Your moment to moment reaction throughout and after is all of us! I never try to give any pre-amble or context if I show a friend it, because it's a folly to think you can explain to someone with words lol
It speaks for itself and it speaks in some language that evolved from music and happens in the distant future haha
I get the laughing thing 100% - I am the same, usually mixed with expletives and exclamations of disbelief and admiration - it's just the sheer unbridled, runaway minecart of joy as you try to keep up - so effortlessly playful and light on it's feet, while being jaw-dropping. It gives you so many confusing enjoyable things to hear and follow in the arrangement too - making a game of it to see if you can guess where it's going to take you next.
Legitimately grateful most days to be born in the right part of time that has Collier in it, inspiring beyond words.

The stages of listening to Jacob Collier as a musician:
    1. Shock
    2. Amazement
    3. Denial
    3. Laughter in disbelief
    4: Mind enters new dimension
    5. Staring into space motionless while crying with joy
    6. Conceptual understanding of music is so shattered that u cease to believe in your own music talents.
    7. Cry in pain, what is the point of me ?
    8. Crisis finishes, your soul, mind and body reunite, and pure ecstasy of the sense washes over your body.
    9. This dude is … a genius.

When I first saw jacob's video's about 8 (9?) years ago, I was blown away - He was 18 or 19 years old at the time and I followed every video after that. The Flintstones video is 6 or 7 years ago and still an amazing accomplishment. I also love how he explains a lot of what he does in his Breakdown video's. His approach to music (especially Moon River) is extraordinary.

Hey Jeff! Jacob always makes me simultaneously beam with joy & sob at preposterous beauty & intricacy. It is jaw-dropping in the best sense of the word! Something about what he hears & exudes resonates with me, not because I know anything musically or out of familiarity, but the opposite. It's like he completes a chord or rhythmic pattern within me that I didn't even know I was missing, because I didn't know it existed.
Also: as far as your flashing art show experience, are you sure it was a big red dog & not Dino?! 😉😂

Seems like there's a book missing from your set.. The transcription book by Jacob and June Lee.
This particular track is just genius. Not only is it flawlessly executed, but you can really hear the incredible range in his composing. I mean, a twenty-something year old drawing on harmony from mid 20th century big band and a capella groups, while still maintaining his own identity? Let's just say I can hardly wait until Djesse vol. 4 comes out.
And I know what you mean, Jeff. Jacob Collier really understand how to convey emotion in his music, so you just can't help laughing or getting those goose bumps or crying. Just take the opening track of Djesse vol. 1. I mean, I get goose bumps just remembering the harmony.

Btw.: I loved your description of pictures popping up😄😃👍🏼🌈 (I see a lot of pictures and like a sped-up movie sometimes, too😄🌈), and your thought train re. how other outlets might have looked like - I can totally imagine that🤣😂🌈🤗.
In the beginning back then I was totally flabbergasted after listening to and watching these a capella videos from Jacob!!!🤯😍🤯🥰 (as my own active background was singing/a capella groups/rhythmic choirs/amazing workshops several years at Aarhus Vocal Festival (AAVF/DK) with amazing guests like eg. Bobby McFerrin an many more already “preparing” us outside the box musically so to speak etc.). WHAT an inspiration!!!!😃😃😍🤩🌈🎶
As if that wasn’t enough in itself, it all took off with all his other skills, instruments and what have you and …. phew🤣😂😂😅 ….. and yeah, I never left!🥰🥰 Really often listen to some of his music and at various levels depending ….. 🌈😂🤯🥳🥹💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚🙏🏼🤗.

I Love feeling the ongoing motion of life within his built-in rhythm (like the motion of an egg consistantly rolling♾️) in many of his songs ….. ahhhh🙏🏼💚🌱☺️🤗.

This is Gary Burton-level talent; as much as his physical abilities both vocally and instrumentally are pretty much off the charts, it seems to me that his REAL superpower is being able to conceive of this stuff. I've spent a long life being impressed by the progressive branches of rock and jazz, but NONE of it prepared me for Jacob Collier.

  • @thage7729

A couple of things I haven’t seen mentioned in my initial scan of comments.
    1. The Flintstones Theme is based on a time-honored structure of “Rhythm Changes” used by countless musicians throughout the bebop era.
    2. I would dispute the keyboard solo was sped up. it’s being played on a melodicon which JC has modified to have a hose attached to the normal mouthpiece so it can be played 2-handed (I’ve seen him play it live on another video). So imagine him flying across a ludicrously small keyboard and simultaneously blowing into a hose to power this melodicon to produce the wizardry that is heard on the recording.
    3. I still don’t know what happens on the final chord change, but it is incredible.
This is the first song I ever heard from JC and I instantly became obsessed and spent that evening (and many since) listening to everything he has posted on YT. Because of JC, I discovered Snarky Puppy when I stumbled upon the song he recorded with them. It was, indeed, a VERY good evening.

@@StrateleStudios I owned one at one point. It’s like a harmonica but it’s big enough to be a tiny keyboard. There’s a tube going in one end of the keyboard that he’s blowing air into to vibrate small metal bars just like an accordion or harmonica. The range of the notes coming from the Melodica is correct. Sped up, it would sound like a terrible soprano Melodica (which would be a HARMONICA) in a range MUCH higher than it’s built to be able to go. Google a melodica the size he’s playing

      @StrateleStudios  2 года назад +1

@@guyroseen7025 I’m familiar with the Melodica (Joe Jackson used to play one way back in the 80s when I first heard one). You can speed up any track without altering the pitch at all (believe me I’ve used it as a cheat many times hahaha). You have to be careful not to overuse it or you get nasty artifacts. What was the tip off for me was the speed that his had switched positions. It looked inhuman to me. He can probably play the riff in the location he’s at with that speed but it was the transitions that threw the flag for me. It didn’t look sped up by very much though just a little bit as far as I could tell. I’ll have to ask Jonah to ask Jacob for us. If you’re right I’ll buy you a beer 🍺 😉😊
