  • I helped my neighbor install this DVR in his house and we learned a lesson about using baluns to transmit the video signal over Cat5 cable. The quality of the video and the feature set weren't as good as the Night Owl 1080p systems that I have installed, but it's still pretty good and costs a few bucks less than the comparable Night Owl system.

    *We purchased this after moving, and previously had a spotlight **Newest.Technology** cam with solar power. The wired pro cam has much better light (about the same as a bright porch light), and the image is significantly more clear with much better details.*

    Thank you for this video... I have CAT5 throughout my house already and haven't been using it at all since we're all wireless now. I have a roll of CAT5 sitting in the garage... now I know what to use that surplus for! Much appreciated, thanks for sharing!

    Anybody knows if we can still visualize the video if it's not connected to internet if we try to access by a monitor in the house

      I would check all of the connections and test the power supplies. If the DVR is broken then you may have to replace it which could mean an opportunity for upgrade in size or quality.

    a good thing to mention.
    once a camera is registered on one account, it will never be able to be used on another account, you can no longer sell it and be used by someone else

      This "feature" turned me off to more recent releases of Night Owl systems. In order to reduce the number of calls requesting password resets, they pushed the maintenance to your email provider and an automated system.
      The older A10 and 960H series of Night Owl had the ability to share non-admin access with others (like tenants in an apartment building), but the newer ones do not. I prefer that the credentials be maintained on the DVR and not stored on a manufacturer's web server.

    5:32 So did you ever find out what was the cause of that Ghosting and prism color when you used the CAT5 wire? Was it that your isolation at baluns that might have caused some unwanted antenna and transmission or did you change the polarity of the color vs white in Video signal port, to see if that is the cause? I say there is a simple explanation if you could farther dig into it.

    • @samsen201
      @samsen201 5 лет назад

      Maybe you have too long BNC metal exposed that cause some unwanted signal alteration/grounding etc.

    • @SAPLSMW
      @SAPLSMW  3 года назад

      The ghosting was crossover to the power connector which then passed the signal to the other camera via crossover. Separating the cameras onto their own wires resolved it.

    Do you have any idea how to clear an HDD error?
    I removed my HDD and cannot get the system to stop Beepinh

    • @SAPLSMW
      @SAPLSMW  3 года назад

      A HDD error likely means that the mechanical hard drive has failed; if you take the hard drive out then the system may still believe that it has failed. I would install a replacement hard drive and search through the menu system for a way to format it.

    Hi! Any idea why it doesn’t give me the option of setting up my account? It just goes straight to the login screen and says the username is “admin”

    • @SAPLSMW
      @SAPLSMW  3 года назад

      I suspect that there is just one default account and that it is "admin". Likely there is a default password that, after a 5-second google search, seems to be 12345.

    Where is the port setting on the ezviz dvr? I need to change it to port 81

      I'm not sure it has a web interface. I RTFM'd, but didn't see anything about a web interface there.

      @@SAPLSMW I contacted ezviz and they said the port can't be changed from 80. My isp controls my router and opened port 81 for me long time ago..... so i can't get it on the net but the apps work anyway. Thanks anyway

    • @SAPLSMW
      @SAPLSMW  5 лет назад

      @@Per409 My ISP adds a "feature" where they block port 80 to "protect me from viruses" and I can opt out of that if I pay 10 times more for the commercial package. Gee, thanks.
      Consider another router. DD-WRT allows for port redirection so that port 10080 (or whatever) outside is forwarded to port 80 on an internal IP address.

    does cat 6 works?

    • @SAPLSMW
      @SAPLSMW  6 лет назад

      Potentially; the pairs are physically separated by plastic, but only by a couple of millimeters. The fact that the twists in the pairs aren't at the same rate will also reduce cross talk somewhat. I still wouldn't try Cat6 for this camera system unless you're considering a complete drop for each camera.
      I stopped using Cat5 with baluns because of the risk of cross talk except when I run a dedicated drop for each camera which makes POE a possibility if that's ever desired. Running the cables from the manufacturer doesn't take much more effort, so it's a good policy if you're married to analog.

    I know this is a late comment but do these cameras need WiFi to work?

      Yes

    • @SAPLSMW
      @SAPLSMW  3 года назад

      I think the cameras will still work and the DVR will continue recording, but your phone app likely won't work without the DVR (and your phone) being connected to the internet.

  • @NevilleTheWizard

    You ended up with crosstalk because you untwisted the the cat 5 cables wayyy to much. I don’t understand why 1.) you would do that and 2.) not just use what comes with the product

    • @SAPLSMW
      @SAPLSMW  6 лет назад

      I'm not sure that untwisting one inch is going to cause a problem--especially when the baluns keep the untwisted pairs from touching each other. I use Cat5 because it is easier to run one wire with no connectors to drive two or three cameras than it is to pull two wires with connectors on them.

    • @NevilleTheWizard
      @NevilleTheWizard 6 лет назад +1

      SAPLSMW Then why would you not have just opted for POE cameras? It literally delivers power over cat 5,5e, or cat 6 without untwisting the pairs. Also, at one point in your video you had them untwisted, what looked like, about a full foot and a half. Cat 5 is week with noise reduction. Also, I don’t know what system you bought but my EZVIZ cameras all come with one cord that has two connectors on each. For me that isn’t a big issue

    • @SAPLSMW
      @SAPLSMW  6 лет назад

      My friend bought this analog system and I like inexpensive analog systems; they deliver a comparable quality for much less than POE systems. Additionally, many "POE" systems are just analog systems over Cat5.
      I did pull several feet of wire from the Cat5 bundle, but I left the pairs twisted if you look closely. Cat5 is indeed weak on noise reduction even with the twists in place.
      Your install wasn't a big deal for you because you probably weren't doing 60-foot runs through a 3-on-12 pitch roof stuffed with central air condition ducts and old hidden roofs obscured while building multiple add-ons over the last 70 years. I was.
