    Sadness allows us to process grief, difficulty and is also where our empathy comes from. There was a lot of work put into this film. It's great. It tells us that it's okay to be sad at times. It's normal.

    • @nonconsensualopinion

      To add to this, as Joy realized in the movie, showing sadness is a signal to others that you need help. If you pretend everything is fine nobody will think to offer help. I remember seeing a quote online along the lines of "crying doesn't mean you're weak. Crying means that you have been too strong for too long". You have shouldered too much emotional burden without expressing that it was upsetting you along the way.

    Joy really didn’t understand the need for Sadness being a balance. That imbalance could lead to Riley not being able to understand her emotions at all. Sadness felt suppressed by Joy just like Riley. I think that's why Sadness started acting out by touching memories.

    • @suvijii841

      And those core memories were actually meant to turn sad, because of the longing and homesickness. All the memories from past life were originally happy, but now veiled with sadness, because they are forever gone. So, sadness actually had a job and she needed to do it.

    Emotions are afflicted with what's called "crippling overspecialization" : they are experts at the emotion they embody, but they suck at ANY other emotion. When joy and sadness were shut down, Disgust, Fear and Anger's attempts to make her sound happy had terrible results : Disgust only managed to trigger a sarcastic answer, Fear made her sound anxious and insecure, and Anger made her impatient and irritated.

    A very little animated movie, which I found out about by accident, but so glad I did. One of the finest animated movies ever and very emotional. A lot of memories do take on a sad quality in time, because they are memories and only memories, always reminding us of what was and can't be again. Doesn't mean we have to be sad for the rest of our lives though. It's okay to feel all of these things, only natural. Another thing is, people are more likely to listen to sadness than they are to anger. I have it on blu ray and have seen it many times. Really glad you girls saw this.

  • @darastarscream
    @darastarscream Год назад +26

    It's (partly) about how human experience is never fixed; things get recontextualized as we learn and grow. Riley's happy core memories turned sad because she didn't believe it was okay to grieve for the life she left behind-- Sadness needed to take the wheel and help Riley process the loss.
    I wish this movie had existed when I was a kid. It would've made certain conversations a *lot* easier.

    When I heard the soundtrack as Sadness unloaded the memories for Riley to see I cried. That music score made me relive my old childhood days at my favorite school. I wanted to visit it and talked to a buddy of mine who went to the same school. We took a trip to there and to our dismay we saw a huge vacant lot. Oh man how that tore my heart out. But a wise thought came over me. Even though it's gone I know I can always revisit it in my memories and that school will never be forgotten. That school was the only place to make me feel accepted back then before the other schools I went to.

      I think the scene with Bing Bong got a lot sadder for me when I became a parent and watched this again with my daughter. The scene where Joy reminisces over all of the memories of Riley when she was a baby, simple and happy, she sounds like a parent. It’s hard to watch your children deal with sadness, because it feels like your job as a parent is to keep your kids as happy as possible. But sadness is an important part of life and growing up, and it’s better to help them understand why it’s okay not to be happy all the time. The older my daughter gets, the more my memories of her as a baby turn a little blue.

    Everybody sees that Joy is the main character in Riley’s personality but miss that sadness is the main personality for the mother and anger is the main personality for the father. 😢

    Imo, I don't think cool kids at 3 o'clock judged Riley for being depressed about her memories, cause they looked at Riley with a kind of sad and sympathetic face. I think it's just what Disgust thought about them, cause everyone gets scared studying in new school the first day, and thinking new friends at school will judge them is usual.
    Even the other students in her new class, especially the girls have that face.
