Interesting offering from Benchmade it’d be super cool if when you open the box a fist shot out and punched you in the balls then it would be worth it .
I have been thinking about pricing lately. Obviously a huge difference on customs and production as well as small shops and even no cnc manual shops. Hard as someone on the outside to say how much time it takes to make a complete knife. I have worked for a bunch of machine shops over the years. All have varied processes and time requirements to make similar products. Production shops with many machines should be able to make products more efficiently. But that’s not always true. I think we as the consumers have to approach products like the narrow as what does this give me that others folder don’t and is it worth the price. For me personally it’s nothing I value but for others it might be the exact knife they have been searching for. Such a deep topic of conversation. Might need to do a video chat about this myself

Sorry, but I love this knife, I got it on day one of the release and it has been my EDC carry since. I have over a dozen Bugout’s including the Gold Class (which cost more) but this knife is next level. The price might be high for some but I haven’t found another full size Ti knife this light, this thin, and this easy to carry everyday in my pocket. I’ve seen a lot of posts about how other knives are better, cheaper etc and then their examples are thicker, heavier, more expensive, made in China, etc. Or how R&D costs next to nothing because it’s all computerized. If it’s so easy and cheap then why haven’t all the other manufacturers done it. I could be wrong but at least put up any example of a full size knife that is this thin, this light, made of Ti, and American made at this price point, to compare it to. I’m pretty sure one doesn’t exist. At least give Benchmade some credit for coming out with something new and different. If you don’t like the price then don’t buy it, there are plenty of other knives out there that may fit your needs and budget. I apologize for my rant, it’s not meant to offend anyone, it’s just my opinion.
No offense taken at all. I LOVE the discussion and you make some great points. You’re probably right I can’t pull out a knife that’s equal size, thinness, Ti, etc that’s cheaper. You’re right one doesn’t exist. BUT is there a need for something this thin and at this price? Maybe no one else is doing it because there’s not a need or real desire??? I’m not judging the ‘necessity’ of it per say but the price is HIGH for what you get plain and simple. But ABSOLUTELY if we don’t like the price don’t buy it and I stand by and agree with that. People think I’m nuts because I own a five figure knife (well I kind of am) but there is more justification for that knife than there is gif the price of the Narrows…. Mine was dull and had no detent, I could shake the blade out with little effort….sent it back. Cool knife despite the price and flaws. Crazy thin and light.
I agree, too much for a production folder. Production folders inevitablely have small defects, as this one does. The same care an attention that goes into a custom folder will not be found here.
Great convo Dirk. I love these topics. While I agree 100% and to your point, have recently bought lesser known customs for sub 1k, I’ll still probably cave and end up with one simply because it’s so different. Lol. Hopefully I won’t but who knows. Great discussion
It's interesting but at that price no thanks. The handlle seems so thin that extended cutting sessions might be uncomfortable, does the handle dig in to your palm?
So there is no “detent” in the traditional sense. It’s that small portion of the torsion spring that applies pressure to the lock bar (the curved portion). I just wish they had different spring tensions to offer customers. I assume someone will manufacture aftermarket ones. Just like I’m sure Skiff will offer other caged bearings. I personally love the feel in the pocket. I don’t plan to send mine back or sell it etc. I knew what I was wanting from it and maybe I’m one of the only people into it but. And they are Teflon or at least look/feel like Teflon cages.
I totally understand the ‘detent’ is not a traditional detent mechanically. But use it as a generic term. I’m glad you like it. Don’t get me wrong it’s not a bad knife at all.
As for Skiff bearings. That’s an interesting idea. I’m not sure how aftermarket parts will work out. I think we need a little more time to see what desires there are from owners and if there’s enough of a market.
I live 15 minutes from the benchmade factory and used to buy them pretty often. I like a lot of the models they make and enjoy carrying them.. but over the last few years their pricing is out of control. There is no way this knife should be 500 bucks. Crazy.
Inflation. I was hired at my current job at $10/hr 3 years ago. Now, I'm at $18.50 and hour, and the base pay for the job is $17/hr. I live in the Midwest too. Where you live might even be worse. Even ZT's went up by almost $50 each in my local Bass Pro in February.
the worst part is gonna be the dealers, if they buy some stock they wont be selling all of them and they are gonna take the biggest hit to get rid of them
Basically, Benchmade is charging CKF prices, Medford prices, or what have you for an upscale Bugout.... I just have a sneaking suspicion that they feel that we'll get accustomed to it and then they'll be able to vault all of their prices up into this territory. Great looking knife. Checked one out the other day and feels and looks great. But, you’re right, way too expensive. I’ve seen it come down to $430 so far and that is still too expensive. They could make more money by selling more of them at a lower price. They won’t sell very many above $430.
These are not in the same category, but as the customer I only have so much money: why would I not go with rmj tactical hawk, custom kitchen knife, any lt wright knife
I don’t think there are any American made titanium knives selling for 300.00. I believe American made titanium knives are at least 400.00$. I think you have to look to Chinese made knives to get titanium for 300.00$
@@ericmack001 that is NOT true. American Bladeworks Model 2 as I mentioned here and did a full video on is a custom USA maker. Full titanium liner lock with Magnacut and it’s $300.

Can I buy a $50 folder and it be uncomfortable, yes. Can I buy a $500 knife and it not do a lot and extremely well, no.
Besides the Narrows Benchmade introduced the Bugout in different colors. The new colored Bugout’s are 200.00$. The Bugout is a very basic knife made of plastic. How is it worth 200.00$ I want the cheapest knife I buy to be made of G 10. G 10 does not show wear. G 10 is an excellent handle material. I think Spyderco offers much better value for your money. I remembered when the benchmade anthem first came out, people lost there mind over the price ($525).... Benchmade discontinued it, now people are paying $700+ for a used one, I see the same thing happening with the Narrows. 🤔🤔🤔🤔
The Anthem being an integral makes it's price a bit more justifiable, like the Spyderco Paysan. The Narrow is a simple sandwich construction with barrel spacers, much cheaper to manufacture, only time will tell if it's a gem or junk.
There is an overall, joint effort, by all things for sale, attempting to destroy the economy (specifically the upper middle class). One of those tactics is charging more... for less.
With such a thin blade, why not a tougher steel like MagnaCut? The pricing on this is way out of line, especially for something that seems so niche. It's not like there aren't easily carried, light cutting platforms out there. Sure, it may be thinner and lighter than others in this niche with titanium but marginal differences for orders of magnitude of a higher price tag? Hard pass for me.
That knife should have been 400$ out of the gate and 375$ after it was easy to get. I'd buy one then, cool concept. We love American made, not American greed.
I’m not a huge fan of mine. Yea it’s thin and still very solid. But mine makes a grinding noise every time I open it and the action on it is very mediocre in my opinion. No titanium hardware and a stamped steel pocket clip is just sad at this price. 58-61hrc on m390 is underwhelming as well. 300$ knife tops in my opinion. The only reason I’m keeping mine is I’m expecting it to be discontinued fairly soon cause I wouldn’t recommend anyone actually spend 522$ on this knife no way no how
I think the 300 range has been the general consensus here. Mine is super smooth and if there was more detent it would be amazing action. But I agree I can’t really recommend the cost.
580 dollars...what the heck is going on with bm?! you are absolutely right with your rant, that's simply disgusting. the handle milling isn't even complex, i've seen more impressive stuff for 1/3 of the price. imagine what you can get for that money..chris reeve, spartan, demko, all better built than any benchmade ever.
ugh! its almost too thin for my taste. I thought the bug out was a little too thin, but this.....as if that wasn't enough, they've milled pockets into the ti. I don't know, I'm still on the fence. it's great looking, but for the price, i gotta watch more reviews. I don't really care how they justify the price, I don't know if I can.
Benchmade bumped their heads!!! Hell they should recall the narrows for weak spring..... They charging mid-tech price for production knives... no thanks... atleast the anthem was an integral!
lol, waiting for Rike to do something bigger, lighter, and thinner. Might happen, never know. Won't be $100 but I'd guess it would be significantly less than $580.
So, you know I’m a thinner knife guy, but this, why? This is breaking my excessive line when it comes to thinness. It’s going to be uncomfortable to use, and I understand that I’m mostly talk about extremer use cases, but I will sometimes have to cut heavier cardboard that requires a far more secure grip that would make this unusable, imho. The price, Benchmade can go away with that. This knife bugs me, so maybe I’m jaded
Price is far out of bounds for what it is. The scales would have been designed on a computer and it wouldn’t have taken much longer than any other scales.
$690 for a Herman custom knife, $580 for this… You make a good point, “we use American titanium!”… then why aren’t you using CPM-20CV which is practically identical to M390 but is American… Benchmade have lost it entirely
“Research and Development”?! Hahahaha… sorry BM, the drug company excuse doesn’t work in a field where we all know you just whip it up in CAD and slap out a few proto’s on the mill until you figure “good enuff”.
Love Benchmade. However, this knife is too expensive! It won’t be among my extensive high end Benchmade collection at that price! Very disappointing!!!
Hmm that’s a good point. I do think people would be more inclined to pay the $600 is it was a smaller company with hand work. But from a large production company just busting them out….

Two of my LCpls bought these at the PX when Benchmade came here. They got the "military discount" for the low price of $450ish.
Go to hell Benchmade.
At least The James Brand Barnes is an integral. No freakin’ way two slabs of mass-produced slab-on-standoffs construction is worth over $500.
💯
When you can get a Sebenza, Inkosi, or umnumzaan in magnacut for the same price or less this cost doesn’t make sense.
Exactly. Thanks.
Agreed I’m very unimpressed with the blade steel choice. YES it’s thin, but is that needed????
I played with one today at EKnives and I liked it! But not for $525!!!!! After tax you’re looking at what almost $600! NNNOOO
Exactly
This is where Benchmade jumps the shark. An overpriced answer to a question no one is asking.
Haha great way to put it. Thank you.
That knife should have been 400$ out of the gate and 375$ after it was easy to get. I'd buy one then, cool concept. We love American made, not American greed.
@@ct2368 EXACTLY
I just bought the clone of the Benchmade narrows $20 shipped it's fantastic at that price at $500 its trash
Regardless of my thoughts on the price of the Narrows I do not condone buying clones.
Looks cool but not for that price if two came together then all day
$580!!! Id rather buy an XM-18 and still have enough to take the wife to a nice dinner and a movie
@@MartinMartin-xm8xs 💯💯
Not half the knife the anthem was and it’s $150 more expensive…
Yep it’s got some explaining to do lolol
580 dollars...what the heck is going on with bm?! you are absolutely right with your rant, that's simply disgusting.
the handle milling isn't even complex, i've seen more impressive stuff for 1/3 of the price.
imagine what you can get for that money..chris reeve, spartan, demko, all better built than any benchmade ever.
Absolutely agree. Thanks.
Might as well buy a second hand benchmade anthem
Right
For that price, I’ll hunt down a Sebenza
Very true.
ugh! its almost too thin for my taste. I thought the bug out was a little too thin, but this.....as if that wasn't enough, they've milled pockets into the ti. I don't know, I'm still on the fence. it's great looking, but for the price, i gotta watch more reviews. I don't really care how they justify the price, I don't know if I can.
I’m right there with you. Even if I take the price away…do I want this knife? I’m not sure yet. It’s cool but is it something I would actually EDC??
$300 knife at most. There’s nothing unique about it other than being thin. Though that’s kind of cool.
@@vox707 riiiiight
Benchmade bumped their heads!!! Hell they should recall the narrows for weak spring..... They charging mid-tech price for production knives... no thanks... atleast the anthem was an integral!
Yep I feel ya there.
Be patient and there will be a quality Chinese version for less than $100 😊
😂😂
lol, waiting for Rike to do something bigger, lighter, and thinner.
I hear ya man. It’s certainly got EVERYONE thinking something. Lolol
Too many other GREAT options out there that are as good as this knife at a lower price point. Sorry BENCHMADE
Price is far out of bounds for what it is. The scales would have been designed on a computer and it wouldn’t have taken much longer than any other scales.
Agreed I think they are STRETCHING at the R&D factor.
I'll never own one....lot better value out there
Lots of options for SURE
Make it 9 inches and we‘re talking, maybe. For that price? omg wtf 🤣
Haha
I wouldn't piss on it to put out a fire.....

AFTER MARKET CAN'T BAIL'UM OUTTA THIS SCREW UP, ALONG WITH THE SISSY ALUMINIUM
Sissy aluminum ??
@@DirkWerning i was THINKING OF A GALS KEYCHAIN
$690 for a Herman custom knife, $580 for this…
You make a good point, “we use American titanium!”… then why aren’t you using CPM-20CV which is practically identical to M390 but is American… Benchmade have lost it entirely
Yep great analogy there!!!!
When their patent ran out.....they ran out.....too.
Hmm that might be the time things started to shift 🤔
Nope on that price. BM must have lost the plot
You could get a plane Jane sebenza for 450. Prolly get a Medford in that price range to. Spartan? Yeah. Who knows what else. I'll pass on this one.
Yessir
Nope. Too much for me... Like you said.. one can get a custom for that price
Okay good it’s not just me then.
“Research and Development”?! Hahahaha… sorry BM, the drug company excuse doesn’t work in a field where we all know you just whip it up in CAD and slap out a few proto’s on the mill until you figure “good enuff”.
😂😂
If that was a $250 I still wouldnt buy it.
Lol I hear ya.
Love Benchmade. However, this knife is too expensive! It won’t be among my extensive high end Benchmade collection at that price! Very disappointing!!!
Completely agree.
I think it's too thin to be comfortable in the hand I won't be buying one
It is thin and depending on what the intent is on use you are right it could be TOO THIN
if it was on sale for $200.00 I would PASS !! the Chinese are making better knives for $150.00........and that SUCKS BALLS ....OnWard
BOYCOTT BM....is what I say.
Underbuilt & overpriced 😂
Perfectly stated.
If it was being sold by a small business with a long waiting list and a frag pattern y’all would pay $750.
Hmm that’s a good point. I do think people would be more inclined to pay the $600 is it was a smaller company with hand work. But from a large production company just busting them out….
@@DirkWerning The problem is that half of the supposed small makers are actually just designers and are doing a Hoback on us.
@@4rmys4e48 that’s also often times true.
this knife is complete garbage
Haha okay care to share why?? Other than the price?
rediculous...
