Man, this film is a little talked about film from Scorsese's filmography and it doesn't appear much on the list of his best films, but for me it's one of his best films and a true masterpiece! With excellent performances, and in my opinion, Michelle Pfeiffer should have been nominated for an Oscar for best actress for this film, Scorsese manages to talk about the pain of love and makes a philosophical study that makes us wonder why some people give in to passions and others do not do this. The film is for few because it has its own rhythm and a language that not everyone understands and can capture, but it is an incredible work of art!!!
I agree. I adore this movie. It has so many layers. It is pure perfection. In fact I believe it is intentionally excessive in its perfection, so as to stress the oppressive atmosphere.

The beauty of watching this film was it was based in The Gilded Age when America was in the peak of wealth & fortune 1870s - 1890s. Countess Olenska a woman ahead of her time represented a new way of living life as free woman who wished to divorce the Count for his cruel malice towards her. Newland Archer a man who lived by the rules of New York Society was contempt to marry into one of New York’s oldest families - May a charming, warm, loving girl but not very bright.
May was bright. She was also conforming to the standard behaviors and expectations of women/wives of the time. That was part of the resentment Newland had for her. She wouldn’t speak her mind, express her own options. But in the end was very smart behind the scenes securing what she wanted.
May was “ bright” but Archer found her boring and uninteresting, as he was also. Countess Olenska was out of his league. May was Archer’s “lane,” but he didn’t like his own “lane,” and yearned for a “bird of paradise,” that he didn’t have the “stones” for.
i don't know if it's intentional but the way Archer's face closeup is framed with the white collar at the bottom of the screen reminds me of a priest. Considering the subject and Scorsese's Catholic background this could be intentional.

If you think May is not very bright, you have missed the point. Her cunning is astounding.
