  • The first question of the morning: "Where's the ICW?" We found it.
And the infamous "Hell Gate" through which boaters must pass to get from the Ogeechee River to the Little Ogeechee River in Georgia. It was tight but we timed it right and passed through without incident.
Thank you for watching! We appreciate you.
Guy and Vickie, and Sailor too!

I thought this was for the real Hell Gate in the East river, NYC. That's a fun ride!!

I've heard that about the NYC Hell Gate. I don't think we'll be going that way, though.

I was so worried going through there. I made Mike hold for 1/2 hour till tide was right. We made it through fine. Bit it is nerve wracking.

We were pretty antsy about it too and also tried to time our arrival to high tide. In the end, Hell Gate was easier than a 3 or 4 mile section we transited a couple hours earlier. We actually touched bottom there right in the marked channel!
It all turns out well, though, doesn't it? :-)

Not Portuguese Man of Wars in our Ga waters, just large jellyfish... Use Bob's Tracks fore Aquamaps for your navigation through the ICW, it's a huge help. Welcome to Georgia!

Thank you for your kind welcome and for the info about the jellyfish.
Bob's Tracks are magical, aren't they? We generally run Navionics on our Garmin Multi-Function Display, Aquamap with Bob's tracks on an iPad, and then either another Aquamap or Navionics on another iPad. We set them at different zoom levels - one close in, one at medium zoom, and then the one with Bob's tracks zoomed way in. That and our eyeballs keep us out of trouble...most of the time. 😎😉

    What is the ICW?

Good question! The American Sailing Association gives a good description and history of the Intracoastal Waterway.
      --------------------
The Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) is a network of navigable channels, rivers, bays, and canals that stretches more than 3,000 miles along the eastern and Gulf coasts of the United States, from Boston, Massachusetts to Brownsville, Texas. The ICW provides a protected and inland route for boats to travel up and down the coast, avoiding the dangers of the open sea and the need to go around the Florida peninsula.
The ICW was originally developed as a commercial waterway in the early 1900s...(more at asa.com/news/2023/02/21/what-is-the-intracoastal-waterway/).
