come get your step in!
Love this movie. So many great performances. Great reaction!!!
There is so much talent in this movie I'm surprised the Earth's crust didn't crack from the weight of it.
Listen was added for hethe movie but they later added ot to the musical as a duet between Deena and Effie.
Love your videos on Beyoncé
Anika Noni Rose was Tiana in Princess and a Frog!!!
Like various pop legends, DIANA ROSS while in Supremes developed like a baby voice to cross over and dominate pop. Similar to Deena in the movie, Diana was always quite the vocalist and could do a lot more. The pushed her vocals stunningly on THE BOSS album.
Comparing Diana Ross whilst in the supremes to the boss album is not fair. Her voice developed and matured like everybody voice does. The boss came out in 79’ so ofc course it was different then her 60’s voice but Diana ross didn’t hold her voice back, what you got in the 60’s was her voice.
React to everytime beyonce proved that she can flawlessly sing live by it's perfect on RUclips ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Watch the Stevie Wonder Tribute with Beyoncé, so so good!
You’re on a treadmill right? 😅😂 but thank you!!!! We’ve been wanting this for a while!!
When the point and story line goes right over your head
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
You need to watch the dreams girls live at the Oscar’s performance you will see there just how much beyonce held back and how she still lets everyone else shine
Beyonce Live experience tour !!!!!!
I saw an interview of her where she said she had to hold back, she wanted to put more power in her voice, growl, put more soul but she had to hold back for the role.
Jennifer Hudson was 25 during Dreamgirls
James Brown died on Christmas Day....when Dreamgirls was released.
Fine, I’ll go watch Dremgirls again.
The show was based on the lives of The Supremes and all the behind closed doors drama they went through
Thank you for doing this!!! You made my morning
The guy who plays the evil snake Curtis is the legendary Jamie Foxx since you forgot his name.
Listen is An Original Song recorded by Beyoncé for The Dreamgirls Soundtrack and later added to Beyoncé B'Day Album
You are right, this movie or u should say the original stage play was loosely based on the supremes, Jaime's Chatacter being a portrayal of Berry Gordy. I think they werent quite ready to call out certain people at the time.
If you want a vocal treat check out The fighting temptations Beyonce plays im there
Grease reaction would be so fun
Diana Ross and the Supremes and Berry Gordy hate the show and movie because even though it is fictional, it put their drama on blast. It calls them out sort of.
Guys, even in real life, Beyonce didn't start really belting until AFTER this movie experience. Being around stage singers who can really sing can have an effect. Her album that followed this movie..."Bday" was the 1st album that truly showed off the vocal range that is so normal to us today. It was immediately noticeable that her voice was much more powered on that album than any that came before it. I always joked that there was NO WAY she could leave the world believing Jennifer Hudson's voice was stronger than hers 😂. That's why today, her singing in Dreamgirls seems reserved to us today. It also should go without saying that the character EFFIE was supposed to have a stronger voice than Beyoncé's character's voice..... tiktoker G.A.TURKS
I saw this in the cinema... and I will never forget, when JHud belted the final note of And I'm Tellin' You.... a sustained standing ovation. When Beyoncé finished the final note of Listen, there were 4 smattered claps.
The irony of Foxx telling Beyoncé's character, "I chose you because your voice is hollow... I can put whatever I want into it"... because that has always been how I've felt about her. Technically and mechanically, Beyoncé is a great singer, but Ive never connected with her emotionally, her voice was empty
I suggest checking out her newer music. It’s very emotionally connected. Different from her days of Destinys Child
@@SongsFromASuitcase I'm current on her catalog. With as saturated as she is, its nearly impossible to not be... but there in lies the problem. From the very beginning, Beyoncé has been manufactured to be this... she's a Musically Engineered Organism.
Her music is trendy. Her skill is undeniable. But not once has she moved me to tears, or even near tears... and I'm a big ol' baby-man
@@Rated314Kelly is the one who did it for me in that group.
@@TraceyJeanHow? 😂 You barely hear her in their songs

Also alot of ppl get the "Tiny Joe" scene in the first scene m, wrong. The talent show wasnt set up, what he said was "they wasnt going to win anyways", as if to say they werent better, not that it was rigged. A lot of ppl misread that scene
They would be perfect as the muses
What version of Dream Girls is this? She has clips I’ve never seen and this is my favorite movie 😂😂
That’s what I said! Lmao it’s been 10+ years and I’ve never seen certain scenes even some songs! I also have the DVD and none of those are in there I was so confused!
Eddie should’ve won the Oscar alongside Jennifer.
Fighting temptations and Cadillac records!! I definitely, like strongly recommend looking up the history of the movies before reviewing them because it’ll make the vocal choices a lot more clear. Also the stealing of black songs (songs by black artists) to be given to white artist back then and today is (was) very common
If you could react to her version of ‘I’d rather go blind’ it’s in a movie amazing btw
