  • This lovely production, written by Adrian Mitchell and first produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2001, really deserves more attention. It is one of the most complete theatrical adaptations of the Alice books to date and includes a rather accurate portrayal of Charles Dodgson. Alice is played by Katherine Heath. Although contemporary reviews were not positive, more recent productions have been better received. It was most recently performed at the Jersey Arts Centre on the Isle of Jersey in 2023, where it was received positively.
If you're interested, the script is available from Oberon Books here:

Thanks to my dear friend With Dreaming Eyes of Wonder for finding this and helping with this description, and many thanks to Sugar and Dirt for going through the amazing effort to get a copy of this from the RSC archives and edit it 🙂

The fact these versions actually included the characters of the Fawn warms my heart. Love it!

I have been wanting to see this since I first read a notice regarding its imminent production.
Having have watched both parts now, I'm very appreciative of its faithfulness to the books. I like the overall art design and the way in which the illusion aspects were cleverly overcome (i.e. the rabbit hole, the size changes in the hall of doors, etc). Seeing Alice portrayed as the original Alice Pleasance Liddell is also a nice addition. I also like the inclusion of the often neglected Fawn Sequence from THROUGH THE LOOKING-GLASS and appreciated the switch to a Narnia-like Faun in place of a young deer.
But while I don't know what they actually wrote, I'm afraid I'm unusually with the critics on this outing: the entirety falls flat for me and I find it a curiously non involving watch. It feels like they are rushing through the scenes one after the other without any real feeling towards the story.
Still, I want to thank you for going to the trouble of hunting it down and posting it. I'm glad I had the chance to see it for the reasons I did like about it.
It's always interesting to see different production teams translate Carroll's dream imagery in cinematic and theatrical terms. This is no exception on that point.
