Hi guys.. 2 things: 1 - try going back to the garage who fitted your reconditioned engine. I would just tell them that their reconditioning work wasn’t up to scratch? Worth trying. 2 - Morgan is a Luton van. You’ve spent a lot of time and money on converting the box. You don’t want to lose that. The beauty with box vans is that you can remove the box and fit it onto another platform van. It is possible. That’s exactly my reason of doing my Luton van conversion. There are options. Keep your heads up guys. Plans fall through. It’s normal. You’re young and healthy. Plenty of time to do what you want to do! Good luck.

I’d definitely get on to the garage that did the engine. You have a good reach so I’d use that to your advantage and name and shame them if they’re not helpful or give you some money back. You’ve had two mechanics tell you the pipe alone was done wrong.

Totally agree with the comment 1, there does seem to be a issue with the fitting of the hose, that in turn has caused all these problems. You should not be facing these issues having spent 11K on a new / recon. engine so recently!

100% the garage that fitted the reconditioned engine have complete liability here! Effectively the van even sat unused for 3 months so they have a lot to answer for! Good luck getting it sorted either way 👍🏻

You’re right, they need to go back to the garage where they had the engine fitted it shouldn’t do that being a new engine or refurbished engine. They should sort it out for them.

At 11,000 the mechanics shop who fitted your engine is on the hook.
Request your warranty be activated. Head gaskets are not that bad, cracked head is another thing..
Didn't you also have your radiator changed recently?.the mechanic that changed your engine should have caught any compression points if they rested the new engine at all..the pressure and temperature in the rad would have shown, youd be filling it up every few days if the hose was craccked...so if it's a cracked head the engine installer may replace it.

Hi guys. So sorry your van has broken down again. I'm a mechanic and my advice is contact the garage that installed the engine 9 months ago. It sounds like they've badly routed the top hose causing it to rub through, and that's caused the head gasket to go. That's 100% what I would be doing, Hope you get it sorted x

Unfortunately, I think they'll get out of it because Liam didn't notice the temperature increasing until it finally tripped the emergency stop engine warnings. By then the damage was done!
Although the garage caused the coolant loss due to poor hose routing, I think they'll put the blame on driver error for not seeing the rise in engine temp..
To be fair though, not many of us would!!

Even so, there must surely be a guarantee on the engine, and yes, whose bodged up the hose. Have to say I was also pretty unimpressed with the RAC leaving you stranded at an inadequate garage, and dragging things out to get you moved to a better place.

What a bummer - have you made a complaint to the garage who supplied and fitted the engine ? If they have routed the top hose incorrectly then it’s a poor workmanship issue that has caused the coolant loss and consequential engine damage. It should be coved under warranty and if it was a repeatable garage they should be covered under their liability insurance. Hope this helps ?

bit late to say now but when this happens turn off the engine but keep the ignition on so the fan can still switch on to cool whats left water wise & help cool the engine. This goes for older engines. Newer ones may have a override for this to happen anyway. This might help someone down the line.

Horrible news and so sorry to see you going through this again. Full time van life is a tough gig and your experience shows that it can be a wild roller coaster ride at times. This trouble will pass and one day you will smile at what happened. All the best to you both ❤️

My heart really goes out to you. Such terrible luck. I have just lost my van (Ivan), my home as he just kept breaking. Its so hard to deal with when its not just a weekend van and its your home. I am now in temporary accommodation through the local council as Ivan giving up on me left me homeless, so I really hope you can find a solution to continue what is, when things go your way, an amazing life on the road. Best wishes :D

I'm so very sorry to hear about this horrible news! I think the folks who fitted the reconditioned engine may have some responsibility in this. Thank goodness you have each other for solace and comfort. If it were me, I'd have to face it alone, which I've done before - a very similar situation (with my car when the timing belt broke). I remember how overwhelmed I felt praying, praying. I feel your pain viscerally, with tears in my eyes. Sending you both love and light. ❤

I would definitely be bypassing the EGR Cooler first and retesting, before pulling the engine apart! Seen way to many misdiagnosed head gaskets on the 2.2 for this reason..

Hi guys, I'm really sorry to see this happening again, I did say that when you got Morgan, if the running gear is no good, you can always put the body on a different chassis cab. I know what happened wasn't directly because its a Modern vehicle but modern vehicles don't last, if this had happened on an old Ford cargo it wold have been fine after fitting a new hose and refilling it with water. Now you can drive a 7.5t. I would look to fit the body on an old school chassis cab, I don't drive or ride anything under 36 years old, and most are over 40. I'm currently restoring a 1955 bedford rl 4x4 ex army lorry for massive overland adventure in a year or so, the truck has only had brake and steering upgrades the rest is original and i intend driving it for many thousands of miles and it will do it. If you want to discuss some ideas, please get in touch, I won't be offended if you think I'm raving mad.

Hi both - The solicitor on LBC radio programme last night was discussing these sort of cases. You need to contact the installers for which you parted with a ton of money - quote the “Consumer Rights Act 2015 “ then discuss the “ careless installation “ issues if they don’t come up with a salvage plan. This solicitor is always pushing for payments to be on a credit card for all the usual reasons. I’ve gone to small claims courts a couple of times in past if all else fails. Once on a not “fit for purpose boat” on a private sale; a neighbour whose tree fell on my van and I was told by him to fork out on my insurance for repairs, not theirs. I won both times. This 2015 Act seems to make life easier than it was back then. Sorry to go on, but you both are too nice to have this sort of thing take over your lovely lives. Jen x

OK. Think of it this way. If your boiler, radiators, roof, sewage, drainage, guttering, etc etc needed replacing on the house, or if your car, washing machine, dryer etc etc breaks down, then one just has to get on with it. 11K disappears pretty quick. You were looking for a cheaper and freer life but now you are getting a bit of pushback, some of that due to your own lack of experience and planning, and some of it down to over-reliance on the trust in other peoples work, which can’t be guaranteed these days. Life is not all smiles and we all pay for it in different ways. My advice: plan for the worst and hope for the best. You’re quite lucky that Dad doesn’t mind you parking your house for free by his gaff whilst you were about to whizz off on another jolly. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a van guy (long in the tooth now), but I do know what a spanner is, and how to daily inspect an engine. The last greatest episode was dismantling the starter motor and gearbox in a carpark in a rainstorm. So, whilst I’m wholeheartedly in favour, there’s no such thing as a free lunch. I wish you the very best. You will get through this. And you’ll be wiser.

Hi guys. You've just started coming up on my feed and I'm now subscribed. Iv been living full time in my van since August after a seperation. My first winter now. I feel Your pain as my van has just failed it's MOT with a list as long as my arm.. It's a 20 yo vivario So it's starting to make me realise that you need a back up plan and emergency funds to cover the worse case in van life. But not having a perm home somewhere can feel daunting.
I will now binge watch the next lot of vlogs to see how things work out. Wish me luck with my MOT work as she is my home on wheels like yours is to you. Keep smiling 😃

They can't pressure test it with a patch on the old hose as it will always boil over as it won't hold pressure. New hose then test. The video suggests they tried with just a patch on again. The system has to presurise to prevent boiling over.

First, I'm so sorry for you both. Second, you don't see many Morgan camper conversions. I think there's a reason for this. Get rid. If you have a warranty on the refurbed engine, use it. Then get rid. If not, review your options. Keep making your great videos - its your talent and your income. I'll keep watching. Thanks.🤔

Absolutely rotren luck. Unfortunately it is not an engine fault. Once the coolant was lost the engine will be cooking. The head gasket will fail. Its not always easy to spot either. The hose should never have been rubbing to cause a split. Its been fitted incorrectly if that proves to be the case. You will have come back with the garage that fitted the top hose IMO. Good luck

My heart breaks for you both. If this is of any help I will tell you of a problem I ad with my car.....I was returning home after midnight when I noticed the overheating warning light come on. (No temp gauge in a Vauxhall Zafira) Stuck in the middle of nowhere 5 miles from home I put more water into the engine. Next day got a mechanic to look at it. Same thing head gasket, quoted me at least £900. water coming out of expansion tank.....I took myself to Halfords purchased a bottle of sealant costs about £40. This has done the trick for me. I think the product might be called Silver Seal. There are cheaper products but a waste of money. Hope this helps for you. Certainly saved me money.
