No they don't. I attended an HBCU and it was the best experience I ever had. I've also seen Southern University perform in person and watching them live is way better than watching a video of them. Not downplaying the videos of the Human Jukebox, but hearing the power and intensity of Southern University with their music selections and their physical activity on the field is something to admire. The marching bands of HBCUs in a whole put their hearts into the halftime performances year and year.
But they should. They have some outstanding bands. I didn't attend an HBCU or any college for that matter. But my High School band director, Mr. Ernest White was a FAMU alumni. His brother, Julian, was the band director there at one time. Mr. White showed me some VHS tapes of their halftime show, and when I saw they had five Drum Majors I was freaking out. And they had these cool capes. I was Drum Major my Senior year and I told Mr. White, dude, I gotta have a cape, and he got me one. lol. He was a good guy and is currently a member of our High School band FB page. I'm glad he's still with us.
I STILL say you need to actually see one of these HBCU bands (ANY of them) actually performing one of their on-the-field halftime shows. You get to see the whole band strutting their stuff just like these dancers did in this video. It is literally a life-changing experience. These sit-down (or in the grandstands) shows don't do them justice. I played trumpet in high school and college and it's not really blowing. You have to literally "buzz" your lips into the mouthpiece at different tightness levels depending upon if the notes are high or low. It's the same technique for every brass instrument.
My mom went to FAMU and I went with her (teen mom). As she studied, I would go on campus and watch the band practice. It was magic! A free show of the badest band in the land. It's so. Artistic, soulful and rich in culture.
Idk why but this comment made me tear up. People so often say we African Americans have no culture. So seeing so many from outside of our community appreciate our style is heart warming ❤
Imagine standing in front of this band during the big hit. You will literally FEEL the music hit you in your chest. You will feel their air blast you. It is an incredible feeling. I was in a big college marching band for 4 years, but nothing compares to an HBCU band like Southern.
Its so incredible to be a part of a marching band. Not only does the music vibrate you ur a part of that massive noise and it feels so exhilarating I wish I was still in band
Thanks for exploring America's "HBCU's" it's apart of our Afro-American culture in the South. I'm a proud alumi of a HBCU. Not only did I get an exemplary education for renowned professors. The universities always made sure we continue on with tradition, we continue our culture through the arts, sports and academics in the total HBCU experience. It's an American treasure hidden in plain sight.
WOOOOOOOWWWWW! I HAVE NEVER CRIED DURING ANY BAND'S PERFORMANCE BEFORE. BUT THIS SONG IS SO AWESOME WITH SOUTHERN'S PLAYING IT. THE HORNS......? UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!!
Thank you for recognizing both Southern University and Jackson State University. It’s tough being apart of the best HBCU bands in America but I really thank you for the recognition. 💙 #LuvDaBoom
Southern band is even more amazing in person! I’m an alumni of Southern and the videos do the band no justice at all just imagine in person! Even better in person!
Tidbits...Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) were built because the federal and local laws in the 1800s banned black Americans from attending the white universities. Luckily, they allowed blacks to build their own universities. And we are so proud of the traditions, the bands, the family atmosphere, etc. that is uniquely different from the other universities. I grew up attending Florida A&M University games and watching their famous "Marching 100" band. Thanks for enjoying it!...You MUST watch these bands dance and march "on the field".
Southern girl here. It never ceases to amaze me. I always wondered what people from other countries think of our college marching bands & dance teams, especially from the south.
Please do the video of Southern "Human Jukebox" marching in a parade and performing "Torture" and "Neck". It's a St, Patrick's Day in Louisiana and an absolute blast. The LSU fans go nuts and join in when they perform the Neck song under the bridge. It's unlike any of the other band videos you've done in a way I'm sure you will enjoy. It's a real party. lol
YES!!! FINALLY!!! MORE HBCU BANDS!!! and for the trumpets : they aren't really allowed to smile. i believe they were in the middle of a battle. and you're looking at 30+ trumpets alone
Awesome ! This is my Daughter’s school ! I have ❤️d the Human Jukebox since I was a kid ! Simply the Best ! Shoutout Baton Rouge . Louisiana! ⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️🥰
Blasting away like that is such an amazing feeling. Once I figured out how to actually put air through my horn, there was no going back. It is exhilarating.
The dance style is called me giurette and a lot of people try to do major at and they're doing a simple major at moves. If you want to really see something, watch the show, bring it. And the fact that major at dancing is so it's hard because you have something what they call bucking, and it is almost 38 counts, and you have to be able to push through it, it is difficult and amazing, and thank you for recognizing the south and us
One video I recommend is "WSSU Ram Madness: Red Sea of Sound Band Playing Get Up" please, they're the school I plan on attending and Id love to see what you have to say about them!
Thank you Courtney. I absolutely love your channel. Hopefully you can get to the US to see the band in person. Im an alum of Southern. They are n award winning HBCU Band. You should check out the Honda Battle of the Bands and, Bayou Classic halftime shows. Southern US often imitated but never ever duplicated. 💙💛💙💛
Same school my Arkansas Razorbacks beat 79-44 in basketball about a month ago. Clearly their band, if a score was kept, would beat our band about the same.
When you aren't allowed to play wind instruments in marching band, here's a solution. Consider reacting to these two videos: ruclips.net/video/KTmAAWpbqJM/видео.html and ruclips.net/video/S7IfrdgV4PY/видео.html. They are both short but well worth the view!
New subscriber here love your reaction to our culture at hbcus...though I graduated from another HBCU (Morgan State) I respect all HBCU bands and Southern does a hell of a job with Bill Conti "going the distance" that would be a good one for you to react to...
❤️ Your Channel . Done ✅ out Southern University playing Welcome to the Jungle @ Georgia State ! It’ll give you goosebumps. Then watch their 1/2 time performance and performance in the stands , marching in , & Marching out , percussion section Funk Train Performance 🎭. ⚜️⚜️⚜️⚜️ ❤️ From Louisiana!
Hi Courtney, great channel I invite you to view the Largest HBCU in America NC A&T State University Cold Steel Marching Band (NCA&T) Aggie FanFest Full Performance 2024. Keep up the good work.
U should react to some videos by Grambling State University’s World Famed Tiger Marching Band and Orchesis Dance Company. They performed for Beyoncé in Coachella.
Not really. Beyoncé flew a few band members out here (I live in L.A.) for a commercial shoot for her Ivy Park clothing line. They didn’t actually perform at Coachella and never performed with Bey. On the other hand, the SU Dolls has performed with her at the Super Bowl and the Lemonade visual album and was featured in her Homecoming documentary.
@@serpentine913serp6 Do ur research. They definitely performed at the Super Bowl with Beyonce and for her at her private Coachella event for Adidas. They were actually the FIRST band and dancers to ever perform at a Super Bowl - with Motown. ruclips.net/video/_MvAIoGqQfU/видео.html
Thank you for showing us love. HBCUs and Black Americans rarely get any spotlight in these reactions.

THE SOUTHERN DANCING DOLLS. AND THE CAPTAIN IS MS. KAYLA PITMAN. She was Captain for 2024 & 2015. WITH THE AMAZING HUMAN JUKEBOX
your reaction is so cute! There's nothing like HBCU band culture. It's so entertaining and the musicianship is excellent.

I was there and SU started it off with Hello. The volume was way up there that year. You should go to battle of the bands in New Orleans one year
Plan for Honda Battle Of The Bands. Super Huge HBCU Marching Band event held annually at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, GA.

As someone from the south, I’ve always been more into the HBCU bands! Y’all give EVERYTHING in your performances and I can feel it!!!
Love your enthusiasm
Showing where some of our prestigious young Black American men and women hail from. Thank you so much for showing this!!
Courtney, free lesson #1:
Never blow into a trumpet. Goal: Blow from your body THROUGH the trumpet. Practice time!!
The neighbors can't hear the music so they just hear her screaming at random times...
Blasting away like that is such an amazing feeling. Once I figured out how to actually put air through my horn, there was no going back. It is exhilarating.
You should attend the Honda battle of the bands showcase in Atlanta. It showcases HBCU bands like southern and jackson state.
